Experienced parent but… clipped newborns finger, feel awful!

We have a team of DC and nail clipping falls to me because DH is a coward but tonight whilst clipping the sleeping, newest (5 week old!) DC’s nails, the little one woke up, startled and I clipped the tip of their thumb!
Haven’t completely removed the tip but it bled a fair bit and for 10
minutes; they cried for a few minutes, I could cry for more… what’s worse is we have one of those tommee tippee spinning nail files but I couldn’t be bothered to find it!
DC is fine, I honestly feel absolutely awful!

Oh it’s worst thing isn’t it? I did the same with DS when he was tiny, had a full on panic attack afterwards. I only used the baby nail files on him after that until he was at least over 1. I think it’s worse for us than them though, it’ll heal really quickly I promise

Oh bless you - my daughter has a tiny scar on her face from falling off the coffee table because I wasn't watching her properly (was watching BGT!!) No harm done.xxx

I think it’s the fact they’re so young - 5 weeks and I can’t give Calpol if they show signs of being in pain!

I used to nibble my babies' nails, was less risky!

Don't worry, baby will be fine in no time.

Spareincoming · 29/11/2023 19:14

@Bleepbloopbluurp I’ve clipped all the DC’s nails and this is the first time I’ve ever managed to clip skin! And so young! Oh well!

Oh I did this to DD and felt awful, I still feel bad thinking about it and she’s almost 8!! She did survive. Don’t beat yourself up!

Surroundedbyfools · 29/11/2023 20:06

I did this when DS1 was a month old and I cried hysterically! I called my husband who was out and he thought something awful had happened ! Never used the stupid clippers Again now I always use baby nail scissors on both bath and toddler

Spareincoming · 29/11/2023 20:08

I’m fully accepting my own laziness is the cause of this one, if I’d have been bothered to find the electric file this wouldn’t have happened!
I should have guessed my persistent laziness would be my (minor today, thankfully!) downfall one day!

Mein gott. You have to clip them?

It’s a miracle you’ve got this far and this is the first time then. It’s virtually a right of passage.

I did this when mine was about 5 months. I can still picture his little face. I was so upset and then only used emery boards for next few years, which took bloody ages as I had to do it when he was asleep.

He is 9yo now and obvs can't remember it!

Sending hugs I know exactly how you feel xx

Cheepcheepcheep · 29/11/2023 20:17

Oh poor poppet. And poor you. I didn’t do this because I was lazy and just nibbled them 😂 but I remember the day I slipped going up the stairs and banged DD’s head on the stair - that was horrible. She was about 10 weeks. I took her to casualty and sobbed hysterically and DH couldn’t even come in because of covid….

As I’m sure you’re aware, she’s now a sassy preschooler with an insane vocabulary and doesn’t have a clue I once worried I’d brain damaged her…

LakeTiticaca · 29/11/2023 20:40

Guilty one here too 😢 did this with my first born age about 3 weeks. I was mortified. I popped a scratch mitt on his hand and by next morning it was fine.
It's 30 odd years ago now but I still cringe thinking about it 🥴

TicTacNicNak · 29/11/2023 20:51

Oh I did worse than that. Years ago I had my toddler sitting on the kitchen work top while I was baking. Turned to grab something and quick as a flash she grabbed the hand held blender which I'd stupidly left plugged in, and her thumb pressed the button. Her other hand was on the business end 🤦‍♀️ Took thin slices off the top of two fingers!! They bled quite a bit but she was ok once they'd been cleaned and bandaged. Not my finest moment 😢

Spareincoming · 29/11/2023 21:36

@RafaistheKingofClay My usual one seems to be letting them roll off the bed or sofa. All have done this in some way, despite me trying to prevent it with each DC.
And never on DH’s watch because he’s perfect.
Or the DC have been too young to report his failings!

I did this to my DD. I felt bloody awful, she was fine after a while.

Electric nail file found!
Glass of wine now being taken for medicinal purposes.
