Have you been blonde and brunette? Which did you prefer?

I’ve been trying to get my perfect shade of blonde and it’s impossible and I’m sick of paying £300 to end up with yellow hair.

I’m tempted to go back to brunette but it’s taken so much time, money and a good few inches gone.

Yes. Brown hair just washed me out due to my colouring, too blonde just looked stupid as well, so now I aim for a dark golden blonde and it works.

What's your natural colour?

Bluevelvetsofa · 09/11/2023 20:33

I’m naturally blonde, but had a wonderful hairdresser who persuaded me to go darker. It was brunette with auburn tones and I loved it. He was so talented and it always looked shiny and swishy. He and I were the only ones who liked it though. DH grew a beard at the same time and we made a deal that I’d go back to blonde if he shaved the loathsome beard. Then it became blonde with reddish lights with a different hairdresser ( we moved) and now it’s very blonde with a third hairdresser (second moved).

HappierTimesAhead · 09/11/2023 20:38

I prefer blonde but I have realised that I just suit being blonde more than brunette. I think it suits my colouring better. Is your blonde too brassy? Could you go for some cooler tones?

Blonde suits me much more, it just totally lifts my face.

However I've been brunette for a while now, due to the cost of staying blonde!

Hibernatalie · 09/11/2023 20:44

I have had black hair to platinum blonde and everything in between! I am sticking to brunette now because it's easier, it suits me, it feels healthier. I think my favourite was a nice dark honey blonde with caramel tones. But dark brown is a close second.

DollyTubb · 09/11/2023 20:45

I had fabulous dark brunette hair when I was younger (yes, modest I know!) But as I've got older my hair has got lighter and it's now 'bronde'/golden brown with streaks. It's nice and suits my colouring (and hides the grey better) which does change as you get older; but I do miss my lovely glossy natural dark brunette locks!

Beezknees · 09/11/2023 20:45

Been both and dark brunette suits me much better. My colouring is similar to Liv Tyler. Don't know why I ever attempted blonde.

IHeartKingThistle · 09/11/2023 20:45

I've been both. Turns out copper is my colour!

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 09/11/2023 20:46

I’m a natural blonde but I have been brunette in the past. Everyone said it was nice but then after I’d gone back to blonde a few people admitted to me that I looked rather like I’d died the previous winter with dark hair Blush

I do think anecdotally I was taken more seriously as a brunette.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 09/11/2023 20:46

Have naturally dark black hair very straight but it is a pain in the arse now with greys growing through so fast, lots of people my age mid 50's go blonde due to easier to blend in grey with blonde but it never appealed to me and maybe I need to try on a blonde wig first to see how I would look with my skin. Wish I could shave it all off but think I would be committed. Have a younger niece who was so blonde and it was lovely but she went dark in early 20's and has never gone back to blonde.

Lovemusic82 · 09/11/2023 20:48

I have been both, naturally brunette but prefer blonde as it hides my greys better and I don’t have to dye it as often. I also have very pale skin so brunette makes me look like death.

See I'm also very pale and blonde makes me look sallow!

MissGroves · 09/11/2023 20:51

Yes, naturally strawberry blonde but long to be brunette. Dyed my hair as a teen was a disaster! I stillblook enviously at brunette hair but have accepted I will stay this colour now until I go white!

DonPeggyJoan · 09/11/2023 20:52

Have you tried different hairdressers? A good colour technician should be able to do a shade of blonde or brown that works well for your skin tone.

Stringagal · 09/11/2023 20:53

I’m mousy brown but haven’t had my natural colour for years, decades. I do prefer being blonde but usually go darker over winter so I don’t need to colour it as often. I’m itching to go a bit grey so I get an ashier blonde and lighter roots!

Mumaway · 09/11/2023 20:57

Childhood natural blonde then mousey as got older. Highlights 15-28, then dark brunette with fringe. I loved it, so shiny and made me feel bold! The fringe was super high maintenance though, and when I started to go grey in early 30s I hated the roots, so went back to natural plus natural white highlights, which I love the best

£300 is a lot. I pay £85 for mine with a trim and style too. My hair naturally wants to be warm but I use products specifically for light blonde hair to get rid of the warmth that regularly tries to push through. My stylist also uses a toner with my colour which seems to help.

Baffledandalarmed · 09/11/2023 21:05

I’ve been both.

Natural is a gingery/brown (red in the summer as the sun seems to dye it).

Most women look better with natural hair as IMO most fake blondes look awful and within a week you can usually see roots! Same with fake brunettes…but it’s just more obvious with fake blondes.

People are beautiful the way they are and shouldn’t feel the need to change their hair 😀

I’ve had three (and multiple consultations)

First attempt he fucked up my hair massively, he didn’t even take an after photo as he knew it was so terrible.

Second, she was good but expensive. Then she started charging me £90 for toner that lasted one wash and kept telling me I needed to go darker to get lighter? She then did a root melt and it became brassy and needed lifting.

Third one, really sweet girl and so cheap, I’d go to her for maintenance but not the transformation.

Its been 18 months and I’m fed up of brassy hair (I use purple and blue shampoo and toner at home and it still looks shit).

I'm naturally brunette, went blonde for around 8 years then got sick of it and went back dark and absolutely love it

GeneCity · 09/11/2023 21:08

I've had bleached blonde hair - I quite liked it sometimes, but overall it was a massive PITA. The chemicals, the time, the money. What a waste of everything.

Nah, I think it’s fun to change your hair colour. It doesn’t need to be that deep as “accepting the real you”

I am not blonde but I prefer the rich chestnut brown to my own ryvita coloured hair. I know which is more beautiful!! 😍 it"s a bit of 6.3
(I don't know the number actually, that was a joke).

its not about accepting the real you…more accepting that spending £300 is a waste of money and given skin complexions etc most people look better natural.

You could literally fly to NY on that. Or do a long weekend in any city in the UK. You can do a week in Cornwall off season in a nice one person cottage. Christ - you could pay mortgage for a month (feel free if you are down for wasting £300) :D! Why waste it on your hair when your roots show within a week?!

Quite the assumption that she doesn’t do those things as well.

Presumably she spends on her hair because she wants to, and can afford it. Does there need to be any other reason?
