Two Questions please:
My favourite film is with George C Scott as Scrooge and a multi star cast.
What is your favourite?
In the film Scrooge buys the big turkey as a present to the Cratchit family. Did Dickens write that or was it a goose. I am surprised that in 1843 turkeys were widely available. Anyone with the book to put me right?

Albert finny version and the black and white ones

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/11/2023 22:26

I’m pretty sure it was a turkey. IIRC Jane Austen writes in at least one novel (Emma) of someone’s turkeys being stolen, and she was writing well before Dickens, so I dare say they were reasonably available, but probably way too expensive for most people.

Chocoswirl · 19/11/2023 22:26

I like the musical version with Albert Finney as Scrooge.

I am not sure, but I believe it is a turkey in the original.

DarkRainyNovember · 19/11/2023 22:26

Goose

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 19/11/2023 22:27

It's a turkey, the prize turkey. I always think it's a weird gift as the Cratchits won't be able to cook it in time and also they have to cook their goose at the bakers as it's too expensive for the fuel so how are they going to be able to afford to cook a massive turkey?!

I think it's Mrs Cratchit dream of one feeding turkey to the children one Christmas.

My favourite version is the Jim Carey Disney animated version.

Chocoswirl · 19/11/2023 22:29

Have checked and can confirm it’s a turkey!

AugustRose · 19/11/2023 23:05

The 1951, black and white version with Alastair Sim is our favourite. We watch it every Christmas Eve.

Pthalo · 19/11/2023 23:41

I love the Ryan Reynolds version called Spirited, it is SO good.

Copperoliverbear · 19/11/2023 23:56

Alastair Sim.
It's a prized Turkey.

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/11/2023 23:57

Muppets obviously. Why would anyone watch anything else ever?

MeinKraft · 20/11/2023 00:02

Muppets is my favourite but I have nice memories of watching the quite scary old black and while one with my great grandmother as a child.

AcrossthePond55 · 20/11/2023 00:06

Another vote for Alastair Sim

Although as a child I loved 'Mr Magoo's Christmas Carol'.

oooh thanks will look this up!

I LOVE A Christmas Carol.

I think Bill Murray’s ‘Scrooged’ is my fave but I do like an authentic version - BBC or the one at the RSC was good.

I absolutely love A Christmas Carol and love most adaptations of it. I'm sure there was a good BBC one a few years ago.

That is the musical adaptation of Oliver Twist, called simply Oliver, same author, different book. It also had the glorious Oliver Reed playing Bill Sikes and wonderful music, a truly fabulous film.

ImDuranDuran · 20/11/2023 03:00

Albert Finney version, unbelievable acting. He manages to make Scrooge both callous and funny.

Alighttouchonthetiller · 20/11/2023 06:37

Scrooged and The Muppets for me.
