I'm having trouble believing the travel websites. If you've been, pls spill!

Considering a last minute break as we may between houses this Xmas.

I wouldn’t if you really want heat. Go to the ME instead. Its too variable and the canaries are also weird in my experience . They have that odd ‘miles from anywhere’ vibe, with the addition of unfettered building and mass tourism.

ME is not for me, generally struggle with lack of women's rights etc. but thanks!

ive been to lanzarote twice in the winter and I’d say it was spring-like rather than hot. Pleasant, bright, sunny, but not swimming weather.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 21/11/2023 22:50

Can I piggyback on to this thread and ask if anyone's been there for Easter and what the weather's like then? Considering Lanzarote end of March/early April next year.

ChimneyPot · 21/11/2023 22:53

I go to Lanzarote on 27/28 Dec most years.
Usually in the low 20s. Definitely warm enough to swim outdoors if the pool is heated. Pleasant for sitting out.

Fairly sure there were a few hotter days last year.

WeeSleekitCowrinTimrousBeastie · 21/11/2023 22:56

I've been in late December.

Sunbathing at the pool, beach, water parks all good.

Needed a light jacket in the evenings.

Was 20-22C most days. Much like summer in Scotland.

MarvellousMinnie · 21/11/2023 23:03

@ChimneyPot perfect for us at that time, we go every year. Hot but not too hot...maybe need a light cardigan in the evening but sunbathing/walking, just perfect.

A bit hit and miss at Easter to be honest, could be really warm or quite chilly, and definitely not that warm in the evenings

SittingOnTheChair · 21/11/2023 23:05

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal - I went March / April this year. It was lovely and hot about 27.

Has been known to have different weather though.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 21/11/2023 23:06

Oh, that's disappointing. I was hoping for "consistently warm but not hot", to satisfy both heat-loathing DD, and me, an actual lizard.

Another couple of hours on the plane in the same southerly direction and you’re at the Cape Verde Islands OP.

Ive read they’re breezy most of the time though.

I was going to suggest Cape Verde

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 21/11/2023 23:07

Sorry, I was replying to @NearlyMonday. 27 degrees would be fabulous!

HeathrowQuestion · 21/11/2023 23:08

@HouseChainDrama i hear you. It’s not a problem free holiday region at all.

There is also Cyprus, that is typically quite nice year round?

Knitgoodwoman · 21/11/2023 23:09

DH was in Tenerife today, and it was 29.

IamOliveOil · 21/11/2023 23:15

I’ve been to Gran Canaria in January before and it’s been 22/23 just nice enough to sunbathe in a bikini without sweating, the south west of Gran Canaria is known as the sunniest side and part with least wind. I prefer it a bit cooler to be able to sit out in it all day, going again on 3rd Jan.
A warning tho they do get Calima’s I think a sand storm so we were lucky enough to miss one last time we went but a couple we met said it lasted a week but we had just missed it.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 22/11/2023 00:05

Anyone heard of this thing called the Internet which has actual data on weather conditions for pretty well any where on earth?

Or you could rely on MN users...

OliviaFlaversham · 22/11/2023 00:17

We went to The Gambia for a couple of weeks in December and it was hot without being sweltering. Also cheaper than Cape Verde.

CornTheCob · 22/11/2023 00:41

I've been laid out on the beach and the pool topping up my tan in the canaries in December and January a few times, it's lovely and warm, especially Gran Canaria.

OhamIreally · 22/11/2023 12:52

Low 20's I would say. I went just before Christmas last year you can see the difference in climate from the UK and Canaries in the attached pictures. One was from the plane leaving, and the other is the next morning when we woke up.
Culturally it's a wasteland though.

Sexlivesofthepotatomen · 22/11/2023 13:07

I've been in Lanzarote and Tenerife many, many times over Christmas and New Year and it's always been mid 20's, people in the sea (me included), shorts & vests during the day and a light jumper/cardi/jacket for evenings if required.

Whatever temp it is though, it'll be warmer than the uK

NearlyMonday · 22/11/2023 14:05

So I suppose it’s down to personal preference, and now hot is hot enough? DH feels like he’s been short changed unless it’s too hot to walk about round the pool without flip flops whereas other people are quite happy with 20 degrees?

justasking111 · 22/11/2023 14:54

One year first week in January I spent a couple of hours looking for a coat

MeDearNoDear · 22/11/2023 15:01

We've been to Gran Canaria (Maspalomas) for the last two years at the end of Dec beginning of Jan and it's been 23/24 during the day and cooler at night. Perfectly fine for swimming and sunbathing, and I've never needed a coat a night.

Nousernamesleftatall · 22/11/2023 15:06

Go to the south of Gran Canaria. It’s hottest there. We have been there over Christmas. Early 20’s to mid- 20’s perfectly nice to sunbathe in. Make sure you book a hotel with a heated pool.

friendlycat · 22/11/2023 15:13

We go every Christmas and New Year. But you want south Gran Canaria. It's the most southern Canary Island and the south of the island has a micro climate that is just fabulous. I have been to Tenerife at Christmas with mixed weather.

Look at Puerto Mogan if you want quiet or Puerto Rico if you want more lively.

Early to mid 20s every day. Sunbathing on the beach, the sea is cold though. Can be coolish in the evenings if eating outside so you want light jacket, cardigan and I tend to wear lightweight palazzo type trousers. Not summer sundress type wear in the evening. Actually layers are good for the evening.

The sun tends to lose its strength about 4.30 to 5.15pm and it gets dark about 6.15.

Even if it's an odd cloudy day, people just mill around sightseeing, eating and drinking etc in shorts and tshirts.

MsBubbles85 · 22/11/2023 17:22

I am from Gran Canaria and go there every late December. The weather can go from early 20s to late 20s - my husband, he is English, goes to the beach every time we've been, we go to the capital Las Palmas.
If you want guaranteed good weather, go to the south: anywhere from Maspalomas, playa del Inglés, San Agustín, Puerto Rico, Puerto Mogán, Taurito

If you want to go to the capital area, I'd recommend to stay along the area of playa de Las Canteras which is the city beach.

In terms of activities, you have hiking in Pico de Las Nieves for example.
You have also some cultural activities to do like visit the old town centre (Triana & Vegueta area) in Las Palmas, the house were Christopher Colombus stayed when he stopped on his way to America, the Canarian museum, Casa-Museo Pérez Galdós (a famous Spanish writer), Elder Museum (science one)...
The pics attached have been taken during our trips in December
