How do you feel about people watching horror films on flights?

Namely horror movies though I guess can also apply to movies with graphic or sexual scenes!
On an iPad in standard class (so not in a cosy business class corner 😂)

Had a run in with a woman on a flight today over this so am interested to see what others think!

I don't give a hoot. I don't think I have ever noticed what anyone else on a place is watching.

Were you the horror watcher or the reprimander OP?

WonderingWanda · 16/11/2023 19:54

I've never really noticed what anyone else is watching on a plane.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 16/11/2023 21:42

Hah, I wrote this then proceeded to get on the second flight (where I was not chastised for watching a horror movie 😂)

Yes I was the watcher (didn’t mean to be so vague!) and absolutely had headphones in (I’m not a total arsehole 😂)

I was watching Truth or dare from Blumhouse (love Blumhouse movies, highly recommend!) there’s a couple of gory spots, the odd jump scare but it’s not horrific

I was in a window seat and she was a few rows infront and went to the toilet behind us, I could see her standing watching in the reflection of the corner of the iPad (so really had to have a stare 😂), she reached over several other people to tap me on the head and tell me that what I was watching was disgusting, anyone around me could be triggered (🙄) and I should be embarrassed she had walked past several times and was horrified by it apparently.
I laughed and told her to watch her own iPad and carried on watching it (v grown up 😂) And she stormed off back to her seat and kept turning to look at me and tutting. Couple next to me thought it was hilarious and no one else have half a shit

I’m not going to stop watching horror movies on a plane, I don’t watch horrifically gory ones in public because that’s a bit harder to avoid but yeah, I’m not stopping watching 12 or 15 rated movies, but was v curious to hear other peoples opinions

Quartz2208 · 16/11/2023 23:10

Yeah that is not a movie to get upset by.

scrunchie2 · 17/11/2023 12:40

@limefrog okay well the person watching it can decide whether they want to risk watching an 18 from the description of the film 🤷🏻‍♀️ my opinion still stands that no one should have to pander to other adults around them. I wouldn't put an 18 on if I had kids around me but other adults can look elsewhere if they don't like what's on my own screen.

If it became obvious that the film was heavy on gore or sex scenes that were making me feel uncomfortable to watch infront of other people then I'd turn it off but if someone tapped me on the head to have a go at me about what I was watching as per the OP's update I'd definitely leave it on!

Better that than my 7 hour train journey with the couple watching a Mrs Brown's Boys box set sans headphones 😭

For me it would depend on just how graphic the content was and how easy it was for the other person to see.

For example, I find gore and particularly anything involving amputation or severed limbs really triggering. If someone was watching something like Saw in the seat next to me I would find that really difficult to cope with because the stuff of my literal nightmares would be in my field of vision.

I wouldn't like it if the person next to me or next to my child was watching something incredibly gory or sexual. But I wouldn't get worked up about something that was, say, 12 or 15 rated. I haven't seen the film you are referring to.

If this woman wasn't even seated next to you then she was being a total nosy fucker.

Since the people who were actually sitting next to you don't seem to have minded, I don't think you did anything wrong.

MarleyandMarleyWoo · 17/11/2023 13:06

I wouldn’t watch gore (or explicit sex scenes for that matter) in any circumstance on a flight and, I have to say, I’d be cautious about anything too unsettling or horror generally in such a public place, particularly if there were children around.

Janeandme · 17/11/2023 13:09

I also think fine op as long as you angled the screen so the person next to you couldn’t watch, easily done in a window seat.

bahhamburgers · 17/11/2023 13:12

People shouldn’t be so bloody nosey.

My ex husband was on a flight once, sat next to a mother and her child. He was watching Sweeny Todd on the headrest screen, the mother made a bit of a scene telling him to turn it off incase her child saw something inappropriate. He was a bit stunned. She was the one checking, he said the child was glued to his own screen oblivious.

Cabin crew told her to switch seats with her child (who was sat in the middle of them), if she didn’t like it, he paid for his seat he could watch whatever was provided.

BotterMon · 17/11/2023 13:15

No issue unless the person watching was jumping like a jack in a box or screaming continuously at the scary scenes

ToBeOrNotToBee · 17/11/2023 13:32

As long as its not illegal, go for it.

However, if I were sat next to children I absolutely would not be watching anything with sexual scenes or graphic imagery.

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 17/11/2023 19:22

I'm going to go against the grain here and say I don't think anything with 18 cert should be watched on a flight or train etc. People can't avoid seeing it. If for example you are at an aisle seat people 2 to 3 aisles back can see. Unless you are using a very small screen it's impossible to angle enough so no one can see if, presuming you are not business class of course. All very well to say they shouldn't look but they can, particularly children or teenagers.

limefrog · 18/11/2023 07:19

@IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece Yeah, I do agree with you in that situation. The woman sounds like a bit of a 'do gooder' to be honest - she's saying that others could be 'triggered', but was anyone? Was she? Doesn't sound like it and the couple next to you who were the ones actually in view of your screen for the flight didn't care at all.

I feel like if someone was next to you and actually upset/ bothered by what they were seeing, you'd probably turn it off. But that wasn't the case.

Absolutely, if someone politely asked then I would totally turn it off. But no one around me seemed to even be half gazing at my screen and certainly no one seemed to care one dot! I think she was just bored after we were delayed 😂

Clearly the only person who was triggered was that woman!! Sounds like her inability to control everyone around her is what’s triggering her, more than whatever you were watching OP.

Adults can watch what they like in public places, excepting anything illegal obviously. There’s nothing anyone can do to stop them. It’s that simple. Is it discourteous to watch something really graphic or gory? Probably, but as we can’t control what others do we should focus on what we can control - our reaction.

39and · 18/11/2023 10:07

None of her business. She sounds like anything would "trigger" her. Glad you didn't listen

limefrog · 18/11/2023 10:15

'Adults can watch what they like in public places, excepting anything illegal obviously. There’s nothing anyone can do to stop them. It’s that simple.'

@Malarandras I've just been looking this up as I'm interested, and it sounds like potentially someone watching something graphic/ sexual/ violent in public could be flouting the law around 'offending public decency'. But there are specific circumstances -mainly that you have to be actually upsetting someone.

If you are harassing someone (e.g. deliberately making someone uncomfortable by watching porn/ showing distressing images in their presence) or 'causing a disturbance' (e.g. if you were watching something violent/ sexual and people were upset by it and you refused to turn it off) - that would be arguably breaking the law around public decency.

Whether or not anyone would actually enforce that is uncertain.

I suspect cases like someone watching porn deliberately to harass a woman would probably be more likely acted upon than someone feeling uncomfortable about a horror movie.
