Thoughts on Pete Doherty documentary?

Just that really.

I thought it was a rather ‘slight’ documentary in some ways, but it had its moments.

Fitting (and genius) that he should end up in France it occurred to me.

I really rate him. He lyrics are genius, he's such a soft soul. I enjoyed seeing back with Karl. I saw them together early 2000s at Brixton. 'Can't Stand Me Now' is a great depiction of their breakdown. However Up The Bracket must be one of the best debut albums.

I don't think he felt pressure to marry, he said it's thing I could do to show Katia there is and never will be anyone else, then he sighs and says I love my boo boo.

Why do men hold babies away from them when they feed them?

He's pretty much fucked. Whatever that rum/blackcurrant liqueur was hurt him.

Katia has known him for years, yes she doesn't trust that he won't use again, so far play to her for the injections. Too many people put up with addicts. He was very happy to party in the UK though.

I'll be interested to see her documentary. She accepts him and what it is. It's clear he's never going to be completely clean.

I know Marc Blanco died going over the balcony and running past his body is unforgivable, but was he the one who made a 'documentary' in the early days, just latching on claiming to be a friend, and he was clearly (not saying it was Marc) annoying them.

Well that was a big post. I'm going to shit up now 😁

*shut 🙄

he looked shocking
i missed the beginning but it was pretty fascinating.

The Libertines were over-hyped & crap. Doherty was a talentless junkie loser. Now he’s a forgotten, obese talentless junkie loser.

I know Mark Blanco's family. They are still suffering because no one will investigate properly or confess what actually happened. PD stepped over Mark as he lay dying and nothing will convince me he doesn't know what happened. Scum is too kind a word for him.

dayswithaY · 18/11/2023 08:48

He definitely knows what happened, it was written all over his face!

When Louis drank from the bottle, I had to look away. Pete’s mouth has been there Louis!

This is the issue. I have had nights where I was so out of it I may struggle to remember things, but if something dark happened I was catapulted back to real life straight away. This is a man’s life! The fact that on the documentary he says Mark was ‘annoying’ him and his friends is despicable. No empathy.

I couldn’t stop thinking about Mark from the second that documentary came on.

I don’t think LT should have bothered. PD is a lousy waste of space who can’t even reflect on what happened and it’s an insult to Mark Blanco and his family.

I’m sure I’ve annoyed plenty of people in my life, I’m clearly very lucky in that case not to have died in suspicious circumstances.

Monkeyfloor · 18/11/2023 09:07

I have never been interested in him/his music but generally give any L Theroux doc a go. I found it really interesting and in parts moving. He seemed traumatised, fragile, selfish - all of it. The narcissism doesn’t offend me so I found it very watchable. It just put me back in touch with the basic point that humans are such complicated things with a capacity for poetry, creativity, beauty etc but also driven by such basic urges.

Coldwater12 · 18/11/2023 09:11

On a different note, I think LT has lost his touch. His documentaries used to be so good - probing, subtly relentless, sharp. These celebrity docs are way too soft and go nowhere. I think LT has bought into his own hype - I listened to him interview Nick Cave on his Spotify podcast and I was mortified how much he spoke and liked the sound of his own voice.

Could be anti psychotics. I wouldn’t be surprised if he takes them. In his last book he mentioned voices. And his behaviors lead me to think he does have some MH issues.

I really wanted to like him on this: I’ve liked him on other interviews when he was younger: but now I’m thinking “you’re in your 40s mate, got a beautiful wife and new baby and 2 other kids, it’s time you grew up”

dumdededdumdum · 18/11/2023 09:13

That it depicted the bewilderment of addiction and how unpoetic that is. I think the Matthew Perry book is interesting for this. Addiction is a sad sad disease too.

MyCircumference · 18/11/2023 09:15

the link earlier led me to a jonathan ross interview from 2006, he was implanted with anti heroin then!
still the same now

the man at the festival who was up for it was shocking.

Agreed, I didn't think people like that still existed!

I had an ex who was obsessed with Pete. He was a narcissist too. Funny how they band together.

kerstina · 18/11/2023 09:16

Addicts usually are sensitive souls ,it’s how they dull and try and control their feelings I think . Then sadly once addicted and try and come off it’s a battle to just function with out them. .If not on hard drugs usually on prescription medication. However he certainly seems addicted to alcohol even if he does say he can go a week with out it .He looks bloated and has a beer belly.
I always enjoy Louis Theroux but do think there wasn’t much of a connection between the two of them.

ladygindiva · 18/11/2023 09:20

MirandaGreenwood · 17/11/2023 17:43

My thoughts exactly.

