Illness from school is relentless

Anyone else finding the continual illness from school and nursery taking its toll on their family? It feels relentless.

Honestly exact same in my house. I swear we haven't gone a week since September without one of them being ill. First it was chicken pox with DS3, then a vomiting bug with the both of them and since then both seem to permanently have a snotty nose. New baby is due to arrive any day now and I really hope they don't pass anything on to her. It's just that time of year!

fairywhishes · 28/11/2023 20:08

My partner and I are both teachers and we've been ill, snotty and coughy since Sept.

TeaWithASplashOfMilk · 28/11/2023 20:45

Hope the birth goes smoothly. Congratulations!

@fairywhishes - what are your headteachers like? Would they mind you putting a HEPA filter in your classroom?

Yes it's an occupational hazard. I spent nearly every school holiday recovering from something having dragged myself through the term. I have hardly been ill at all (Covid once) since I retired 9 years ago.

TeaWithASplashOfMilk · 29/11/2023 12:25

Son had viral induced wheeze when v little. Seemed to grow out of it. Got covid and is now on steroid inhaler daily. Seems every time exposed to something viral since, it sets off a relentless cough.

I put my DD into nursery 8 months ago. I have just taken her out, she was only in two mornings a week but none of us can cope with the sickness, she has had two awful chest infections and gives everything to us which plays havoc with a busy calendar and having to constantly cancel appointments. She never really settled there anyway. I am keeping her off until school and then just get ready for another bout of it but for now the relief for us all to be healthy and just normal and be able to look forward to Christmas. I know some people put them with a child minder instead as apparently its a lot less sickness. I personally think a lot of nurseries could do with much better cleaning and infection control procedures.

Shinyandnew1 · 29/11/2023 12:35

Completely agree. We do not have a member of staff at the moment who hasn’t been off ill/is still off ill or is struggling into work but still ill!

Its tough. I wish there was more of a push to stay off when sick, have some ventilation and put HEPA filters in. A recent study of HEPAs in nurseries showed a 30% decrease in absence. Meanwhile our nursery was opening door a crack to let kids in in the morning to keep heat (and viruses) in.

I know a couple of people that took kids out of nursery and put them with childminders instead. Hope you find the solution that works for you.

People say that kids don't get as sick in reception if been in nursery, but I've not seen that (anecdotally) in our school, except for chickenpox which there's a vaccine for anyway. I've never understood that anyway as viruses hurt the immune system and are generally more dangerous for much younger kids.

We are on Dd's (age 5) 4th lot of antibiotics in six months. Once for tonsillitis and the rest for recurring ear infections. I've only been at my job a year and have been having to beg childcare from family else I'd probably be sacked by now.

TeaWithASplashOfMilk · 29/11/2023 20:00

Poor little mite. DD is off with an ear infection now.

I think this is a valid point. I watched my daughter struggling with breath a couple of times and discussed with Dh that i was worried about lung damage to her from recurring chest infections that seemed to go on for weeks. She so little. If she was 5 or 6 then she is a bit bigger and stronger to cope with bugs from school.

Yesaswell · 30/11/2023 12:40

Yes - my dc are all on about 70% attendance

stayathomer · 30/11/2023 12:41

Covid in September (5 out of 6 of us), then two with chest infections, one with ear infections, then bug. I was on the phone to the school every day for nearly two months! Hope you all get out of it soon (and that it stays away from us now!!)

TeaWithASplashOfMilk · 30/11/2023 12:41

Son is off non-stop coughing now.

Do you have a link to the study I’m very interested due to the issues we are having

bakewellbride · 30/11/2023 13:34

My son is hardly ever ill, currently in year one and has been to nursery.

Yesaswell · 30/11/2023 13:51

Mine all went to nursery and we kept being told ‘it’ll improve when they are older’.

It’s worse if anything !

We spend a fortune on vitamins , probiotics, organic foods, supplements etc. clean house , plenty of fresh air , enough sleep etc and they are ill all the time and don’t even recover between Illnesses the last few months

Same here. My dc is in Year 1 and has taken 1 day off school for illness since Reception (another child vomited next to her in school the day before). Had about 4 days off in 2 years of nursery before starting school. She just seems to be particularly robust. We don't catch colds from her either.

GrammarTeacher · 30/11/2023 15:46

People sending children in ill really doesn't help. Lots off at the moment with us but then also lots coming in and coughing all through lessons and now I've been off for days with respiratory issues. I have asthma and these things hit me hard. Sat in the doctors now hoping for some steroids to help me kick this.

TeaWithASplashOfMilk · 12/12/2023 14:13

...and back to vomiting today...

No prob. There are lots of studies, but this was a recent one I heard of, specific to nursery.
