Toying with the idea of getting DD's a throw each for Christmas. They're attic room bedrooms are getting chilly.

Any advice?

My son bought me one last winter. It’s lovely, very cosy, variable heat settings and after 90 mins of use it auto reduces the heat to a low setting.

I feel bad that I don’t love it. The big downside is that it’s so cosy I end up falling asleep in front of the tv. It makes me reluctant to get up and move . I actually prefer my ankle length fake oodie. I now used the heated throw to warm my bed for an hour before I get in and then remove it.

Sensibleandboring · 13/11/2023 22:35

Yes, an electric fleece it’s a game changer! Barely put the heating on. £50 or £60 from Argos. Over the knees when wfh, bliss

RusemaneGanche · 13/11/2023 22:36

Yep. DH got me one out of Costco about 3 yrs ago. It's brilliant. Only trouble is, DC loves it too. We'd fight over it, so MIL got DC one for Xmas a couple of years ago, from Dunelm I think. We wouldn't be without them now.

They have varying levels of heat and shut off automatically after 3hrs.

Just ensure you get one that is from a reputable retailer and has the UKCA mark. Ie. don't buy one from Wish!

I've just checked the Lidl one I mentioned above. It's £25 for a silent night throw (RRP £40) with 9 temperature settings but it only has a 2 hour auto shut off. My one from Argos has 6 temperature settings and a 1, 3 and 5 hour timer.

sequin2000 · 13/11/2023 23:02

Best thing I ever bought but bought a cheap one first that started to smoulder. Then a silent night but blanket is quite thin. Finally a herringbone Dreamland. Expensive but worth every penny. The blanket is warm so I don't need to turn it on every night and it's sometimes too warm. Love it

CoffeeBeansGalore · 13/11/2023 23:06

Dh recently bought me the Dreamland one from Costco. Currently £79 online. Not sure how much in warehouse though.
Timer & 6 heat settings. Very cosy.

Be v careful with them around kids to make sure they turn them off - a family members child left hers on to be warm for after school and burned the attic down!

sephiroth23 · 13/11/2023 23:15

Although as an adult I adore mine, I'm on it right now Grin I have it on for 10 mins while I brush my teeth etc and then the sheet and covers are toasty. With this and our Oodies we only had the heating on for a week last year! Grin

waterless · 13/11/2023 23:15

I've had some from VonHaus. The first one stopped working after being washed. It did say on the instructions to put it in a net bag, which we forgot to do, so it was probably for that reason that it broke. The second one however broke despite not being washed or misused which was disappointing. I've got a Breuer one which was good but I bought it abroad so can't plug it in here!!

junbean · 13/11/2023 23:19

I have one and it makes a big difference. Make sure you put it underneath so the heat stays trapped. Korean heated blankets are the absolute best if you can find one. Amazon finds are ok too.

MrShady · 13/11/2023 23:37

Mine is a dreamland one I think and a good few years old. Definitely worth it
I have a medication I take weekly that gives me flu symptoms (shivery with cold/bone pain etc) and it's amazing for that

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 13/11/2023 23:39

I’ve just bought one as a gift and am having second thoughts as the recipient has two cats that like to lie on her lap. I’m sure they’ll love the heated throw too but is there any danger of it overheating with two furry bodies on it? Also, are their claws likely to puncture the wires?

Never had any issues, I do shove mine off if he kneads as he's quite violent Grin but mostly he just snores away hogging it

BarbDwyerHair · 14/11/2023 01:51

My Dreamland one stopped working after washing and Dreamland were hopeless about it. Buy from somewhere with good return policy.

Anothernewmum1 · 14/11/2023 02:18

Mine is my favourite thing in the world! We have one in the lounge and one in the bedroom.
Also if you wanted to push the boat out there’s a heated cushion called ‘stoov’ which is also fabulous if you have cold bones like me.

I've got two cats. It's about being responsible when using it, I never leave mine unattended and always turn it off at the wall when I'm not using it.

amusedbush · 14/11/2023 11:54

I got mine from Aldi three years ago, I think it was £35. I know their stock is unpredictable but it seems to come back in every year, so I'd recommend grabbing one if you see it. The dog goes nuts when he sees me bring it out; he would happily snooze on it from morning until night if I let him Grin

Thankfully I can disconnect the lead and put it in the washing machine when it starts to smell like him!

Andante57 · 14/11/2023 12:06

I have an electric hot water bottle. I don’t know how I survived without it.

Yikes Shock

If you get one from a reputable store/brand with an auto shut off, this won’t happen.

katseyes7 · 14/11/2023 18:37

My best friend bought me one last year, and it's wonderful. I still haven't had the fire on in the room l'm in (I only heat the room l'm using, not the whole house) yet, l've been snuggled up under this thing.
It's bright pink, it has eight heat settings, if you have it on high, it gradually reduces the temperature, but you can turn it back up if you need to.
It's quite big, so it covers you nicely, and so cosy! I'd highly recommend one.
I'm sure it saved me a fortune on heating last year, and it's incredibly cheap to run.
One of the best presents ever, for me.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 14/11/2023 18:40

Love me my Lakeland heated throw. Treated myself at Christmas a couple of years ago and wouldn't be without it.

Patchw0rk · 15/11/2023 16:44

What's the difference between a throw and a blanket then?!

I have this Dreamland one which was £80 from Very. It's called a throw but it's like a big soft heavy-ish blanket to me!

NotStartedChristmasShoppingYet · 15/11/2023 18:46

@waterless could you not just buy a U.K. /worldwide travel adapter?

roses2 · 21/11/2024 08:28

I'm looking to buy an electric throw to put on my lap when working form home and sometimes sit on the sofa with the kids. What size do I want??

Widths seem to vary from 130cm to 180cm.
