When did you last have a pay rise in the private sector?

TWETMIRF · 11/11/2023 10:44

I have been on the same hourly rate since 2017 and wondered how normal this was within the private sector. Minimum wage creeps ever closer to what I'm earning and I think things will only change when it's forced by NMW becoming more than I get paid. I work in accounts and have 2 jobs paying the same hourly rate. The second job I started in 2021.

I work in finance and we get a salary review every July. Increases depend on various scenarios, our HQ is in Germany and often it's their inflation figures who drive the increase.

snoozylulu · 11/11/2023 10:49

We usually get an adjustment in April, but I was promoted in June so got a bigger bump then. Last year they adjusted me in April and then very kindly decided to give me a bit more in July.

LizzoBorden · 11/11/2023 10:51

6% in September, along with everyone else in the business.

My firm gave everyone a 5% pay rise this year - despite hiking clients fees by 10% “in line with inflation” 🙃

Before that I only got payrises from promotions.

I work in accountancy though and salaries have really stagnated over the last few years.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 11/11/2023 11:08

Annually other than in 2020

Beezknees · 11/11/2023 11:13

I've only recently joined the company but we're getting a 6% rise in January, brought forward from April due to the COL. It's a major company though and they've made massive profits this year, I'm sure people can guess which sector.

Burnamer · 11/11/2023 11:15

Professional services - every January and there would be uproar if not

Saz12 · 11/11/2023 11:15

Everyone in my workplace got 0.75% (ie bugger all) this year, nothing last year, and 0.25% the year before that. We have very low rates of staff turnover so I guess theres no need for them to splash out on actually meaningful raises.

HelpMeGetThrough · 11/11/2023 11:28

We get one every year. 4% this year.

Makes you feel a bit shit when you find out the executive team have awarded themselves 20%, especially as that gives the CEO a rise of £188,000 oh and bonuses on top.

Blanketpolicy · 11/11/2023 11:29

It probably depends on the company. I work for a large multinational so there is a global annual performance and pay review process every year (non union, the union seem to negotiate 2-3 year deals at a time).

Increases will be based around country inflation rates, company performance, and personal performance. I have been there for 12 years and as part of the annual review we usually get 2-3%, 2 years of covid was 0%, this year was 3-7%

Promotions, increases due to changing job internally, roles being reassesed, or going up bands are more significant rises, less frequent and usually happen outside the pay review cycle.

OooPourUsACupLove · 11/11/2023 11:38

Annual reviews, but they've already told us my grade and above won't get any increase this year.

Karatema · 11/11/2023 11:40

I haven't had a pay rise since 2016 and I'm a boss. My staff have one every year!
Ask your boss. Mine remind me if I don't say 🤣

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 11/11/2023 11:40

Every year for the last 3 years. They've also just announced the next two year deal.

Since 2020 my pay has risen 15%

Barleysugar86 · 11/11/2023 11:43

April this year. COL for everyone by 2% I think and then I had an extra £2k increase on top. They are a good company though. I'm in the lower earners and they gave us £500 COL bonus payment to the lowest earning third of the company last year as well, even the part timers. I am very grateful to them in lots of ways.

KnittedCardi · 11/11/2023 11:56

The ones I know of seem to have had a mixture of pay rises and additional lump sums for COL. They all operate performance pay rises and bonuses too, so not everyone gets the same.

TheUltima · 11/11/2023 12:03

I’ve had 13% over 18 months, and then an additional 5% exceptional increase due to a change of responsibilities. I got a promotion just before the 13% so if you include that increase it’s been a good couple of years for me 🙂

DeathStarCanteenGal · 11/11/2023 12:06

2pay rises last year - 3% all round in spring then 6% later in the year when COL pressures were really ramping up
And then 6% in October this year

DustyLee123 · 11/11/2023 12:07

I had one recently, and got back pay to April.

Girasoli · 11/11/2023 12:24

Last Spring - hopefully we'll get another one this Spring.

Saverage · 11/11/2023 13:25

2 years without. Had a CoL lump sum last year though.

JaneKatSuttonGoals · 11/11/2023 13:28

Oct 22 brought forward due to COL, due next one in Jan but have changed jobs this year so had a mid year increase.

lljkk · 11/11/2023 13:30

I'm surprised for OP. I thought rises in private sector were almost always annual. In public sector... don't get me started. We'd be delighted to actually beat inflation for once, too.

TWETMIRF · 11/11/2023 13:32

Both employers are very small, one limited company with 6 employees and the other a sole trader with 2 part time staff. I'm AAT level 4 and on £12 ph. Also in Cornwall which doesn't help as in a deprived area

OP posts:
Overthebow · 11/11/2023 13:36

Annually, last year was 8% and not had this years announced yet. There’s opportunities for more throughout the year depending on performance too. Have you asked for one op?

MrsApplepants · 11/11/2023 13:39

Annual pay reviews this year I got a 15% rise and my full 10% bonus. I’ve performed well and they are a great company that values their staff
