Has anyone (non-coeliac) tried going gluten/wheat free and seen a positive change in health issues?

In particular gut issues but also skin problems and sinus/nasal/phlegm issues too?

Sorry me again, almond flour makes excellent bread sub.

DumboHimalayan · 29/11/2023 08:40

I'm gluten free and haven't noticed any difference at all. And I'm coeliac. FML.

🤣

OceanicBoundlessness · 29/11/2023 10:02

Gluten free for 8 weeks. I've not had random acute gluten reactions such as brain fog and sudden all encompassing tiredness, like my brain switches off...

What I haven't had though is improvement of the more chronic stuff.

I do much better being low carb altogether but I'm finding that hard at the moment.

I went gluten free, dairy free and refined sugar free completely for 4 months.

Didn’t feel any different at all. I was eating clean homemade meals lots of fruit, veg, pulses and organic meat.

🤷🏽‍♀️

I will definitely give this a go. Nothing to lose and it may just help 🤞

I have been looking into this recently and wonder if it’s something I should try.
Do you still eat potatoes/sweet potatoes?
It will be foods such as bread and crackers that I will really struggle to replace though as I love sandwiches and toast.

Yes, potatoes, hash browns, crisps...

Iateallllllthepies · 30/11/2023 07:40

Yes, my husband.

I was diagnosed with celiac disease a couple of years ago and since cutting out gluten, if I even injest the tiniest crumb, all hell breaks loose. So we don’t have any gluten containing foods in our home to make it easier.

He suffered with bouts of bad skin. Totally cleared up. So has the acid reflex he suffered with. We can afford to eat out so his diet is all GF. We always cooked from scratch anyway, but now obviously use GF stock cubes and other ingredients. Only processed GF food in house is bread, cereal and pasta for the children.

I don’t eat any processed food now - the GF stuff doesn’t make me feel good so I don’t eat the breads/cakes etc.

My 9 year old used to get bouts of skin irritation - never since we got rid of gluten at home.

I recommend Schar brand crispbread for the missing crunch. They taste of nothing but are very crunchy. A staple in my cupboard.

My sons gf is gf and my son has recently gone gf as it's easier if both eating same foods. He's lost 8 lbs and told me his stomach feels better, flatter and less bloated. Now he's wondering if he needs to be gf forever.

Flowersinthewateringcan · 02/12/2023 11:49

Thank you all.
I have been gf now for several days.
Feel worse rather than better tbh and really struggling to know what to eat as I’m trying to eat ‘naturally’ gf products and as I am also dairy free and low fodmap I’m finding it a bit difficult. Hopefully, it’ll get easier.

It’s time to see a good dietitian, then. Don’t go further without it as you need to ensure proper nutrition.

In Australia, you don’t need a referral.

Flowersinthewateringcan · 02/12/2023 13:23

TheSandgroper I’ve seen 3 NHS dieticians over the last 10 years and currently under another, they’ve all been next to useless tbh and sadly I can’t afford to see anyone privately.

@Flowersinthewateringcan

With those issues, I'd recommend you urgently go dairy free and eliminate sugar as much as possible from your diet.

In answer to your question, I kept having flare ups of IBS and autoimmune symptoms, also I was unable to absorb certain nutrients. Even though I was not found to be celiac via blood testing, I have subsequently cut all forms of gluten out of my diet and all of it has stopped, I can now take iron supplements and my body absorbs them.

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 02/12/2023 13:29

I've had 4 regular non medicated periods. Before going gluten free the only way I'd have a regular cycle was by taking 1500mg of metformin each day. I also don't suffer from heartburn no where near as much as I used to do and now if I get it it's usually gone within a few hours rather than days and days on end. Oh and tons more energy to what I used to have. I'd often need to have a nap mid afternoon. I just need to put that new found energy into exercising more

RosesAndHellebores · 02/12/2023 13:30

In August due to some alarming blood tests and feeling something had to be done about my weight I cut out:

Refined sugar
Alcohol
Sat and trans fats
Wheat (except for one slice of bread a week and a small helping of wholewheat pasta every two weeks)
Red meat reduced to once a week

Within days my bowels improved, as did wind Blush, my ankles stopped getting puffy on hot days. Every bit of eczema cleared up within a few weeks, as did my dandruff.

I am convinced it's the wheat.

Also, I have lost 24lb and my cholesterol has reduced from 7.8 to 5.4.

Nopenopenopenopenopenope · 02/12/2023 13:32

I did but I couldn't keep it up. Unexpectedly, it made my periods lighter and less painful. Wasn't what I was trying to help but it was interesting it had that effect.

I haven’t touched dairy for 20 years and eat very little sugar. I have had lots of issues with iron over the years due to heavy periods and have ended up with iron infusions so do keep up with my iron levels.
I will persevere with the gf and see if it’s helps with all these issues, thanks.

IBegYourBiggestPardon that’s good to know as I am constantly knackered and would literally sleep throughout the day if I could.
RosesAndHellebores I definitely think there is something unhealthy in modern wheat. There is a book called Wheat Belly which I keep meaning to get.
Nopenopenopenopenopenope I do remember that was an unexpected side effect’ when I did last try wheat/gf. I thought it was a coincidence at the time but maybe it wasn’t?

Ah apologies I see you said you don't take dairy or sugar.

Good luck - for iron I take 'mega food blood builder' supplements, they're the absolute best as well as Floradex liquid and SpaTone sachets. My body wasn't absorbing iron from the GP or OTC as I wasn't taking it correctly and also the long term effect of being gluten free seems to have worked. But I have to stay 100% GF and never have any at all or I get problems - even so, I'm not diagnosed celiac.
