Weirdly written posts in "relationships"

Has anyone else noticed these recently? Very long posts written in the style of a long "what I did today" story at school. Small clues such as non-idiomatic usage and minor errors suggest the writer is a non-native speaker of English. The tales usually seem to be lacking in context and are vague on the details of the people discussed. It almost feels as though something is being tested out in Mumsnet, perhaps an English course is using it for writing practice? 🤔

Relationships has always been full of trolls.

But the majority of posts there these days are bots IMO. To prove the point, I asked Chat GPT to write me a forum post about how I thought I was happily married but my husband is spending too much time with my best friend, and seriously, the result that came out would match the majority of posts on mn these days:

*Title: Need Advice: Husband’s Close Friendship with Best Friend

Hey everyone,

I’ve been married for five wonderful years, or at least I thought they were. Lately, I’ve noticed that my husband has been spending more and more time with my best friend. They seem to be getting closer, and it’s starting to make me feel uneasy.

I always believed in trusting my partner, but these recent developments are making me question things. Has anyone else experienced a similar situation? How did you handle it? I’m looking for advice on how to navigate this without causing unnecessary tension.

Thanks in advance for any insights you can share.*

Woah😳

That sounds like it was written by a human haha. Crazy stuff!

This is Chat GPT response to the OP. All I did was ask it to “write me a response to this” and then pasted in the OP’ text:

I’ve observed those too! It does strike me as a bit odd, the lengthy narratives with subtle language quirks. The lack of context and details makes it intriguing, and your theory about it being an English course experiment on Mumsnet is quite interesting. Wonder if others have similar suspicions or insights. 🤔*

That is what I would call studied blandness. It’s quite eerie to read because it feels like the equivalent of artificial sweetener in your drinks; it’s a response that has absolutely no depth or meaning.

Wonder how many celebs use it for their interviews and fan mail responses?
