How much do you spend on your children at Christmas?

Just wondering what is normal these days. I would say we spend about £60 per child. We have 3 children.

I would say about £300 (he is 6) that doesn't include his Christmas outfit (new white trainers, jeans, shirt - smart outfit basically)

Slitheringheights · 23/11/2023 21:33

This year prob about 400 each. Which is ridiculous I know. But we have had a shit year. I had a cancer diagnosis, major operation and we had no holidays this year. My two are 13 and 11. So I think it’s deserved xx

Multipleexclamationmarks · 23/11/2023 21:34

No specific budget but around £500 each (2×teenagers)
But literally no one else buys for them, we have no family at all.

We don't have a set budget, last year he got a little big bike with the pedal kit etc, plus other presents so probably around £300 including stocking. This year there isn't a big item he wants or needs so probably around £200. I'm aware as he gets older and wants consoles etc it's likely to be a lot more. I'd never get into debt for Christmas, we are fortunate to earn reasonably well and we only have one child

It's not ridiculous at all. I hope your health is on the up and your new year is more positive.

Thank you so much. Definitely on the mend and hopefully back to work after Christmas xx

Inheritanceconundrum · 23/11/2023 21:45

It varies, but around £100-200ish depending. The small extra bits and pieces soon add up. Often it will include some clothing too.

Hocuspocusnonsense · 23/11/2023 21:45

OP my children are 4,6 and 8.

I will be aiming for a max of around £120-£140 each. Everything seems to have gone up in cost!

I had a 3 month old at Christmas and spent about £30 on her that year, she was my second child and I realised a 3 month old only needs a couple of presents.

anon2134 · 23/11/2023 21:46

I buy throughout the year and don't keep track. I buy them things that they'll like and that I can afford.

SuperDuperCabriolet · 23/11/2023 21:47

About 300 each. 4 kids.

TBH you’re better off asking ‘what’s your monthly take-home pay and, after all essential bills, how much are you able to put towards Christmas presents’ if you want to know what ‘normal’ is.

Some will have to save all year for the bare minimum in presents and some can spaff away a months pay check merrily.

You need to compare yourself to people in similar financial situations to you if you want ‘normal.’

I disagree. What I spend for Christmas Day doesn’t reflect our disposable income. We were determined to never make a rod for our backs when they’re older and ask for the Earth. And we really don’t want them to be spoilt. We do loads of nice experiences though.

Emi199 · 23/11/2023 21:48

And I’m sure there are people who don’t have much disposable income who really splurge.

Gillypie23 · 23/11/2023 21:48

Depends on what you can afford.

XiCi · 23/11/2023 21:48

Around £500-600 but I only have 1 dc, and she's a teen.

It's really easy to spend small amounts when they're little, I don't think you can really compare that to what you spend on them as teens

mamaduckbone · 23/11/2023 21:49

About £100 on a main present (which they usually ask for now - trainers / clothes) then at least another £100 on surprise bits and stockings. When they were little it was much less, but even bits and bobs for stockings mount up for older teens.

When I read threads like this, I always think some posters must feel really awful.

catherinewales · 23/11/2023 21:53

A lot. We was so poor when I was young but we always got decent Christmas and birthday presents. I always just buy what they want. Weather that's they get 20 presents or 3 it's what they asked for they'll get. I don't spend the same amount or get the same amount of presents. They've always just known that some things are cheaper then others so accept that one year they may have less presents then the other.

MentalLoadOverload · 23/11/2023 21:57

Most years around £100, some years less. But we also tend to save any big items for Christmas and birthdays so some years it’s more (and sometimes considerably more) as there may be a phone, a tablet, a bike, new bedroom furniture etc.

Joppi · 23/11/2023 21:58

£50 for my 4m old on stuff that would be needed anyway in the future

DaizenShine · 23/11/2023 22:04

About £150 on my (will be) 6 month old.

Blueshinemoon · 23/11/2023 22:06

This year I’ve spent so far around £150 each, but still need to get stockings which will be around £50 each and maybe couple of other bits. 3dc. Normally I spend much less but we’ve actually got some money this year and I’ve also got some bits of vinted, so I’m really excited to be able to get them lots of things!! I thought I was spoiling them but this thread is making me feel better (and normally these threads make me feel like shit when we’ve only had £20 to spend on them!).

SofiYol · 23/11/2023 22:07

Previous years, I’d have spent well over a grand on my two.

I never felt like I had done enough, or they had enough but it was ridiculous. My youngest would still be opening gifts well into the afternoon, it was overwhelming and a lot of the stuff never even got used. They don’t even remember what they got except for one or two things.

This year, I’ll be cutting right back. I’m really thinking hard about what they would love, and use. Better, not more.

We have an immediate family member with Glioblastoma. All any of us want is for her to still be with us at Christmas time.

Buy what you can afford, I don’t care how trite it sounds but it really isn’t the gifts that make Christmas.

lifeisbollux · 23/11/2023 22:11

We spend about 150 each on 4 of them.

We keep it fair as one isn’t biologically ours, we have custody of a nephew who is very close in age to one of our biological children and we never want him to feel like she has any less than the others.

Just what I was thinking. We don't spend as much as most people on this thread I can assure you.

IDontHateRainbows · 23/11/2023 22:15

About £100 each, not including stocking fillers.
