Aside from moving it / moving to a new one. Stuff that improves what you have.

Id:-
Knock through the lounge to a small room off it to make a lounge/diner.
Add a small shower room in the attic
Snazzy up the utility room
New kitchen (with wine fridge)

It's all generally in our plan (we can't decide if we would rather move instead) but it's all such a faff and an expense and it's really boring planning it all - so if I could just click my fingers and it be done, I'm in!

I would board the loft so I could actually walk across it without fear of death and insulate it to the hilt while doing so.

Replace all the windows as it needs doing desperately.

Repaint and recarpet.

Possibly knock down half of it and build a larger wrap around extension instead of the small lean to we have.

Clicheinaqashqai · 21/11/2023 15:45

Loft conversion to create master with ensuite, so we have 2 bathrooms, and a utility.

New kitchen and flooring throughout downstairs. Already open plan and the floor and kitchen were here when we moved but seen better days.

Strip the textured wallpaper off the ceiling upstairs and replaster.

Clicheinaqashqai · 21/11/2023 15:45

Oh and also new windows and the driveway has seen better days...

Ground floor single story extension with walk out roof terrace for existing bedroom above. Full bifold windows across ground floor bar one side where I'd put a pantry with the washing machine etc.

Convert the loft - would require full support installed at the eaves due to type of roof trusses I have as they'd have to be removed /cut away. It's doable but pricy - looked at it a few years ago. Insert those amazing Velux windows that open out to a balcony. En suite bathroom.

Rebuild front living room window with a large bay.

Knock down existing front door & lean to hallway and rebuild out to edge of path. Add toilet to this space.

All windows replaced. All ceilings redone and walls replastered. Obv full decoration.

I'd prefer to move house 😂

Eaumyword · 21/11/2023 16:02

Love where we live but:
Have it permanently warm in winter and cool in summer!
Redecorate and general freshen up everywhere.
New bathroom.

Mountainhowl · 21/11/2023 16:05

We are rented but if it was our own:

  • New floor in kitchen (expect we will have to do this anyway as 6 years of dogs has ruined the laminate finish, more than normal wear and tear I reckon)
  • plaster the walls, at least in the living room but possibly throughout
  • new windows at least in the front (they are blown so have watermarks we can't get rid of)
  • decorate hallway/stairs/landings and replace carpet
  • decorate the bedrooms and bathroom

It doesn't really need any major work bar the windows (and the plastering I guess), and we are allowed to decorate, just can't afford to!

Our house is finally at the stage we imagined it would be when we moved in 15 years ago today!
I love it, it’s unrecognisable to the house we got the keys to. All i’d really like to do is make the bedrooms bigger but that’s impossible 😂
I think we’ll move in another 5 years or so.

LimeCheesecake · 21/11/2023 16:10

Summer 2022 we had spoken to a couple of builders and started lining up an architect to do an extension to take our kitchen across the back of our house and bring down the wall with the dining room, making a big open plan kitchen diner. Then you know, gas & electric prices, interest rates, cost of living crisis, suddenly adding £500 a month onto our mortgage was going to be more like £800 a month to borrow the same amount, oh and our bills had just gone up about £300 a month… anyway we parked that idea, so id get those rough sketches out and we’d call the architect and builders back and get that done.

(I blame Sunak personally for my lack of pretty kitchen and will be thinking about “kitchen stealing bastards” when I vote next)

Deargodletitgo · 21/11/2023 16:10

Decorate stairs and landing, its double height and can't be arsed. Redo utility so it's lighter, new bathroom, reoil the floors.

LimeCheesecake · 21/11/2023 16:11

(I am aware it’s not just Sunak who ruined my kitchen.)

GrouchyKiwi · 21/11/2023 16:16

Redo all three shower rooms/bathrooms so they're designed better.

Replace tile floors in kitchen and hallway with something less cold and smashy. Probably vinyl in the kitchen and cork in the hallway. Maybe. Undecided.

