Anyone else watching this documentary? Can remember that night so clearly. Am sure my fear of flying stems from that horror.

I lived local (ish) and some items were found on local farmland

I'm going to watch the doc

DanceMumTaxi · 15/11/2023 22:02

The Lockerbie disaster is the first big news story I remember as a child. I would have been 7. Haven’t watched the documentary yet, but I will.

Redglitter · 15/11/2023 22:04

What's the name of the documentary I cant see it anywhere

Papergirl1968 · 15/11/2023 22:19

Yes, very powerful documentary. Absolutely tragic what happened. I remember it well as I would have been about 20.
It was called something like Return to Lockerbie with Lorraine Kelly, on ITV 9pm-10pm.

Lovemykidywinks · 15/11/2023 22:23

It was on ITV 1 finished at 10pm . I was back in the UK because my Dad had died suddenly in 1988 and I went back to Oz the week after Lockerbie from terminal 2 . Watching the poor mother at JFK finding out her daughter had died was absolutely heartbreaking.😢

I was about 25 and back in UK because my Dad had died suddenly. I had to get on a plane from Terminal 2 a week later back to Oz . I have never forgotten that night and the fear of flying set in from that point.
Seeing the Mother at JFK being told her daughter was dead is the most harrowing footage I have ever seen.I do avoid news generally! How do you get over this ever?😔

Not watched, but remember vividly. DD was 5 weeks old. I'd just fed her and she was a bit restless, I was prepared for a long night.
Then it came on the news. DD fell asleep on my knee and I sat and watched the news til morning 😢

Cheshiresun · 15/11/2023 22:41

I was a child when it happened, I don't remember it at the time at all, I don't know why I was oblivious at the time. I was in primary school, but I do remember other disasters following, for example Hillsborough the following April.

As I got older I became aware of it and I often thought about it since. I recall Kim Cattrall said she was meant to be on that flight but cancelled last minute to buy her mother some (can't remember, Royal Daulton maybe) crockery.

I thought tonight's documentary was sensitively done. So very sad.

Nicknacky · 15/11/2023 22:41

My dad was a police officer nowher near Lockerbie and he got sent down just before Christmas to work there. I am embarrassed to say I was an absolute ghoul as a child and when he came home I was asking “dad, dad did you see any bodies?”. I was ten at the time. It’s the only time I’ve ever seen my dad drink heavily and he drank vodka straight that night.

Obviously I had no idea of the sheer scale of the disaster, I just used to love him telling me about his work.

its only in recent years he has spoken about it and I’m now a police officer myself and can appreciate on a small level what he must have seen.

I didn’t watch the documentary purely because I can’t abide Lorraine Kelly🙈

I remember it clearly. There were items from the explosion dropped over Kielder Forest before the plane dropped on Lockerbie. Mountain rescue teams went to Kielder from different parts of the UK to retrieve those things from Kielder. My husband was a mountain rescue team member and went with his team to help with that.
It deeply affected him for years. He needed to talk about it but it was very difficult to listen to.

BeethovenNinth · 15/11/2023 23:10

I remember it vividly - I was very young and watching a film when odd computerised text came up on the screen asking for medical personnel to report for duty. I lived in South Scotland at the time. We had neighbours move near us afterwards who lived on a farm near Lockerbie, who had been utterly traumatised by it at all l. for years we would drive past the site and see the large fence up. I have never stopped thinking about the people affected and in particular the parents who fought to find out the truth for so long.

balltraponthecote · 15/11/2023 23:19

I remember it vividly - I had had a miscarriage earlier that day and was curled up on the sofa when the newsflash came through. An ex of mine was in one of the mountain rescue teams that went to the site. One of the team leaders has written about PTSD suffered by people involved at Lockerbie. My ex had a breakdown some years later.

I remember watching a documentary where they said that a person had been found strapped in and upright in thier plane seat in field . They had managed to find a relative and explain how peaceful they looked. They explained how some parts of the plane were just opened by the explosion and unaffected , so essentially the suddenly loss of cabin pressure would have made anyone who was conscious unconscious before impact within seconds. I found that comforting and have tried to believe it . RIP to all those innocent souls

Roseandstar · 15/11/2023 23:21

Although reading some of the stories above , what I heard appears to have the vast majority. Horrendous also for any one attending

My dad talked about seeing someone and how peaceful she looked. It comforted him.

Treesinmygarden · 15/11/2023 23:32

Husband and I got engaged the same day. When the Lockerbie news emerged, it felt so weird?

Later I mused how two disasters happened the same day,,,

It was also the birthday of my little brother who passed away at 9 days old, when I was 7.

Topofthemountain · 15/11/2023 23:33

I was 10, and like pp this was one of the first major incidents I can remember vividly. I hadn't realised that they had found items in Kielder, despite having visited the area many times.

Cryingmum909 · 16/11/2023 00:19

1 person was found Alive after surviving the fall but they died within minutes of being found

Absolutely heartbreaking.I hope he is recovered now. The documentary definitely highlighted the PTSD that so many people experienced .

An uncle was drafted in from a west Scotland police force to help. I was three months old at the time so obviously can’t pass comment. But he apparently started drinking heavily directly after, there was a ‘punch up’ (he punched my dad) after a minor disagreement years later, numerous incidents, rehab and so sadly nothing that helped him. He passed away far too young due to alcohol related issues. None of my family held resentment, they wanted to help. But he changed as a person after that. Completely traumatised and no one could help.

stealtheatingtunnocks · 16/11/2023 01:11

Lorraine Kelly seems like an odd choice for a documentary like that.

VanillaImpulse · 16/11/2023 01:14

It would appear they couldn't find any other Scottish people unfortunately. Was she being her screen persona "Lorraine" or her real life "Lorraine" one wonders...

RunNurseRun · 16/11/2023 01:34

I was only 7 at the time but remember that night very vividly. We had been at a Christmas party at our church so as kids were up later than normal and it was on the radio on the way home. Although we lived in another part of Scotland some miles away, I remember feeling really frightened that another plane would fall out of the sky. I remember being fascinated by the news reports in the days after and asking my mum what happened to all the people in the plane and she said that it was so quick they would have vanished up to heaven.

When I did my nursing degree in the early 2000’s, I did a forensic medicine course and the professor was the lead pathologist at Lockerbie and a whole lecture was dedicated to it. Seeing the pictures of the various parts of debris, how the events unfolded after the plane crashed and hearing the testimonies of those who were present there was heartbreaking and I completely understand how many have never came to terms with what they saw.

Feministwoman · 16/11/2023 01:38

Lorraine Kelly was a junior reporter, sent to cover the disaster. It was her first big job and catapulted her into covering a major news event
