Anyone with a mirena coil can answer a question please.

Hi all

Yes I know I need to take a pregnancy test but my periods have always been very regular since my coil was fitted so even a day late is unusual.

Just curious to know if anyone has experienced their periods randomly stopping whilst having the coil fitted?

I don't believe I am pregnant but will do a test later.

Sorry posted in Women's health but no answer so thought I'd post here for traffic.

I've had the mirena coil for nearly 5 years and I don't have periods at all anymore. This is my second mirena and I can't remember the last time I had a period

But, if in doubt, do a test - better to know asap if you are pregnant

RagzRebooted · 15/11/2023 14:16

How long have you had it? I had periods for the full 18 months I had my first one in. Most people if they stop, will happen within the first year, but everyone is different. If they've been getting lighter and lighter then it could just be that.

Yes to pregnancy test just to make sure, as it they aren't 100%, but they are very effective.

Amicompletelyinsane · 15/11/2023 14:16

I've not had a period in 8 years. Had it changed after 5 years and didn't even get one then

I’ve recently had my 2nd Mirena fitted and don’t have periods (it is one of the reasons I chose it over the copper coil). How long has yours been fitted for? I can’t recall how quickly my periods stopped.

Vegandiva · 15/11/2023 14:16

The biggest benefit of the mirena coil is that it stops periods for a good percentage of women who have it fitted, I’ve had three and in each instance my period stopped after a short time and stayed stopped until i had it removed.

Check the patient leaflet - as long as you followed the instructions about how long to wait before using it as a form of birth control after having it fitted you should be okay.

QueenBitch666 · 15/11/2023 14:21

I didn't have periods at all whilst I had the mirena coil

Dinoswearunderpants · 15/11/2023 14:23

Thanks @FooFighter99 Did your periods stop right away? Just seems odd to randomly stop after 2 years. I'm at work now but sent hubby out to buy a test to do later.

@RagzRebooted It's been in for 2 years so seems odd to just stop now. They've always been regular 28 days. Fairly light.

Everything I've read says only 2 in 10 women stop having periods all together. Just thought it would be good to hear from real people.

MIne are stopping. 2nd coil, and had one now for 8 years. I think it is the menopause kicking in.

Kyogo67 · 15/11/2023 14:30

I had periods the first 18 months but gradually lighter and further apart. Then they stopped

Dinoswearunderpants · 15/11/2023 14:34

Maybe that's happening to me. I mean I'll be thrilled if I don't have periods but it's that instant panic of 'could I be pregnant'.

I have just had one fitted and my doctor said they stop in most cases.

Thank you. Did they say when they might stop? I just need to do a test now as I'm so worried.

I have had one for nearly 9 years now and I'm pretty sure I had periods for the first year, but they got lighter and lighter until they stopped altogether and I was overjoyed. Every so often I will get the faintest spotting but it's pretty infrequent, maybe once a year at most.

I'd take a pregnancy test just in case and to set your mind at rest, but I'd bet you anything this is just the Mirena doing its thing.

Colette88 · 15/11/2023 16:03

I have a Mirena for heavy bleeding which stopped straight after insertion

DwarfPlanetFiend · 15/11/2023 16:06

I'm on my third Mirena. I still get PMT but my periods are so light I don't need to wear anything more than a panyliner

SoddingWeddings · 15/11/2023 16:06

Mine stopped after about 6 months with my first coil. Came back the month after removal.

With this one, I've had regular but very light (don't need tampons or pads) for the first 10 months. I didn't have any period last month and a very light single day this month.

Not bleeding is normal with the coil.

DrMarshaFieldstone · 15/11/2023 16:07

I am on my fourth Mirena. I had random spotting with the first and my periods stopped altogether after about six months. After both children I had them fitted before my periods resumed after the births, so I haven't had a period at all for about six years now. It is incredibly liberating. If it's your first Mirena then it's possible that your periods have taken this long to stop but you are wise to do a test regardless.

gotomomo · 15/11/2023 16:07

I skip some months but I'm also 50

DwarfPlanetFiend · 15/11/2023 16:08

I do, however, do a test every couple of months because I definitely do not want another child and wouldn't want to find myself in a position where I was unable to abort.

ALongHardWinter · 15/11/2023 16:09

I had a Mirena from the age of 35 up until I was 55. I had periods when I had the first one but a few months after the second one (aged 40) I didn't have a period at all.

Wickeswench · 15/11/2023 16:09

I got pregnant with a Mirena Coil in place...

Nandocushion · 15/11/2023 16:13

Fourth Mirena, no periods/PMT etc at all bar a few months of spotting with the first and a few weeks with each subsequent.

Dinoswearunderpants · 15/11/2023 16:15

I got pregnant with a Mirena Coil in place...

And that's what I'm worried about.

I feel so conflicted as I always wanted two children but I've finally made my peace having one so if this is the case, it will be a very big shock!

My 3rd DC is nearly 7 now. I'm still in shock!

MoaningMolly · 15/11/2023 16:32

How long have you had the coil? It can take a while to stop periods. Mine are pretty random.
