Thoughts on Pete Doherty documentary?

Just that really.

I thought it was a rather ‘slight’ documentary in some ways, but it had its moments.

Fitting (and genius) that he should end up in France it occurred to me.

The Louie Theroux one? I thought he came across as an absolute knob, I pity his poor wife.

NoPumpkins · 17/11/2023 16:25

Oh dear, based on the monosyllabic response so far, think I regret this post already. Time to hide it, yh.l? Or converse with kitty-in-de-house?

I thought it was unexpectedly moving. He's obviously much worse alcoholic than he lets on as well, the pain in his oesophagus when he swigged the brandy down from the bottle toward the end was alarming.

Notimetocook · 17/11/2023 16:42

Moving and sad. A gentle sensitive man, whatever you think of his drug use /lifestyle choices.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 17/11/2023 16:49

I don’t think it dug deep at all. Pete Doherty seems all over the place and I didn’t get the impression he’s in a position to talk about his past with any truth.

it was interesting but I don’t think I learned anything new.

This was my summary of the Louis Theroux documentary too. He doesn't want to be off the drugs, he has no remorse about Mark Blanco, and I was left wondering where this push to rebrand him has come from.

He's probably got ulcers and when he remarked he knows he won't see his latest baby grow up it spoke volumes.

LyTinWheedle · 17/11/2023 17:01

I know @Username467849865 and probably scaring/raw areas at the bottom of his oesophagus. The odd fat distribution too ??cirrhosis causing hormonal issues? And the cheese!

Addiction is a sad and terrible thing.

verityswims · 17/11/2023 17:29

What channel is this on?

hermioneee · 17/11/2023 17:32

I think LT docs tend to work better when the subject actively wants to talk about themselves. I couldn't figure out what PD wanted from the doc; it felt awkward and quite sad.

TerfTalking · 17/11/2023 17:33

I saw a clip on TikTok or something, didn’t realise it was recent as he’s been bloated for years. Will have to find it on replay.

got it.

BBC Iplayer series 2 episode 2

WitcheryDivine · 17/11/2023 17:34

I only saw half of it but I found it moving too. I’m the right age to have absolutely loved him when the Libertines first came along - young enough to have seen him as a really talented poetic soul rather than old enough to spot that he was an absolute mess even at that point/possibly talking a load of rubbish. Still have a soft spot.

Awful to hear him talking about not seeing his daughter grow up, and what a mess he is in physically.

verityswims · 17/11/2023 17:36

I'll watch later this evening.

grayhairdontcare · 17/11/2023 17:37

He wasn't there to bare his sole .
He was there for the cash!

Maddy70 · 17/11/2023 17:42

I saw him live a couple of weeks ago, he's slimmed down since that documentary. He looked really well

The Louie Theroux one? I thought he came across as an absolute knob, I pity his poor wife.

My thoughts exactly.

I have very little sympathy with people who are born to relative privilege, take up a drug habit, feel sorry for themselves about it, blame what was perhaps an unusual but ultimately unproblematic childhood, then continue with their habit to the detriment of their family even though they have the money to change their lives.

My blood boiled when he said he wouldn't see his latest child grow up - I thought "Fucking well try and do something about it then". Accepting that you'll leave your child without a father because of your own behviours isn't a state of mind I can have any kind of empathy for.

Gowlett · 17/11/2023 17:49

I only know PD from his Kate Moss days.
Hazard most people are the same, unless they’re fans of his music. Seems a strange person / topic to choose.
The only interesting angle is his former drug abuse?

LyTinWheedle · 17/11/2023 17:59

Good to know @Maddy70, addiction is a terrible disease and if he is able to have a calm and happy last couple of decades that would be amazing for him and his children.

I'm not sure what someones relative privilege has to do with mental illness and addiction, it's a great leveller like that. I think he is 'fucking well trying' to get to where he is now. Might just leave this as comments like that boil my piss and raise my blood pressure. You obviously have no clue about addiction in the slightest.

CJ7 · 17/11/2023 18:00

@verityswims it is on iPlayer.

ElephantGrey101 · 17/11/2023 18:04

He seemed quite traumatised by his own past. He didn’t like the person he used to be. It was sad when he said he wanted to live to hear Billie-May talk it was too much to hope that he will live to see her grow up. He is off the drugs but not the booze.

Albioncreed · 17/11/2023 18:44

I’m a libertines fan (hence my username). And really a big fan of his music. I really wanted to like him in this documentary: but I just couldn’t.

the feeling I got was that he came off drugs and married Katia on sufference. As though he had only done those things as she gave him an ultimatum. And him having the kate moss suitcase was just cringe. Sure, he dated one of the most beautiful and famous women in the world. But… it was what, at least 15 years ago. Time to move on bro.

libertines have a new album out soon… and his wife has recently released a documentary so probably why he’s in the spotlight again.

re Marc Blanco. I doubt he did was responsible for his death. But I would be surprised if he actually remembers much about that night as he was too out of it

Jellykat · 17/11/2023 18:55

I found it interesting, he came across as thoughtful, reflective and sensitive.
but then i've known a lot of drug addicts.. hopefully he can turn the last bit (drink) around, for his daughters sake, he was very sweet with her.

Hearmenow23 · 17/11/2023 19:10

I thought he was sober and a reformed character living in France, so I was a bit surprised to see that he's an alkie. His wife demanded marriage and the regular injections to stop his heroin use. She must have been shitting herself when he went back to the UK for that festival.

He just doesn't give a shit about anyone. Owing the restaurant owner money and sitting there with his long dirty fingernails.

I like his music but he's completely overrated. I'm surprised I watched it after watching the other doc of him running past the dead body.

He's clearly still in the thick of it all.

memyselfi · 17/11/2023 19:13

Do addicts really have a choice though ?
I think he's doing the best he can .
