How many soft toys do your children have?

RedRobyn2021 · 16/11/2023 11:42

DD is 3 in Feb and already has 16 soft toys, we have bought her 5 of those.. all the others are gifts since she was born.

I want to sell/give some to charity as I think she's got far far too many. What is the norm?

How many do your children have out of interest?

She also has one baby doll and one barbie

Probably the same and she never plays with them and they just take up room. I’m not even sure where some came from.

onlyoneoftheregimentinstep · 16/11/2023 11:45

My DGC have hundreds! All shapes and sizes and they love them all. My DD ( their mum) still has quite a few of her own, so that could account for it!

TiptoeThroughTheToadstools · 16/11/2023 11:52

My kids have hundreds, they love their soft toys and never want to give any away. I have some sympathy because I attach memories to certain soft toys and at the age of 40 I still have about a dozen that I can't bare to part with. My youngest DS (8) loves soft toys and that's all he ever wants for birthdays and christmas. I have 2 DC at 8 and one at 13 and they all treasure their soft toys.

Mine have over 50. There's a big toy box of them. They always take a different one out with them/whenever they have a sleepover somewhere and just like playing with them.

Ankerdam · 16/11/2023 11:56

Is "too fucking many" a reasonable answer?

But like with PPs, my own mum was sentimental with soft toys, which has made me the same, and so on.

Switchasaurous · 16/11/2023 11:57

50 billion or so.

shockeditellyou · 16/11/2023 11:57

One DC: about 2
the other DC: a bazillion, all of which have names, preferences and extensive origin stories. Many hours have been spent ensuring each one is not lost before bedtime :D

yikesanotherbooboo · 16/11/2023 11:57

DC1 had a few; a favourite and then others that came and went in popularity. Not more than 10 at any time apart from during the beanie baby craze.
DC2 had one and wasn't interested in them otherwise.
DC3 had dozens and they were absolutely their favourite thing until they were about 8 or 9 .

ABCXYZ17 · 16/11/2023 11:58

Loads! I did too as a child, she had some of my old ones that my mum didn’t ever throw away!

WYorkshireRose · 16/11/2023 12:00

I'd guess more than 100. Rarely played with but DS will choose and take one to bed sometimes. We've had lengthy discussions in the past about donating them, but he finds a reason with each and every one that means it has to stay.

BatshitFloralDress · 16/11/2023 12:02

Well over 100 between them (wouldn't be surprised if it was over 200). I don't mind though because they get a lot of play.

My sons are 7 and 5 and they do play with them - all the time. They play schools, and the soft toys are the children, the teachers/TAs/headteacher, and the parents. They play Mario 'boss battles' and the soft toys are various allies/baddies etc. They play floor is lava and the soft toys are on teams and have to get from one place to another. If we watch a film they set up a 'cinema' in our lounge with rows of soft toys looking at the TV.

As a PP said they all have names, backstories, like/dislikes, best friends, voices.

When my DS start talking to each other about their soft toys it's like listening to super fans talking about Lord of the Rings or D&D or something - I haven't a clue what they are saying, but they're happy!!

BarnacleBeasley · 16/11/2023 12:09

1 million and he's nicked some of mine too.

YouAndMeAndThem · 16/11/2023 12:14

My daughter is 5 and has over a hundred I think, acquired from various family, friends, Santa visits, Mcdonald happy meals etc etc. 2 full laundry baskets full. We go through every so often and see if there's any she'd like to donate, she will part with a few but not many! She does love them!

kwetu · 16/11/2023 12:16

Too damned many!! Bin bags full, and we got rid of at least half of what they had when we recently moved. All they do is collect dust but the kids will not part with them.

Moominmoko · 16/11/2023 12:18

16!

Mine must seriously have over a hundred. 3 dd's from teenage downwards and soft toys just seem to be the go to present. We have a whole cupboard dedicated to them 😆

DinosaurOfFire · 16/11/2023 12:20

A million gazillion. They have a specific set of Kallax just for cuddly toys that range in size from teeny squishville right up to the giant squishmallow type ones- they are very definitely obsessed and like PP's say, they all have backstories and friendships and so on.

GigiAnnna · 16/11/2023 12:21

Far too many to count, but I have 4 kids. I do a mass cull every once in a while but at the moment the ones they have left they are still attached to. Even my teenager has lots that he is still attached to.

CoodleMoodle · 16/11/2023 12:23

My DD's bed is more soft toys than bed! She's got hundreds of them. And DS is heading the same way... I was the same as a kid, and all of mine are still at DM's. Except the ones I gave to the DC!

I only buy them for the DC now if they're really, really special ones.

riotlady · 16/11/2023 12:24

I would guess 30-40? If given the choice of a toy DD will always pick a soft toy but she only plays with about half of them. I used to secretly cull them to the charity shop when she was younger but now she notices

ememem84 · 16/11/2023 12:24

so many! we have an entire herd of the same unicorns in dd's room (she's 4...) and ds has the biggest toys ever. very kind friends and family bought him a giant teddy, a huge gorilla, a whale, a giraffe and a lion. dd also has a family of varying sized jellycat bunnies. which whilst lovely and soft are the absolute bane of my life at the moment. at bedtime she regularly wants "bunny" but no idea which one. so she usually ends up with at least 7 of the fucjers in her bed with her.....

sadly our charity shops won't take them anymore so it's keep them or bin. and i can't bin them. their faces.....

MarleyandMarleyWoo · 16/11/2023 12:24

A few more than I’d like but I suspect much less than some. He’s two, for reference.
He’s got three rabbits, two bears, a dog and an owl on his bed that he makes a nest out of every night. All but the owl we were given when he was born. He’s then got two old teddies that were mine as a kid, a Christmas penguin (Nov-Jan only 😂) and a London bear from when me and his dad went away. So 10.17 😂

bruceluigimom · 10/06/2024 11:23

My son is 4, and he's got around 20 soft toys already. It’s amazing how quickly they accumulate! We’ve got a mix of gifts and a few we couldn't resist buying ourselves. We did manage to donate a couple to charity, and it felt good knowing they were going to a new home. I recently discovered Bubu Dudu Plush, and I have to admit, I’m obsessed! They’re so adorable and unique. I might have to sneak one into his collection. It’s been really interesting reading everyone’s experiences and getting ideas on managing the toy overload. I think as long as your daughter loves them and they’re not taking over the house, it’s all good. How do you decide which ones to keep and which ones to give away?

Natsku · 10/06/2024 12:04

So so many! My 13 year old still has all of hers, though most of them are kept in the drawers under her bed. My 6 year old has a big wicker laundry basket full of them, plus a massive horse that is bigger than the basket. They are currently all on his bed and he sleeps in a nest of soft toys Grin

telana · 10/06/2024 12:21

We have enough to fill a large laundry size bag. Maybe about 40? We have 2 dcs and have never got rid of any (youngest is 2 so still plays with them). We have bought about 10 - grandparents have bought most of them. I don't really like them as a toy, would much rather have decent building sets or small things with they can manipulate. DCs aren't sentimental about them though.

MargaretThursday · 10/06/2024 12:45

Ds is 17 and has enough soft toy dogs to come to about 1m high in his wardrobe. They're all lying own so they're positioned so they're all lying on top of each other looking outwards.
I suggested some could go but he was horrified.
They live in his cupboard because he has a dust mite allergy!
