I'm having trouble believing the travel websites. If you've been, pls spill!

Considering a last minute break as we may between houses this Xmas.

We went to Tenerife for Christmas 2 years ago and it was lovely & warm, around 23° every day. We did stay in the North of the island which gets more rain so we did see the odd shower (generally not a problem down South). I did need a cardigan when we were sat outside in the evenings but then i'm a freezer!

Offleyhoo · 19/11/2023 19:30

If they keep their coats on.

Crikeyisthatthetime · 19/11/2023 19:32

Also thought you were talking about the ones with beaks and feathers. They'll need their big coats 😉

Torganer · 19/11/2023 19:33

You can look at previous weather data. On average it is 21 degrees in December.

Namechangedforspooky · 19/11/2023 19:33

Depends. We’ve had snow in lanzarote in early feb before!

NannyGythaOgg · 19/11/2023 19:36

I was there for Christmas a few years ago. Was definitely warmer than the UK, but not enough. It never got above 20 degrees during the day, with a cool wind. I've never wanted to go again

NearlyMonday · 19/11/2023 19:37

Obviously it would be warmer than the UK, but not hot enough for us

CormorantStrikesBack · 19/11/2023 19:37

I went in Oct years ago and it was quite cool. Cloudy most days, needed to wear a fleece on the beach. Too cold to swim. I think you’d need Dubai at Xmas to be sure.

HouseChainDrama · 19/11/2023 20:06

Thanks for replies, good info! Can't really afford to go further afield.

Is there plenty to do there other than sunbathe and swim? I've never been

Hahahaha

Torganer · 19/11/2023 20:13

I don’t really think of it as a sunbathing place, but I’m sure you could, would be a little cold for me and not a fan of sunbathing really, unless I have a very good book and on my own. The main draws I see are the volcanoes, hiking, surfing, boat trips for sealife watching, the amazing architecture of César Manrique if you go to Lanzarote, and the food and drink.

Mummypete · 19/11/2023 20:15

We did Tenerife for Christmas one year. Definitely wasn’t warm enough to get in the pool or comfortably sunbathe. I wouldn’t spend money on it again but we are heat loving people!

2chocolateoranges · 19/11/2023 20:15

We are heading to The canaries in a few weeks, we have friends who are just home and it was 27 degrees. Weather forecast is saying 25 degrees and average for December is 22. So way warmer than Britain for sure.

we are from Scotland and anything over 14 degrees is sunbathing weather! 🤣🤣

CombatBarbie · 19/11/2023 20:17

Have been at new year and it was 26 degrees with a wind, but nice enough to sunbathe

Iwanttheraintostop · 19/11/2023 20:18

We were there Christmas 2021 and they had a heat wave so it was 27 plus degrees. Been there before when it was 20/21 but when it's sunny with no wind that feels v warm and warm enough for my kids to swim in the pool and for me to sunbathe in the afternoon.

lilyfire · 19/11/2023 20:22

We went for New Year and it was t shirt weather - early 20s- and lovely to go and look at things but not warm enough to sunbathe/ swim in sea or pool.

tanstaafl · 19/11/2023 20:23

Another couple of hours on the plane in the same southerly direction and you’re at the Cape Verde Islands OP.

Ive read they’re breezy most of the time though.

Pedallleur · 19/11/2023 20:30

For hot you have to go further south. Mauritius, South Africa etc. But obviously expensive

Also diving and other watersports, road cycling, vineyards, caves, cactus garden and a massive Sunday market in the main town.

Loads to see and do in Lanzarote if you've not been before. Temperature variable could be anywhere between 15 and 30 C.

BarbaraofSeville · 19/11/2023 21:03

Plus if you were there on the evening of the 5th January, that's the biggest day of Christmas in Spain and the main towns have the three kings parade.

HeathrowQuestion · 19/11/2023 21:06

I wouldn’t if you really want heat. Go to the ME instead. Its too variable and the canaries are also weird in my experience . They have that odd ‘miles from anywhere’ vibe, with the addition of unfettered building and mass tourism.

GreyDuck · 19/11/2023 21:08

We went to Lanzarote in winter a few years ago. I really liked it, it was very interesting. We did a lot of walking, and visited some museums and architecture. The sunflower guide for walking routes.
It was my perfect kind of weather, 18-20ish. I was comfortable in a lightweight cardigan, no coat. The people who had gone to sunbathe were very disappointed. It would have been cold lying still on a lounger.

We were there early December 2021 and it was pretty chilly definitely.

bellaroo92 · 19/11/2023 21:21

We went for Christmas 3 years ago. It was lovely and warm, around 25. The pools were freezing though and you did need a jacket and trousers at night

Ah thanks, I've been to Cape Verde and didn't love it.
