Yorkshire Puddings

Help us settle this discussion!

Are Yorkshire Puddings an accompaniment for all types of roast dinners, or should they only be for certain meats?

<<I’m going to attempt a poll to gauge the wisdom of the MN collective 😁>>

PS. I ran out of poll options to add in roast lamb, but feel free to add in the comments if you feel that way inclined.

As a veggie, I’d never have one if I stuck to the rules. Husband is from Yorkshire and on the rare occasion that we do some sort of roast (or even sausages) there are Yorkshire puddings.

FionnulaTheCooler · 25/11/2023 11:16

There's never a wrong time for Yorkshire pudding.

WellHereIAmAgain · 25/11/2023 11:16

My mum serves them with fish fingers. 😂

SinnerBoy · 25/11/2023 11:17

I think that they can accompany any roast meal, as well as other kinds of food.

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 25/11/2023 11:18

Have them with custard if you want to, there are no actual yorkshire pudding police. You won't get sent to Batter Prison.

meatbaseddessert · 25/11/2023 11:19

Balls to the people who say Yorkies are only for beef. Bullshit. They are served with every roast in this house.

As is mustard and mint sauce.

DramaAlpaca · 25/11/2023 11:20

Yorkshire puddings with custard, you say? Now that's an idea!

NigelHarmansNewWife · 25/11/2023 11:20

Some people don't think they've had a "proper roast dinner" unless they've got Yorkshire puddings, pigs in blankets, three types of potato, etc, etc and are so stuffed afterwards they can't move.

winniethepooped · 25/11/2023 11:21

Interesting....I made a chicken roast dinner on Thursday and had yorkshires with it...asked DH if he thought acceptable? He agreed they're yum who cares.

They were always reserved for a roast beef dinner growing up.

I could literally eat about 6 in one go

NorthernLiner · 25/11/2023 11:21

To add, is there anyone on earth who does not love a YP?!
To be honest with you though, I don’t know anyone in real life, and I’m not sure I’d trust them if I came across anyone who doesn’t 😌

Please also feel free to add your fool proof sky high YP recipes, especially if you’re from God’s own county itself, and you’re in possession of a secret family recipe that’s been passed down through the generations - TIA!

They're gorgeous with jam and Nigella serves them with golden syrup. There's nothing they cannot accompany, IMO.

Wolvesart · 25/11/2023 11:22

I must admit that, although we only have them with beef, they do go with all roasts so that’s what I voted. There’s also the debate as to whether it’s one big pud or little individual ones. The DH is from Lancashire where it’s one big one. Quite difficult to get right imho. Amusingly, all his siblings do Auntie Bessie’s and don’t even try to make one large pud from scratch

FrostyFlo · 25/11/2023 11:22

I voted all , but if being traditional it would be beef only.

@PelvicFloorClenchReminder your user name is most useful.

SecondUsername4me · 25/11/2023 11:24

I make Yorkshire Puddings to go with any roast plus any sausage dish and sometimes stews.

I save 2 when they come out of the oven and dc add ice cream and chocolate sauce to them for dessert too.

mondaytosunday · 25/11/2023 11:43

All, but we don't have them at Christmas.

ChickenBhunaandChips · 25/11/2023 13:05

I use the bbc good food recipe.

Whisk it really well then leave it to stand for an hour or so then give it a good whisk again before using. Make sure the oven is hot at least 220 and the oil has been pre heated for about 15 minutes. Then don’t open the door once they’re in!

And yes they go with everything!

HarrietStyles · 25/11/2023 13:19

I grew up in a family (southerners) where you only had Yorkshire pudding with roast beef. When I met my husband and went to his family (northerners) for Christmas, my mind was blown when we had Yorkshire puddings with our roast turkey dinner. And they said they have yorkshires with every roast dinner. Now I always do yorkshires with every roast as they are blooming delicious!

MRSMTO · 25/11/2023 14:01

We have Yorkshires with every roast dinner. We also have yorkshires with stew, or sausage and mash. We have even had Yorkshire puddings with shepherds pie. Writing this from my home in South Yorkshire I feel I am an expert in the matter 🤣

maisiedaisy64 · 25/11/2023 14:08

Generally only have them with beef but am a big fan. I’m always disgusted when I get a dinner at a restaurant with no Yorkshire. Feel cheated.

I do 4eggs, 200g flour, 140ml milk, pinch salt. 180/200 oven, heat the tin, then heat oil in tin, once they’re in the oven don’t open it for 20 mins.

DrCoconut · 25/11/2023 14:09

@DramaAlpaca they are good with jam

DrCoconut · 25/11/2023 14:10

I make them with cornflour so they are gluten free

Lonecatwithkitten · 25/11/2023 14:13

This is a big source of angst in our household:
My husband from East End of London originally believed every roast should have stuffing and yorkshires. In fact he sometimes makes so midweek Paxo!
Me - from East Anglia, but Scottish mother Yorkshires are for Beef, stuffing is for chicken and Turkey.
I cook so mostly we go my way, but at Christmas I make him everything and my lovely DSis is cooking this year and is going to indulge his needs.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 25/11/2023 14:13

I cook them with any meal that has gravy. But i am that person that cant get excited by them. I don't dislike them as such. If i was served them as a guest Id happily eat them but just don't tend to chose them if plating my own. That doesn't mean i don't cook them, beca