I have very little sympathy with people who are born to relative privilege, take up a drug habit, feel sorry for themselves about it, blame what was perhaps an unusual but ultimately unproblematic childhood, then continue with their habit to the detriment of their family even though they have the money to change their lives.

My blood boiled when he said he wouldn't see his latest child grow up - I thought "Fucking well try and do something about it then". Accepting that you'll leave your child without a father because of your own behviours isn't a state of mind I can have any kind of empathy for.

I agree

thebear1 · 18/11/2023 09:20

Having seen the cctv image on the documentary about Mark Blanco of him running past Mark's body and his statement at the end I have no sympathy for the way his life has turned out. Sad for his family but not him.

Livelovebehappy · 18/11/2023 09:28

Any small sympathy I might have ever had for him disappeared with the Mark Blanco case. Pictures of him running away from the scene of the incident, then refusing to provide Mark’s poor mother with any information around why her son died, despite him being there and obviously knowing something. A horrible man…..

justjeansandanicetop · 18/11/2023 09:46

I thought it was interesting, but agree LT didn't really probe too deeply. He seemed quite cautious and unsure around PD I felt, and there was an awkwardness.

I've enjoyed the Libertines music over the years but other than that didn't know much about PD other than he's a bit grubby and what did Kate Moss see in him.

He was articulate and thoughtful and obviously fairly smart.

I just got the impression he was living his whole life under duress.

The acceptance that he won't see his baby grow up.

I just don't think he wants to be there. He says he still gets "tingles" when he thinks about the heroin.

It's awful to say but I just kind of felt it was all a bit futile. I just felt "what's the point?" He doesn't want any of this. He wants to just get completely fcked up on heroin, and for it to kill him. Everything else just seems an inconvenience to him.

Addiction on that level really is terrifying.

Awrite · 18/11/2023 09:46

His account of the Mark Blanco death was very much about himself. Why he shouldn't feel guilty.

Interesting that he said he knew he hadn't killed him when his girlfriend (who he couldn't remember's name) shouted at the barman who wouldn't serve him 'he hasn't killed anyone '. He said he knew then that he hadn't done it.

I understood that he couldn't actually remember what happened.

Aye, this man has his demons alright. The level of shame that he is living with is off the charts.

ToThineOwnSelf · 18/11/2023 09:47

Why is a murderer being featured in a Louis Theroux doc?

GoingOffOnATangent · 18/11/2023 09:56

Just watched the LT doc cos of this thread! Nice slow start to my Saturday, which is rare. ☺️
I agree with almost everything everyone else has said.
On the one hand if you listened to him and only considered it from his pov you could see what a immature mess he was, riding the dragon and not caring, and how things unfolded the way they did.
But as a human he's so utterly selfish, I struggle to see how, despite whatever charm and intellect he possesses, any woman could want to create a family with him.
The damage he has done to other people, including his own children presumably given he has not been a father, is appalling and he showed no awareness, or regret, or responsibility for any of it, the programme was just like one long shrug.
He was dissembling when taking about MB and the lack of compassion for the mum was cold. The most he said was he 'could understand', but I don't think he's given a moment to actually contemplate her feelings... Like many addicts he is so switched off from his own depth of feelings escaping them all the time, that someone else's are equally distant and ultimately remote and abstract.

justjeansandanicetop · 18/11/2023 10:15

Yes, @GoingOffOnATangent I didn't realise he had two other children until he briefly mentioned them.

I got the impression he doesn't see them. I wonder if he supports them financially? Or even if he is in a position to do so. His lifestyle / financial position wasn't very clear.

Sadly, despite his wives efforts, I think it's just a matter of time before he dies from a heroin overdose. He doesn't want to be here, he just wants to be on heroin.

SallyWD · 18/11/2023 10:31

Just read this thread then watched the documentary. I've never had any interest in PD but enjoyed it!
I didn't think it was particularly awkward. They chatted away quite nicely.
The section about the actor's death. I actually thought PD was being completely honest. He wasn't pretending to feel great remorse, he didn't take responsibility but he was clearly very uncomfortable about the incident.
As for his relationship - he seemed to love his wife. I don't feel sorry for her she's a grown woman and knew exactly what she was getting involved with. He never pretended to be something else. Her choice. She seems to have successfully tamed him for now but who knows how long it will last.

I think she genuinely loves him. And I think he probably loves her as much as he is able to love someone
