7 days …which European city

LunaTheCat · 22/11/2023 08:24

I have 7 days to visit any city in Europe ? Where would you choose and why. I will be alone so will probably choose a hotel as I want people around me.
Have been to Paris and would love to spend longer but is such an “obvious” choice.
PS know I am very lucky!

Echoing some posts above, I did two 7 day trips this year (don't like beach hols!). Have to say they were very enjoyable and interesting. Getting around was so easy on the trains and the cost of living was far less than here.

It may or may not appeal, but it's just a suggestion.

  1. Fly into Seville, two full days there - fabulous but I'd been before so maybe 3 days? Then train to Cordoba, which I absolutely loved, the Moorish influence is amazing and it is a charming city. Two days, Then onto Granada by train, two nights. Alhambra is amazing and the city is buzzing, heaving and FREE tapas all over the place. Then train to Malaga for a bit of shopping in Calle Larios and fly home from there.
  2. Venice, Padua, Bologna, Ravenna. Sounds exhausting but just did one day in Venice (had been before). Based in Padua so took train from there to Venice it's just 30 minutes and Padua is a charming city all on its own. The Scrovegni chapel with the Giotto frescoes is not to be missed, amongst other things. Then train to Bologna for the day, a mad place and fabulous foodie scene together with a great atmosphere and very historical. Then to Ravenna and the famous mosaics, again amongst other things.

Next trip is to Maastricht, Aachen, and Cologne where I'll do a DIY (not a tourist cruise) on the Rhine. Hope that works out for me!

I'd probably do 2 cities - maybe Rome and Flroence or Bologna or Venice. Depends how you feel about travel. We wnt interrailing this summer, asnd it's quick (and V easy) to get around Germanic countries - we did Munich - Salzburg - Vienna - Bratislava, all trips were less than 2 hrs I think, v reliable, and you get to see more.

How about Salzburg and Vienna?

Whataretheodds · 22/11/2023 12:52

id also consider Seville and Granada or Granada and Cordoba as 7 days would be enough to do a twin centre, and you can easily get the train between them.

I'd do this. Or Rome, and add Ostia Antica and some time at the beach.

In 9 days last winter we trained all round Europe:
London-Paris-Zurich ( Eurostar and then TGV)
Zurich-Vienna (Railjet)
Vienna-Venice (Railjet)
Venice-Rome (Frecciarossa)

We spent 3 days in Vienna and Rome, 2 in Venice. The train trips were incredible and I can't recommend them enough!

Seat61.com is the absolute best to plan, and then buy tickets on raileurope.com.

Paris, even if you have been before. But then I like museums and art galleries.

Versailles - one day (at least). The Palace itself and then walking around the grounds (a long way) to visit the Trianon and Petit Trianon, and Marie-Antoinette's hamlet (which I absolutely love). If you plan ahead you can book an English-speaking tour of the smaller rooms of the Palace which aren't accessible for general access.

Daytrip by train to Giverny to visit Monet's house and gardens.

Then loads of galleries and museums in Paris, and leisurely exploration of the surrounding areas.

Pere Lachaise cemetery.

Shops! If you have hobbies/interests, find relevant shops and, again, you can explore the surrounding areas too.

Feria abril Seville

katscamel · 22/11/2023 14:25

Ljubljana is lovely and you can easily head to Lake Bled or Zagreb for a day.
Istanbul (Geographically Europe) is my favourite city and can happily spend a week there. So much to see and do....hamams, shopping, great food, museums, boat trips...
Valencia is lovely and lots to do.

Damnloginpopup · 22/11/2023 14:44

Istanbul. No question.

LunaTheCat · 22/11/2023 21:48

Thank you lovely people!
I have already been Florence, Seville and Berlin. I am in excellent company 🤣
Will be travelling in May/June
I love the idea Istanbul but a bit wary as solo female traveller- any insights appreciated!

Rome without a shadow of a doubt. I’d maybe do 5 days there and two by the coast actually as the trains are fantastic and it’s so easy to get about.

Do some walking tours and a food tour, they’re brilliant.

Sitting in the sunshine in a Piazza watching the world go by with nibbles and wine is my idea of heaven.

I’d def go Budapest at that time of year.

guinnesschocolatecake · 23/11/2023 09:14

Vienna if trip is just before Christmas, or Germany. You could do a side trip to Salzburg, Bratislava or Budapest.

Alternatively, visit Trieste and Ljubljana. Or Innsbruck and Bolzano, if you feel Alpine. Or Brussels or Antwerp, combined with Leuven or Ghent in Belgium. Go to Colmar and Nancy in northern France. Leiden, Haarlem (with day trip to Ansterdam) in the Netherlands.

I'd go to Dinan in Brittany because I'm interested in medieval social history. It's a lovely medieval town full of original buildings and has a wonderful feel to it. The surrounding countryside is also beautiful.

Agree. Combine with a trip to St Malo & Mont st Michel. Very close to each other.

AdoringDavidAttenborough · 23/11/2023 09:18

Lisbon, fabulous place.

Prettypaisleyslippers · 23/11/2023 09:19

Rome

Prague for me, if you stay away from the Wenceslas Square area it is a fantastic historic city and the architecture is wonderful.

Same! Gorgeous city! The old town is beautiful

Paintmybathroom · 23/11/2023 09:22

Lisbon. Or I've also heard good things about Porto.

Agree about Mont St Michel, as long as it's on an icy day in January which will put off other visitors. It's very quiet then and you get the atmosphere of the place really well.

BearSoFair · 23/11/2023 10:41

Copenhagen (and surrounding areas - Helsingor, Roskilde etc). I did 4 days solo in spring then back for another 4 in autumn because there was so much I still wanted to see!

Maddy70 · 23/11/2023 10:50

Seville , madrid, barcelona ,, Prague, krakow are all favourites of mine

Caledoniadreaming · 23/11/2023 11:06

@lesdeluges those options are both my absolute dream holidays.

I'd also throw in Madrid. Still some of my favourite food memories.

ManAboutTown · 23/11/2023 12:37

Rome - there is enough to do for 7 days easily there.

After that Vienna and Berlin (I should be able to say Paris here but it's a grubby dump full of lowlifes these days).

For somewhere with a lot to see and a nice vibe - Madrid, Barcelona, Prague, Munich, Lisbon and Copenhagen

Hbh17 · 23/11/2023 12:42

Rome is the obvious one.
Or consider a twin centre trip, with rail travel between, eg Amsterdam/Brussels, Venice/Verona, Vienna /Munich.

Bearpawk · 23/11/2023 12:42

Barcelona and Rome. Did both recently for 5 days and could have stayed for 7!

Bearpawk · 23/11/2023 12:43

Rome and Barca depending on the time of year though. I'd avoid July - Sept because of the intense heat and crowds!
