Did Covid mess up your cycle?

bethhop85 · 11/11/2023 21:52

I know I need to book an appointment with my GP but I was just wondering whether anybody else has had issues with their period since recovering from Covid?

I had Covid in early September and both my cycles since then have been weird. I had an incredibly heavy period soon after testing positive and since then, I have had light bleeding every day between ovulation and the first day of my period.

Has anybody else experienced this? How long did it take to settle down again?

The last time I had Covid my ovulation was delayed by two weeks but I then got pregnant so can't say how it affected the rest of it 😂

MenAndWomenOfYore · 11/11/2023 22:14

Getting vaccinated did, so it's reasonable to assume the reverse is true?

JustKeepSlimming · 11/11/2023 22:16

Yes, I've had Covid a couple of times, and both times my cycle was out of whack for a couple of months. Same when I got the vaccine.

My 1st vaccine did seem to make my period come over a week later than normal.
I caught covid a month ago for the very 1st time, and got my period in the 2nd week. On time, as always and no different to normal.

truetruebarneymcgrew · 11/11/2023 22:53

Not for me, but maybe it's because all three times I've had covid, I've been on my period, I swear I can guarantee if I'm going to be ill, I'll be on my period and already feeling like shite, I guess feeling like mega shite, is better than feeling mildly shite twice in a month!

CantFindTheBeat · 11/11/2023 22:57

Like a PP, the vaccine messed up my 'cycle' , in that I hadn't had a period in two years (menopause) and I had an incredibly heavy bleed after both vaccines*

So assume that Covid itself could do the same?

  • had a referral for post-menopausal bleeding tests and all was fine.

The vaccine did that to me too. A lot of women reported it as a side effect and were ignored. I believe Katherine Ryan did a few instagram stories about women being ignored in medical settings.

Jonahseyebrows · 11/11/2023 23:09

Huh. I had covid for the first time a few months ago and had the most horrific heavy period after I tested positive. I've had heavy periods most of my life but this was something else. Maybe it was covid to blame?

mynameiscalypso · 11/11/2023 23:16

Any illness seems to make my cycle go mad these days. I had an eye infection in the summer and it totally messed up my cycle and took a couple of months to return to normal. I blame getting older

PatChaunceysFruitCake · 11/11/2023 23:18

Interesting, DD is 11. She started her periods at 9 and they are regular to within a few days. She had covid in September and her period started only 14 days after the last one.

Reading this thread has made me wonder if covid could be responsible. She's just come on again after 30 days so hopefully getting back to normal.

AbbeyGailsParty · 11/11/2023 23:21

During the first two waves of Covid in 2020 this was heavily reported on the Zoe app. Get checked out by your GP anyway but I remember it being quite a big thing reported in the early days of Covid.

bethhop85 · 11/11/2023 23:33

Thanks for the helpful replies 🙂

@Jonahseyebrows , this what exactly what I experienced! It was the heaviest period I’ve ever had and was just after I tested positive. My periods have been disrupted since then (it’s now 8 weeks since I had Covid).

@PaperSn0wAGhOst , thanks - I will look that up! I was thinking that myself. I’m sure there would be far more research into the effects of Covid on menstruation if men were affected… 🙄

I had long covid, and tracked my symptoms on my period tracker for 14 months.

My fatigue days aligned exactly with ovulation and my period.

Saffrom · 12/11/2023 00:40

Hm. I can’t remember exactly what happened but I do remember thinking huh my cycle is so weird I wonder if it’s cos of having covid.

I think it settled back to normal in 3 months.

Creepyrosemary · 12/11/2023 04:53

No, not at all but I have heard others conplain about it. It is a thing, yes.

Camembertcufflinks · 12/11/2023 08:06

Yes and I believe it's triggered early peri menopause in my case. My periods have not been the same since I had the first vaccine, and I had a sudden onset of night sweats, brain fog, anxiety and itching etc after that dose. I'm 'too young' according to the accepted age range for peri but I'm pretty sure it's what's happening to me. It makes me angry that this has been brushed under the carpet the way it has (even with the so called studies) as I have heard of a lot of women in a similar position.

SnowLikeRain · 12/11/2023 08:25

I don't have regular periods since going on the pill 10 years ago. Maybe a heavyish one every 6 months or so with a couple of random spotting days in between.

I had one, then had the flu jab 5 days later and about a week after got, what I presume was, Covid. The following day I had a massive period again, so two weeks after my actual period. I was wondering if excessive coughing can trigger it as crazy as that sounds. Or if I should be concerned and book an appointment? Maybe not if it's a known thing.

Never had Covid before, and didn't have an issue with any of the vaccines.

JustKeepSlimming · 12/11/2023 10:11

@SnowLikeRain when did all this happen? Have you gone back to normal since? You could always give your GP a ring for advice, or talk to a pharmacist.

ThisUsernameIsNotAvailablePlsTryAnother · 12/11/2023 10:26

My periods have completely changed since having the Covid vaccine too. Much shorter and lighter, whereas I was always regular as clockwork and had a more normal flow before.

It makes me so angry that it's been brushed aside, I had just started TTC and I've basically given up on that now 😔

SnowLikeRain · 12/11/2023 10:34

@JustKeepSlimming a few weeks ago. So I won't know for at least half a year. Had random strong pains today though 🤷‍♀️

Dacadactyl · 12/11/2023 10:43

No my cycle wasn't messed up when I had covid or afterwards. I have also not been vaccinated.

However, 2 of my vaccinated co-workers experienced mad issues with their periods after having the vaccine.

DumpedByText · 12/11/2023 10:56

My DD then 15 periods stopped for 4 months after her covid jab. Then they were so heavy and long she's had to go on the pill.

They've never gone back to normal and I've not let her have anymore Covid vaccination.

LeNil · 12/11/2023 10:59

Yes, I had a ‘doublé period after the second vaccine and after my 3rd Covid infection. I thought I was starting the peri menopause but things did go back to normal with maybe slightly heavier periods.
i did read an article fairly early on about the lack of research on vaccinations and menstruel cycles. It pointed out that most vaccinations are given before they can affect cycles, and that it’s something that really needs to be taken into consideration.

Similar happened to me. Had Covid back in January/February. It completely messed up my cycle and I now have a beautiful 5 week old daughter 😂
