How do you feel about people watching horror films on flights?

Namely horror movies though I guess can also apply to movies with graphic or sexual scenes!
On an iPad in standard class (so not in a cosy business class corner 😂)

Had a run in with a woman on a flight today over this so am interested to see what others think!

It wouldn't bother me, I would judge their choice of horror movie though.

Diverpanda · 16/11/2023 18:11

Depends what you mean by horror. I'm a huge horror film fan and I'd be shocked by someone's watching Human Centipede or A Serbian Film on a flights.

No problem with a mainstream horror like Scream or Friday the 13th.

Though if a 5 year old was in the seat next to me I'd probably choose something else.

Harry Styles giving really bad oral sex???? Shock What film was this?

I watched The Menu when I was last on a long haul flight, that was pretty gruesome but nobody complained.

I want to say ‘don’t worry darling’ or something like that. He had a right good try, I’ll give him that. But sexy, it wasn’t.

SkyFullofStars1975 · 16/11/2023 18:13

Wouldn't bother me, in fact I'd think they were sensible having watched one home alone once and not being able to sleep for days after! I would imagine it dials the horror down somewhat.

BlackboardMonitorVimes · 16/11/2023 18:14

I watched Bridgerton on a recent flight. I angles my screen to the table at certain scenes.

If you are watching something on a large screen like a laptop or iPad it is easily viewed from behind you. I would definitely be wary of kids behind me if I was watching any adult content.

GoodVibesHere · 16/11/2023 18:17

I think it's pretty poor to watch a horror on a flight. I find you can usually what someone is watching if you're in an aisle seat and they are adjacent and the row in front. What if a child saw it, or even someone walking along the aisle to the toilet. I don't want to see gore or horror at anytime at all, never mind on a flight.

I am a nervous flyer so perhaps that clouds my judgement but surely a flight should be kept as calming and as peaceful as it can be. Actually I'd say the same applies on a train or bus or any public space, you shouldn't have to see a video of something which could upset you and people should be mindful of others and watch that sort of stuff at home not in public.

MissHavershamReturns · 16/11/2023 18:19

I wouldn’t like it if someone next to me watched horror or anything graphic but wouldn’t complain either. Think it would be pretty irresponsible to watch next to young kids.

RichPetunia · 16/11/2023 18:20

No horror. No film that could cause embarrassment to anyone sitting nearby. It's just common courtesy.

Ponderingwindow · 16/11/2023 18:21

as screen quality improves every year, we do need to start to be mindful of what we are watching in public. I don’t think it is fair to impose all of my viewing choices on other people, especially children.

Surely2023IsTheYearForMyRainbowBabyYeahRight · 16/11/2023 18:21

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest. In fact I'd also be watching one

Spirallingdownwards · 16/11/2023 18:22

They actually show them on the planes anyway so what difference if on an ipad?

Flickersy · 16/11/2023 18:24

I think it would be polite not to, given that catching a glimpse at the wrong time could genuinely distress some people and they're not in a situation where they can move away. It can't be avoided in your peripheral vision unless you have your eyes closed.

That said, there's no rules against it.

I think keep whatever you're watching in public anywhere at a 12 or 15 max and you'll probably be ok!

AirlineIssues · 16/11/2023 18:27

A long time ago, when films were still projected on a ‘wall’ in the plane, they had a disaster movie where a plane landed in water and was sinking.
The whole if the flight (the whole 10 hours) was above water 😂😂

To be fair, I didn’t like it. I am not keen on disaster movies in the first place (i slept instead) but can You imagine if someone is scared of flying??

GuitarGeorgina · 16/11/2023 18:35

Complete indifference

THisbackwithavengeance · 16/11/2023 18:37

I would be mindful. Watching an 18 film when sat next to kids would be inappropriate IMO.

limefrog · 16/11/2023 18:40

I wouldn't care if someone was sat next to me watching it.

If my child was sat next to someone watching it then I would ask them to angle their screen away or turn it off. I think that would be perfectly reasonable if it was a 15/18 certificate and an underage child can see it.

If you are upsetting an adult sat next to you then again, the considerate thing would be to angle your screen away or stop.

When you are next to someone on a plane with an ipad, it's almost impossible to 'divert your eyes' for hours and hours - it's right there. You are going to see some gore/ blood etc and some people are sensitive to that.

Obviously it's not the law, and they don't have to, but it's just respectful/ common courtesy to try not to upset people around you.

limefrog · 16/11/2023 18:42

Also it really has to be the same for all 18 certificate/ adult content.

Some people saying porn isn't OK, but horror movies are.

How are you defining that? A lot of horror movies/ 18 certificate movies include explicit sex scenes and nudity, so how are you categorising those?

You're either OK with people watching adult content or not, surely?

Roselilly36 · 16/11/2023 18:42

I don’t pay any attention to what others are watching on the plane, assuming headphones etc.

wited · 16/11/2023 18:43

Couldn't care less.

What were you watching?

scrunchie2 · 16/11/2023 18:43

I wouldn't if kids could see the screen but I'm
not pandering to grown adults just because they don't like a certain genre. Full on gore or constant sex scenes if probably think twice on.

limefrog · 16/11/2023 18:46

But if a person starts watching an 18 certificate/ adult movie on a plane, they haven't necessarily seen it before and might not know the extent of the 'full on gore/ constant sex scenes' in advance.

So how do you know if a certain movie is OK to watch, without banning all 18+ movies?

Surely that's quite subjective anyway as different people are OK with different levels of violence/ gore/ nudity etc. Who decides?

Pollyannamex · 16/11/2023 18:47

Sometimes I skip forward if it’s a long and gratuitous sex scene and I’m watching on my iPad with others around me who might be able to see.
but usually I don’t care, especially for horror films. People don’t have to look.

id rather sit next to you than a child with no headphones watching kids crap at full volume

MaliciaKeys · 16/11/2023 18:50

I watched the horror film on the console provided by the aircraft. They had a selection of films to choose from. I wouldn't watch a really gory horror film on an iPad. The ones provided by the aircraft entertainment company are pretty low key.

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 16/11/2023 18:54

Just don't scream out loud. DP watched Hurt Locker next to me on a plane and jumped and screamed. Never heard him scream in fear before or since and he picked a packed plane...

Agreed.
