In trouble, what do I do?

I, after my family member fell really ill sped to the hospital. I did 30 mph over the limit so 80 in a 50. I could’ve taken the points and called it or taken a ban. I’m asking for a reduced ban in court.
I now need to explain this to my employer and I work in education. I really really don’t want to have to explain this. I’m so embarrassed. What do I do? It’s actually very embarrassing to explain and I work with very intimidating management

What do you mean you could've taken the points?

Hammondhugh · 28/11/2023 22:11

As in I can accept 6 points. The solicitor I hired said I either request ban reduction or points.

Surely it is an automatic ban. Would points have taken you over too? Just tell the head, t is likely you are not first to have to face up to such.

Why didn't you take the points?

declutteringmymind · 28/11/2023 22:15

You have to explain it. I'm sure if it's genuine you will get sympathy but they will have to follow whatever their policy is. If you are in a union, seek advice.

Personally I'd take the 6 points if it's on offer.

ChatterMonkey · 28/11/2023 22:17

80 in a 50 zone is pretty bad and pretty dangerous... what makes you think you are entitled to a reduced ban?

Regardless of the circumstance, you made a dangerous decision and need to deal with that. Of course you are embarrassed to tell your boss, you should be.

Why didnt you take the points?

RunningFromInsanity · 28/11/2023 22:18

Why do you need to tell your employer?

Work in education.

Yes, but why do you need to tell them?

FrancisSeaton · 28/11/2023 22:26

What on Earth is a reduced ban?

Babybearissleeping · 28/11/2023 22:27

Why didn't you take the points?

Hammondhugh · 28/11/2023 22:27

It ranges from 7-56 days. So seeking a lower end of it in order to be able to go to work.

Circumferences · 28/11/2023 22:29

Are you saying you can't take 6 points because that'll be over your maximum points? That's why you're going to court?
Nothing makes sense otherwise.

ThornInMySide84 · 28/11/2023 22:29

Surely you can just get to work via taxi or public transport. Why would you need a lesser ban? I imagine everyone getting banned uses their car for something, hence the point of the ban being to inconvenience you…

GiveOverRover · 28/11/2023 22:31

It's embarrassing and inconvenient yes, that is the deterrent. I'm not sure what the question is?

Babybearissleeping · 28/11/2023 22:32

Ah ok so you already have points?

Maybe think about the fact you could have killed someone??

Taxi/bus/walk to work. It's supposed to inconvenience you so that you change how you drive which if you've already got points and were going 80 in a 50 sounds very needed!

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 28/11/2023 22:33

But won’t you get a ban AND points?

GiveOverRover · 28/11/2023 22:35

You can sometimes apply for a reduced term after the minimum term of the ban has been served, not in advance, on longer bans, and with exceptional circumstances. Get further info from your solicitor so you understand your situation.

Basically, I’m saying. I don’t feel comfortable telling my employer. I just don’t want to explain it. So im wondering if I should be honest or just give another reason.

It sounds you have an excuse that may elicit some sympathy. It's not like you were drunk driving. What else could say?

Anyonecanquit · 28/11/2023 22:42

'I could’ve taken the points and called it or taken a ban. I’m asking for a reduced ban in court.'
I don't really understand this, as I thought speeding got you three points, and a total of 12 points in 3 years gets you a ban.
But if you were given a choice between points and a ban, why didn't you just take the points and not be banned?

GiveOverRover · 28/11/2023 22:48

Is it in your contract that you need to inform your employer? If so then I'd tell the truth rather than come up with a less embarrassing lie that you could potentially be caught out with.

You did some really excessive speeding and you got caught, and here you are. At some point it will probably be easier to take it on the chin rather than try to wiggle out of it and potentially cause yourself further issue by lying.

growgrowinggrown · 28/11/2023 22:48

Tell your employer, let them judge you.

Being judged as a dickhead is the least you deserve, could have ended very differently and maybe seeing people in real life react to your stupidity will drum it home properly.

dmqlqlsk · 28/11/2023 22:48

You're not answering people's questions, sounds like you're not giving the full story.

LIZS · 28/11/2023 22:49

Can you write it down if you don't feel able to explain it. So you need time off to attend court?
