Uni and foreign students would you say anything?

My DD is at uni doing a creative subject and basically she is having to help and support all of the foreign students with their work.

The uni have taken on so so many students who don't speak English over 60% of her course and put no translators in place, so my DD is having to help explain everything to those poor students who have broken English at best.

The uni has literally just taken all the money, it's making my DD course really dumbed down and keeping her back, it's not great for the foreign students as they are pretty out of their depth and miserable.

From my stance we are paying a shit ton for this course, and its teaching is poor and the overall experience is a bit shit.

All of these students will leave after 3 years, and take this education to their countries which is great but it leaves the UK students with a sub standard experience and shitty degree.

Should there be a limits on how many students can be from overseas? Should the uni have to provide interpreters? Is anyone else's kids in the same situation?

We are considering moving her from the uni on these grounds as she spends more time helping her peers than she does being taught.

@HoppingPavlova
Indeed, US universities tend to have whopping endowments and most, whether state or private, have had full time staff working on fundraising for decades. It's only recently that Oxford and Cambridge colleges have decided to combine their efforts and take fundraising as seriously as US universities do. Even piddling universities and colleges in the US have more money stockpiled than the vast majority of British universities. That is a huge problem.

How is your DD getting on now @thebraispink ? I’ve been thinking of her and wondering if there has been any changes, improvements? Did she say anything?

My DD would like to go to the university. It makes financial sense for us as we live in London and would struggle to find the parental maintenance costs for her to live away from home at a university elsewhere. And it makes educational sense due to the institutions reputation. But, I’d be interested to know if your DD would make the same choice again or have any advice.

Hello, I'm a name changer and DD has applied and been accepted this coming September, she's coming to a uni closer to home and going to live back at home.

It was really sub standard and only going overtures bit better, so we sat around and made a hard choice to move, we are all excited for the move the new uni seems way better great engaged tutors and a good balance of students and i think the London credentials aren't worth the extra cost and have sold out.

Sorry that meant to say "not going to get better"

hothotheatbag · 25/02/2024 19:28

And sorry to keep adding but yes we did raise the issue and we're fobbed off and in essential told to shut up or put up.

It's the way of the world at the unis and it seems the emphasis is/ was on us to review and work out the demographic of the students and make our decision.

Even though the uni doesn't publish any figures on the percentage of non English speaking students. So quite how we are supposed to know!

I’m glad your dd has made a decision that she is excited about. I wish her well.

As for my DD it’s good she goes into these things with her eyes open.

I haven't read all of the posts but I mean this kindly . Your daughter needs to look after No 1 and focus on her own work . She is not there to prop up these students as it's not her responsibility. I would change to another Uni after checking it out .