Completely redo the kitchen.

Replace lounge carpet with cork flooring.

Demolish and rebuild the garage.

Find some better system for heating water as it takes forever for the boiler to get hot water through the house.

Put a light tunnel in kitchen ceiling to make it less dark, and redo lighting in there too.

Remove garden wall and rebuild.

Redo external render.

Add those panel thingies that make electricity from the sun (I can't believe I have just forgotten the word for those) Blush

Frostine · 21/11/2023 16:20

I'd like to nip out for a coffee & lunch and come back to it all renovated as we've been doing it up for 10 years and still lots need doing.
Where's your fairy godmother or Christmas miracle when you need one !
at a push diy sos

Shodan · 21/11/2023 16:21

I'd pay someone to lay the patio and landscape the garden. And renovate the upstairs bathroom/loo.

As it is, I shall be doing those things next spring. More DIY (sigh)

SqueakyDinosaur · 21/11/2023 16:21

OMG SO MUCH!

New kitchen and bathroom
Booster pump for water pressure
New wooden double-glazed sash windows
New radiators
Sitting room and kitchen floors, both wood, resanded and resealed
Carpet cleaned
Whole place redecorated
New front door (it's a flat) and much more solid partition wall.

Aparecium · 21/11/2023 16:26

Kitchen-diner.
Utility room with laundry chute and raised ceiling for indoor line-drying.
Permanent gazebo across patio, with retracting sun-blinds.

Re-configure roof of living room extension so that it makes a smooth run with the permanent gazebo.

Ohhhh dreams....

Comedycook · 21/11/2023 16:29

Built in wardrobes in every bedroom.

Both bathrooms done.

Maybe a hot tub in the garden and a patio heater

mrsm43s · 21/11/2023 16:31

We've actually done most of what we wanted to do to the house, including a couple of big extensions. We've basically doubled the size of our original house.

What's still left on our list:
Removing a flower bed to create an extra driveway parking space
Replacing windows in the original part of the house
Reskimming a couple of rooms
New flooring, possibly some built in shelving and redecoration in living room.

TBH, it's not money stopping us getting these jobs done, it's fatigue from having lived through two extensions and just wanting a year or two where our house isn't being worked on, tradesmen in and out etc. We'll get round to it though...

BlueGrey1 · 21/11/2023 16:32

External insulation
look into improving the heating system
new flooring throughout
new kitchen
do something with the garden
new front and back door

these are not in any particular order

TotalOverhaul · 21/11/2023 16:33

I'd love to remodel the bathrooms, utility and kitchen. All in really shabby gloomy states. Also would love a better bedframe and new sofas for the living room.

TotalOverhaul · 21/11/2023 16:34

And get the front drive repaved. it is really uneven and keeping control of the weeds is a full time job, even at this time of year.

WeeSleekitCowrinTimrousBeastie · 21/11/2023 16:34

New kitchen

Concert the double garage to a gym / den.

Syndulla · 21/11/2023 16:36

Knock down the garage and add a two storey extension. Downstairs the tiny kitchen would be extended, along with the addition of a study, toilet, and large utility / storage area.

Upstairs I'd add a new master bedroom with ensuite, leaving our old bedroom for DD7 who is currently in the third box bedroom, whilst DS would remain in his.

TheLurpackYears · 21/11/2023 16:40

Tell the exh to get the fuck out and change the locks behind him.

SpaceRaiders · 21/11/2023 16:42

Ours is 16th century and the walls are made out of cardboard in places. It’s strip it back to beams and insulate it from floor to ceiling. I’ve got a few windows that need restoring too and I’d add conservation type secondary glazing. Then I’d pull up the floor boards throughout the downstairs and reinstate the cellar and insulate from beneath.

Spendysis · 21/11/2023 16:45

Kitchen extension and downstairs shower room. We are considering it but means adding it on to the mortgage and probably extending the term but I like the idea of the mortgage being paid off in 5 years so keep putting it off
