Weirdly written posts in "relationships"

Has anyone else noticed these recently? Very long posts written in the style of a long "what I did today" story at school. Small clues such as non-idiomatic usage and minor errors suggest the writer is a non-native speaker of English. The tales usually seem to be lacking in context and are vague on the details of the people discussed. It almost feels as though something is being tested out in Mumsnet, perhaps an English course is using it for writing practice? 🤔

Chatbot?

madeinmanc · 29/11/2023 12:27

What would be the point of that, though?

Bots, they are everywhere

Crunchingleaf · 29/11/2023 12:30

Also increase in Reddit style posts too. If your writing a long post unless it’s well written I lose interest.

madeinmanc · 29/11/2023 12:30

Maybe you are both bots? 😮😁

Bots, they are everywhere

Sounds like something a bot might say!

Yes.

DinaofCloud9 · 29/11/2023 12:39

Yes I have noticed these posts and I agree that's its bots.

JustACountryMusicGirlInCowboyBoots · 29/11/2023 12:41

Yes about 3 so far this week.

MermaidEyes · 29/11/2023 12:44

Yes, loads of them. Tbh these days Relationships is as full of trolls as AIBU.

Necessitynamechange · 29/11/2023 12:45

I noticed this and they're always a bit weird.

Riapia · 29/11/2023 13:22

I wish people would indicate in the title if it’s going to be a long story.

BreakfastAtMilliways · 29/11/2023 15:39

Are They The Ones With Titles Always Written Like This?

BreakfastAtMilliways · 29/11/2023 15:43

Frankly, Relationships has always had its share of fiction writers. I’d be surprised if even a third of the situations described were real.

StarlightLady · 29/11/2023 15:51

They tend to lack paragraphs and punctuation.

MayThe4th · 29/11/2023 15:59

Relationships has always been full of trolls.

But the majority of posts there these days are bots IMO. To prove the point, I asked Chat GPT to write me a forum post about how I thought I was happily married but my husband is spending too much time with my best friend, and seriously, the result that came out would match the majority of posts on mn these days:

*Title: Need Advice: Husband’s Close Friendship with Best Friend

Hey everyone,

I’ve been married for five wonderful years, or at least I thought they were. Lately, I’ve noticed that my husband has been spending more and more time with my best friend. They seem to be getting closer, and it’s starting to make me feel uneasy.

I always believed in trusting my partner, but these recent developments are making me question things. Has anyone else experienced a similar situation? How did you handle it? I’m looking for advice on how to navigate this without causing unnecessary tension.

Thanks in advance for any insights you can share.*

Yes, I agree. There was one earlier today from a woman who was sat in a café as her husband left her with no keys after an argument, or whatever. The whole thing was...off

sixteenfurryfeet · 29/11/2023 16:15

You're right, there have been loads just lately. And I don't know about being written by non-native speakers of English - non-human more like.

ginasevern · 29/11/2023 16:20

I agree. They are almost certainly bots and I don't engage with them anymore. They are always long, written as though English is not the first language and somehow as if by a teenager. Basically alluding to a grown up issue but without any depth or real detail behind it - if that makes sense. I am not a bot!

yellowsmileyface · 29/11/2023 16:28

Can someone shed some light on how bots actually work? I see them a lot on instagram as well and I don't understand the logistics of how bots are posting.

I agree there seems to be an increase in bot activity, but I don't think it's helpful to assume it's a bot just because it's weirdly worded. It makes sense that someone who's distressed in their relationship might not be in the right frame of mind to compose a well written, well structured, coherent post. Abusive relationships leave you utterly confused and that sense of confusion is likely to come across in how a person describes the issues.

Yes, that was the one that made me wonder.

Ive noticed this too, so vague and AI like. The responses never answer the questions asked and are always weirdly worded in a bland neutral but non native way.

MermaidEyes · 29/11/2023 18:24

I saw the one about the woman in the cafe. The way her husband supposedly said "then I shall leave you in the cold" made me chuckle, so hopefully it's not true....
