Has anyone (non-coeliac) tried going gluten/wheat free and seen a positive change in health issues?

In particular gut issues but also skin problems and sinus/nasal/phlegm issues too?

Didn't want to read and run, but I am currently gluten-free to help control acid issues. So far, it's going well.

Flowersinthewateringcan · 28/11/2023 22:08

That’s good to know midnightglow29 digestive issues are my main issues and I have tried literally everything. I’ve attempted GF a few times (think a few months is the longest I’ve managed) before I fall
off the wagon but I really need to try it for much longer.

I did and it didn’t make a difference in fact made things marginally worse (poss cause gluten alternatives I ate were more refined carbs and I generally eat wholemeal type things)

You might benefit more from being dairy free than GF.

Flowersinthewateringcan · 28/11/2023 22:11

Jeffjefftyjeff this has been my issue in the past. I follow the low fodmap diet and so many gf breads etc have high fodmap ingredients and I’ve never felt good on them. I think I need to eat naturally gluten free foods.

Flowersinthewateringcan · 28/11/2023 22:11

RetinolStings I’ve been diary free for 20 years but still have issues.

Yes, due to endo. It helped more than any medication. It took a good 6 weeks to notice the difference though.

CuriousGeorge80 · 28/11/2023 22:33

I reduced my gluten intake massively as my DP is gluten free. Helped my digestion and bloating etc a lot!

Flowersinthewateringcan · 28/11/2023 22:36

KenAdams I had no idea it could help
endo. My sister has it and has been in a lot of pain recently and I’m awaiting tests for it.
CuriousGeorge80 that’s good to know, my IBS has been so bad this year, I really need to get it settled.

Yeah I went gluten free during COVID, not intentionally just all we had in. When I tried gluten again my ibs flared up hugely.

Low fodmap neve worked for me, I've got a limited list of what I can eat (no nightshades, grains, gluten or dairy (I have a milk protein allegy too)). I probably slip up on nightshades/grains once a week or so.

The biggest thing that helper my overall health was quitting caffiene and pepsi. I've not had a fibro flare in years since quitting pepsi.

Flowersinthewateringcan · 28/11/2023 22:54

GingerLiberalFeminist it’s hard work being your own food detective, isn’t it? It’s taken me years and many food diaries to find out which foods cause me issues and even then it’s quite hit and miss for me.
I can only drink water or mint tea, not been able to tolerate caffeine for years. I’ve had such a flare up this year I can only think gluten/wheat may play a part as I’ve eaten that all year so far.

I'm not coeliac but many digestive issues so went gluten free. Far better although as pp have said, gluten free breads etc aren't great, so I stick to rice, maize, oats, potatoes rather than processed gluten free products.

Appalonia · 28/11/2023 23:03

Only when I've done low carb. Absolutely no wheat. I felt great tbh, no bloating or flatulence, increased energy. And lost weight, especially on my tummy v quickly.

cheapskatemum · 28/11/2023 23:04

Yes me. I avoid wheat, rather than gluten, so I eat sourdough rye bread (when I can find it). I don't miss pasta, so don't have to worry about finding alternatives for that.

I have also realised I'm also lactose intolerant. Fortunately lactose free products taste really similar, so I just use those.

Skin, digestion and mood are all better. No snotty nose or chesty cough.

Flowersinthewateringcan · 28/11/2023 23:10

newnamethanks I’ve not yet found a gf bread the I’ve either enjoyed or which hasn’t upset my IBS so I think I’d go ‘naturally’ gf like you.
Appalonia I have considered trying low carb, my friends has been on it for years and hasn’t had any gut issues since.
cheapskatemum that’s another issues I’m wondering would clear up. I have constant issues with phlegm, runny nose and tickle cough (which I’m sure is a post nasal drip thing).

PickAChew · 28/11/2023 23:11

Did it this year and no longer have constant heartburn and I have no idea how I managed to produce such a small amount of shit before the change.

Also had to take in a lot of waists despite not losing weight.

I wasn't in the habit of eating bread every day, as it made me so uncomfortable so I just keep a loaf of GF stuff in the freezer for whenever I fancy it.

PurpleBugz · 28/11/2023 23:21

I would have said dairy free but see you have tried this. My little one is dairy free gp told me to cut soya too as something like 70% of those who can't process milk protein can't process soya either.

newnamethanks · 28/11/2023 23:21

Forgot to say I don't use milk at all but I do eat milk products like cheese or Greek yogurt. Found the liquid stuff made me feel quite nauseous as I aged. My snuffly nose has stopped since I did that.

TheSandgroper · 28/11/2023 23:53

I didn’t know my chronic sinus problems were a gluten sensitivity until I gave it up. All of a sudden, I wasn’t using my sick leave.

I had unexplained rash things on my upper arm I had to get frozen off. They stopped.

Oh, my Lord, the fluid I got rid of. The first two weeks were horrendous for needing the toilet then it was more manageable for a another six months before I reached an equilibrium.

If I eat too much gluten now (I now only have the host at random strange Masses as my own church has v v low gluten ones for me), I get insatiable, unquenchable thirst for a few hours and my mouth seems to numb so I don’t feel the water I’m drinking. I could drink litres in a very short period of time. Then after a couple of hours of feeling like a squelchy sponge in every cell of my body, the switch resets and all that water has to be removed just as fast as it went in! And that’s not fun, either.

But I gave up the gluten 30 years ago and I will never, ever go back. And now I am cows milk free also, and low salicylate into the mix. Fun. But I feel so much better for it.

Ladyof2022 · 29/11/2023 00:18

I gave up eating all grains five years ago. This means not just no wheat but no rice. corn, oats, barley, etc. In practice this means no bread, pasta, fruit yoghurts, take aways, any kind of Fast Food, Factory produced food, microwave meals, tin soup, Oxo cubes comma crackers, crisp braids, biscuits, etc.

The benefits that I have felt, and which keep me on this restriction, are that I no longer have asthma, hay fever, or sleep apnoea.

I have been looking into this recently and wonder if it’s something I should try.
Do you still eat potatoes/sweet potatoes?
It will be foods such as bread and crackers that I will really struggle to replace though as I love sandwiches and toast.

I have been wheat free for 16 years. Totally fine with gluten but another protein in wheat absolutely destroys me. (I can't eat wheat where the gluten has been removed but can eat barley). Changed my life.
As an side I work as a HCP and often see a link between dairy intolerance and sinus problems.

EducatingArti · 29/11/2023 08:29

Yes. I went gluten free some years ago and was able to come off all my IBS medication and asthma medication.
I occasionally still get an IBS flare up but very infrequently. I take inhalers and montelukast if I get a cold as things tend to go to my chest more but other than that, no meds!

MoonRiverBlue · 29/11/2023 08:35

Not gluten or wheat free but yeast free, i still eat dried pasta, weetabix and sourdough no bloating issues. My best skin was eating paleo, no dairy, followed by keto with dairy.

MoonRiverBlue · 29/11/2023 08:36

I did fodmap and it was a revelation tgibgs like fennel, onions, lettuce and apples bloat me. Hard cheese fine, cottage cheese terrible.
