Where do the older crowd (40+) go for a night out in London?

I have a friend coming over from Kent next month and we’d like to go somewhere where we could have a drink but possibly dance too, basically a pub with a dance floor or a club that's not too "clubby". The problem is, we really don't want to be fish out of water and feel ridiculous among young people.

She's coming on 8th December and I'd appreciate any tips, thanks.

When going out with a mixed age group (20s to 50s), starting at Dirty Martini at St Pauls and a short walk to Pop World seems to keep everyone happy.

BetsyBobbins · 16/11/2023 20:49

Pop World seems a bit on the young side, lol.

I went to Dirty Martini but in Covent Garden ages ago, didn't know they had one in St Paul's too

The Ned - in the City?

I love Be At One. The one in Russell Street is my fave. Cheesy tunes and great cocktails.

Thanks but anything in the City is not very appealing to either of us. I'd rather go to a pub with a band or a DJ with some pop tunes or similar

Hopeful bump, anyone else?

What are you in to music wise? The Social on Little Portland Place has a good mixed clientele.

Ginmonkeyagain · 17/11/2023 13:01

Spiritland in Kings X is also pretty decent.

If we fancy a bit of a pissed boogie in a pub we tend to to pretty local rather than town.

Actually just noticed the date - peak Xmas party season. You'll be fine, the while place will be full of office Xmas parties. Pissed people of all ages.

The Ned, whilst in the City, is not very “City” if you see what I mean! It is a loud buzzy place with live music, several restaurants and bars and not full of people young enough to be your kids!

Thanks. Spiritland seems v good but The Social hasn't got their December calendar on their site yet.

I also had a look at Ronnie Scott's, they have a club night upstairs and it seems to be pretty good. Ditto Jazz Cafe, as far as I remember it also attracts a slightly older crowd.

Half Moon Putney might be worth a look.

Joey1976 · 18/11/2023 06:33

Try The Cross. Older crowd if you like house music

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/11/2023 07:10

Dirty Martini and Pop World are my kind of hell.

Spiritland is lovely, really good vibe, but it’s a beardy place at heart and I’ve never seen anyone dancing in there.

No suggestions, sorry, but selfishly hoping I might find ideas.

NisekoWhistler · 18/11/2023 07:17

Archer street is always a fun night and I'd say the lowest age you see in there is 30

catattacks · 18/11/2023 07:45

Do people dance at The Ned?

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 18/11/2023 07:55

Archers street soho

sakura06 · 18/11/2023 07:57

The Rivoli Ballroom in Brockley has 70s/80s and early 90s nights, as well as Latin, Funk and Soul. There's also a night in southeast London called 'Haven't Stopped Dancing Yet' but that's on Dec 2nd.

1990s · 18/11/2023 08:07

Archer Street and Little Nans both good suggestions.

Rivoli Ballroom great suggestion if happy to go somewhere less central.

The Horse and Groom on Curtain Road is fun and turns dancy, and there are a few others similar round there like Jaguar Shoes etc.

I think there's a real gap in the market here. I would like somewhere with lots of comfy seats, clean toilets, plenty of bar staff, not too crowded and music that isn't too loud that you can't hear yourself think.

GonnaBeYoniThisChristmas · 18/11/2023 08:20

Totally agree it’s a gap in the market. Basically a table set-up where you can drink nice booze comfortably and then occasionally get up to a busy dance floor.

I can’t face the idea of queueing outside, checking in coat, being in super noisy club with tiny handbag crowd. Wish I could! 😀

Oblomov23 · 18/11/2023 18:18

Shame there's such a gap in the market.
