Are Yorkshire Puddings an accompaniment for all types of roast dinners, or should they only be for certain meats?

Because I live in a house of Yorkshire lovers!

Mirrormeback · 25/11/2023 14:14

With any roast if I can be bothered

Klingfilm · 25/11/2023 14:15

I am also in the 'every roast but not Christmas' camp.

Bathingbirds · 25/11/2023 14:17

I live in God's own, I am not native but Dh's family is, Yorkshires with every roast dinner. Why would you not? They are delicious little gravy holders. Dh's are superb but I am unsure if I am meant to share the secret family recipe Grin I think it is a standard one 100g flour, 4 eggs one and chill the batter in the fridge. They are massive explosive things and are a delight.

All types. But as a first course, alone with gravy.
Then with the main.
Later, with a cup of tea, spread with jam

userxx · 25/11/2023 14:24

My gran used to serve me Yorkshire's and gravy. Who needs anything else 🤷

mydogisthebest · 25/11/2023 14:26

Me and DH are vegetarian but always have them with a roast and think they should be on every roast dinner and definitely Christmas dinner.

I use the Jamie Oliver recipe and they always turn out well and rise a lot (often getting stuck on the oven roof!)

ElaineMBenes · 25/11/2023 14:32

There's never a wrong time for Yorkshire pudding.

This. And they definitely belong on a Christmas dinner.

BeeDavis · 25/11/2023 14:36

All dinners!! I’m even partial to a Yorkshire pudding when I go to Toby carvery for breakfast!!!

notthesamename · 25/11/2023 14:37

I can make a case for them being in all meals - breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks!

WhatFlavourIsIt · 25/11/2023 14:38

Yep, they go with any roast or anything that has a gravy like sauce ( that includes casseroles or stews). Mint sauce & red current jelly should also be served with all roasts.

SpottyElephant · 25/11/2023 14:39

We have them with anything that comes with gravy. Roast, casserole, shepherds pie…

I try and mix up the dishes we have with a roast because I get bored, but there’s uproar if I try to leave anything out 🙄

BeansOnToast32 · 25/11/2023 14:42

If the meal contains meat and gravy then I'll always have a Yorkshire Pudding.

Yorkshire puddings with custard, you say? Now that's an idea!

You may laugh, but in my South German family we've only ever made the local sweet version of them which gets served with vanilla sugar and apple puree. My mum even had the old forms for it going back to my great-gran!

2jacqi · 25/11/2023 15:57

@NorthernLiner I feel that yorkshire pudding should only be served with roast beef but I am in a group on facebook called rate my roast! on there you will see yorkshires served with all the meats on one plate and I mean all! a bit of chicken, a bit of pork, a bit of beef, a bit of lamb and a bit of ham all on the one plate!!!! you will also see around 10 different vegetable on the same plate and that is not including the roast potatoes! they also serve mashed potatoes on the same plate as roast potatoes!!! cauli and cheese sauce??? yip it is there too! and everything is swimming in 2 pints of gravy!!!

Have them with custard if you want to, there are no actual yorkshire pudding police. You won't get sent to Batter Prison.

😂😂😂

avemariiiiiaaaa · 25/11/2023 16:54

Every type of roast dinner

And anything with gravy really

Sausage and mash
Pie and mash
Pie and chips

And sometimes as a snack Blush

TheDogsMother · 25/11/2023 17:01

Roast Beef only. It's the law. <gavel>

itsallabitofamystery · 25/11/2023 17:02

We have them with every roast, although we never had them on Christmas Day until my youngest was old enough to talk and was absolutely gutted that they weren't on her plate come Xmas day. I batch-cooked six for the next Xmas day, but not enough for everyone given we had never had them before. We ran out. Now I have to cook 28 in the days leading up to Christmas!

This!

Lifeinlists · 25/11/2023 17:08

You don't have Yorkshire Pudding with * anything. You should eat them before* the main course, with gravy I'll grant you. That's the proper Yorkshire way, though that may have now died out.

There was a saying "Them as ates the most pud gets the most meat" - a cunning way to fill people up and spare the expensive meat.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/11/2023 17:11

Anything with gravy.

And if it's something without gravy like a gammon joint, you make a bit of veggie bisto and have them with that too.

DM (lancashire married to a Yorkshireman) was not a generally good cook but made superb Yorkshires - the best ones were in a big tin , so nice and puddingy in the middle, light and crisp round the edges. Occasionally served with syrup for pud, though we mostly preferred them with gravy.

BeyondMyWits · 25/11/2023 17:20

Mmmmm Yorkshire pud....

Aunt Bessie's with anything.
Homemade with roast beef. ( using beef fat to make them)

jellytots18 · 25/11/2023 17:31

Every roast dinner in this house, they're delicious.

Also have them with other things, sausage and mash etc x

NorthernLiner · 25/11/2023 17:33

Oh thanks for all the input!
Laughing at Batter Prison 😂

It seems that I made one the Lancastrian way today then 😳
(The reason being we were at my mother’s, and she didn’t have any muffin tins!)
It was an absolute beaut though, super light and crispy in all the right places…

We had it with roast beef 👌🏻
