Extra strong foot file/sander needed!

I'm considering buying a DIY sander for DH's heels. He uses heel cream, but they are still like leather. Does anyone know of an electric file type thing that works?

I agree with the soaking, I never realised what a difference it made. A nice long bath then soak in a washing up bowl with some vinegar, a standard pumice stone. It wipes off.

Cressaid · 24/11/2023 11:21

I've tried so many including creams and the electric foot file thing, those rotating files last no time at all. Crap. Bought this off Ebay less than a fiver and it's bloody brilliant, tough and way more manly and a damn site better than some of the stuff 😅

Do any of these take the hard skin off heels so that you actually get sensation back? I've found files and sanders will make them smooth but there's still no feeling there.

A dremel with sanding band

Sand paper wrapped around a block of wood. Definitely works and then cream.

@SurprisedWithAHorse I could barely walk for about a year before I worked out soaking, long hot bath, white cider vinegar in a footbath, scrubbing and then heel cream. Leave the cream to soak in for 30mins then thin cotton socks overnight. my feet are like they should be and I'm not in pain anymore.

Thank you, I'll try it. I'm not in any pain but I can't feel a thing on my heels with all the thick dry skin. I've sanded it with pretty much everything, it gets smoother but there's still just no sensation!

Teatrayderby · 24/11/2023 18:50

It's often fungal. Get a good set of files that you can clean or dispose of once they're used and some good anti fungal cream

a relative requested this as an Xmas gift, heard from someone that it was good

Seriously you all need to try soaking your feet before buying gadgets and lotions that promise the world!

Roussette · 24/11/2023 20:47

I did my feet with the microplane I linked earlier, it took minutes, then I used the udder cream to massage in... soft as a baby's bottom!

headcheffer · 24/11/2023 20:53

Microplane foot file and a high percentage urea cream. Go carefully with the file.

Supersimkin2 · 24/11/2023 20:54

Soak feet
Rough sandpaper from B&Q to get the grey porridge off - 30p a sheet
vegetable paring knife for big bits
flexitol
sandpaper next day as finishing touch

SurprisedWithAHorse · 24/11/2023 22:14

Is it even possible to get down to soft skin that has sensation? Does there come a point where the whole epidermis is just all completely hard until you get to the live skin?

Dixiechickonhols · 24/11/2023 22:42

Best thing I’ve used is a callus remover gel from Amazon. Follow directions carefully and follow up with a cheese grater style file.

I think some of it is just how your feet are. My friend never has hard skin on hers and doesn't do anything to them
My dads are awful - when the podiatrist said how good my feet were she said "and can you tell your dad what you do please" Grin

SurvivorsInc · 24/11/2023 00:52

Another one saying podiatrist here. I'm diabetic and struggle with hard cracked skin on heels and podiatrist is brilliant! I'm supposed to used a cream but I'm bad at self care (and trying not to be)

Coming up to winter you really really need to be stepping up with your cream, it;s too easy for the skin on the heels to split and you risk infection, bleeding , catching your socks and pain (depending on how much sensation you have . You might get loads of issues but no pain if you have neuropathy )

Prevention is so much better .
Keep your cream by your bed so if you go to sleep and CBA going to the bathroom , it is there . I keep cream in the drawer and old cotton socks .

You know if you don;t do it your Podiatrist will nag you Wink

Problems reaching the feet
The heels take your bodyweight each step
The heels are the toughest skin on the body
Some medical conditions or medications can make the skin dry
One foot will always take more pressure
There will always be some biomechanical anomoly in the feet . Most cause no problems . Others do
Feet are complex structures , much maligned and sadly ignored and shoved into unsuitable shoes until they scream "Help"

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/11/2023 03:24

@SM4713

I haven't used one but the Margaret Dabbs files have a good reviews
Soap&Glory one too .

Long handled abrasive footfile
Little and often, don't try and remove it all too quick.

Use it dry , then a soak , then slather a Urea cream on the damp skin and put some old cotton socks on.
If you do too much the heels will be sore
An adult is not meant to have baby soft skin, your feet take your weight every step . It;s a hard work load they have

Maybe some gel/silicone heel cups
