To ask about decent vegetarian mince?!

Quorn mince is now awful! What happened to it?

I was vegetarian 20 years ago and Quorn mince was great back then.

After a brief stint eating meat again I’ve returned to being veggie. No issues cooking, thinking of recipes, using lentils don’t reply on meat replacement products.

But every now and again I’d like to make spag bol with veggie mince rather than lentils. Quorn has changed! It’s now like cheap TVP! Spongey, somehow, doesn’t absorb flavours etc.

Any recommendations? TIA!

I use puy lentils and chickpeas, liquidised, as a mince substitute in bolognese.

I had veggie bolognaise made with seitan once and I thought it was a very good substitute. I’m not vegetarian.

I also use puy or green lentils as a substitute for mince.

Crabwoman · 15/11/2023 06:15

I've not found one. I use Finely diced mushrooms

Adamfromgirls · 15/11/2023 06:19

My kids really like Vivera plant mince and having tried a few it’s the best of the the lot. As others have said lentils and chopped mushrooms are lovely but sometimes that doesn’t cut the mustard for my lot.

fitnessmummy · 15/11/2023 06:20

Depending on what you are using it for, apparently it's nicer if you soak it over night. For example if you wanted to make spaghetti bolognese you could soak it in herbs and tomato's over night.

Giggorata · 15/11/2023 06:23

Never found one.
I use lentils, with plenty of finely chopped onions, mushrooms and celery.

Richmond meat free mince is the best. I be tried them all.

disappointed101 · 15/11/2023 06:41

I like Linda McCartney

I haven't made it yet but I'm going to try this!

I recently went round to dinner with a vegetarian friend who made some vegan “meatballs” using mince from the ‘No Meat Company’. They were absolutely delicious, so good I’m planning to try it myself at home, although I’m not veggie.

Vinorosso74 · 15/11/2023 06:52

Vivera plant mince is the one I use. Texture and flavour both good for bolognese.

rubyslippers · 15/11/2023 06:54

Meatless farms mince is nicer than quorn
or use caviar lentils instead
Quorn has definitely changed

Anon2600 · 15/11/2023 06:55

Meatless Farm mince I’ve found to be the best - their website has great recipe ideas too !

Growingupinthe80s · 15/11/2023 06:56

Put some tofu in a blender and then season how you like it.

madeinmanc · 15/11/2023 07:00

That's a shame, I've not had it in years but Quorn mince used to be really good! I had been considering batch cooking some traditional meals like spaghetti Bolognese so thanks for the heads up.

DoubleTime · 15/11/2023 07:03

I like Holland and Barrett Soya Mince, or make my own using brown lentils and onion

Intermittentgasping · 15/11/2023 07:04

Clear spring organic soya mince

withoutjeans · 15/11/2023 07:04

Is quite NICE sorry . Half asleep still....

Cheeesus · 15/11/2023 07:07

I don’t mind this TVP one, but we have it with lots of lentils and other distractions (tiny cubes of carrot, celery and onion).

I like the Asda own brand of veggie mince. Much nicer than Quorn.

Saisong · 15/11/2023 07:26

We get the Sainsbos range one (not the quorn or Linda brand). It's much nicer than the quorn one anyway, which is definitely grittier and chewier.
Morrisons used to do an acceptable one too, but I haven't shopped there in a while so not sure if they still do.
