Urgh. Give me a virtual arse kicking. I've got to do the morally right thing and it's pissing me off.

I ordered some ceiling lampshades from Amazon and they arrived at the weekend. I've just had a second set delivered this morning. I checked and I hadn't accidentally ordered two lots. It's clearly their stuff up.

On the one hand, keeping them is stealing. I would be a thief. Bad 'karma' (I know that's not what karma actually is, but it's the common use of it)

On the other hand - it's Amazon. Who steal millions quite legally by avoiding paying their taxes. And they treat their workforce like shit.

Plus - the lampshades are so damned pretty and I could have all my rooms looking the same.

Sigh. I'm going to contact Amazon and tell them to collect but I don't want to, damnit. 😭

Also I'm on here when I should be working so if you insult me enough I'll log off in a tantrum and actually get some work done.

It’ll be a hassle for them to collect them so they’ll probably just tell you to keep them anyway

Blurrymornings · 27/11/2023 11:20

They’ll probably let you keep them as it’s less hassle for them. Then you get to have all the lovely lampshades and a feeling of smugness!

Girlboysgirl · 27/11/2023 11:20

Meh, I’ve had this happen before with a large company and just kept the item - think it was duvet covers or something…I didn’t even feel like I’d done anything wrong. Maybe my moral compass is well off!

ohyesohyesoh · 27/11/2023 11:21

I'd let let them know. We had this through work before, it was an order that totalled around £100. They said to keep the item as it wasn't worth them picking up and as it was their error
So, you then get to feel virtuous and quids in

tpa · 27/11/2023 11:21

They business plan doesn’t include customer service.

keep them and forget it

EileenBilton · 27/11/2023 11:23

I've been in this situation previously, but not with Amazon. I told the seller about the error and told them which days of the week I was available for them to collect. They couldn't commit to collect on any particular day and so that was the end of that. I ended up with two sheepskins instead of one, nice.

tpa · 27/11/2023 11:23

I made an order, total £17 last month (not Amazon)

got the wrong item delivered. Item worth £35. I phoned them and said can you send my item as I got the wrong one.

they told me to keep the £35 item and sent me my £17 item anyway for no further charge.

TadpolesInPool · 27/11/2023 11:23

Agree with PP. Ring them and they'll tell you to keep them probably

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 27/11/2023 11:23

We had this with some pans from Ninja, told them and they said to keep them, too much hassle to get them collected!

MrsGalloway · 27/11/2023 11:24

They’ll probably tell you to keep them. I don’t know enough about Amazons tax situation but, based on anecdotal evidence from friends who have worked for them, they treat their workers pretty well. You can go and do a tour of the warehouse near us, apparently it’s very interesting.

Beginningless · 27/11/2023 11:25

It is what karma is actually, you steal, someone steals from you at some stage in the future. But anyway I agree that they probably won’t bother for you to send it back, ring them and then you can enjoy your freebie with a clear conscience!

OhComeOnFFS · 27/11/2023 11:27

But was it an Amazon product or someone selling their products on Amazon?

Ducksinthebath · 27/11/2023 11:27

If they do arrange collection then double check it’s a large item collection. Got caught out with that recently and ended up with large piece of exercise equipment living in my hallway for a week while useless Amazon get their heads round the fact it hadn’t been collected then organised a second collection.

PainPeas · 27/11/2023 11:45

Remember that sellers on amazon send out fake AND real parcels so they can skew the reviews. I wouldn't put it past them to send out two so they (the seller) can also review the item and review boost (they do this no matter the item quality).

Just to cast another light on this it's well known that Amazon treat workers like absolute crap. It's all over the media in fact.

If you check the news there were worldwide strikes held by amazon workers on Black Friday, in fact.

SiobhanSharpe · 27/11/2023 11:50

I had something similar to this with John Lewis when I ordered a linen basket from them, two arrived but I was only charged for one.
They told me to keep the second one but I didn't want it, so they told me to pack it up and take it to the post office which i refused to do, it was bulky and difficult to carry. And it was their mistake in the first place. Then they tried to refund me (even though I had only paid for one, which I was keeping).
Finally they agreed to collect it, but didn't turn up. By this time I was getting very frustrated and sending them increasingly irate emails. A few weeks later they managed to get someone to collect. It was a relief to get it out of the hallway. I think JL gave me a tenner for the hassle.
And they do indeed have a 'customer services' department...

Summerhillsquare · 27/11/2023 11:51

YABU for shopping on Amazon in the first place!

The sustainable thing to do is to keep them.

most returns are not resold and end up in landfill.

its why online shopping is so unsustainable on the whole.

so keep them @IncompleteSenten and feel good about it.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 27/11/2023 11:54

If you want to clear your conscience then ring but I guarantee they'll tell you to keep them
If it was a pS5 then obviously not!

Aquamarine1029 · 27/11/2023 11:55

This happened to me. I contacted Amazon right away and they told me to keep the extra items.

Echobelly · 27/11/2023 11:57

Agree with posters above.

I once had a friend send me a present but the company sent me something much bigger and more valuable and even then they said I could just keep it; I sold it on for a decent amount in the end. I doubt Amazon will miss a few lampshades.

To add to the complexity of your moral conundrum, I think the action of not returning is dependent on the motivation.

‘I can steal because they do steal’ is a two wrongs don’t make a right argument and is a fallacy.

‘This is their fuck up and it is a pain for me to have to return and requires effort. The onus is on them to spot and rectify the error’ is fair, IMO.

MaliciaKeys · 27/11/2023 12:03

Offer to buy the second set of lampshades and enjoy them. I'd feel guilty keeping something I hadn't paid for but that goes back to to my strict Catholic childhood.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 27/11/2023 12:03

They often tell you to keep it, I would always let them know though. When DD was little I had the same Mini Micro scooter delivered twice for her. I phoned them and they said to donate it somewhere, so I gave it to a local toy library.

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 27/11/2023 12:16

Lots of companies sell through Amazon so YABU.
