I have put a spare, electric blanket on top of my sofa cushions, throw over the top tucking it in and also have my electric throw over me. Currently sat here in my little, heated cocoon marvelling at my own genius. In your face British gas, I won't be freezing my toes off this year, pahahahaha 🤣🤣🤣

No real point to this thread, just thought I'd share to inspire others.

When iw as a kid my bed was against the radiator, so I would tuck the edge of the duvet in it and make a heated tent type contraption 😆

Irritatedandfedupandsad · 10/11/2023 00:46

My adorable JRT keeps me warm wherever I am . She is now under my duvet and am feeling warm and loved 🥰 She definitely wants me to switch the light off now ,good night 😴

I assume it’s an autocorrect on flatmate.

And Americans call cutlery “silverware” not flatware.

Mossstitch · 10/11/2023 00:49

All this talk of renewable energy and reducing fossil fuels, the government is missing a trick...........they need to find a way of harnessing the heat from all the menopausal women 😜

Autiebibliophile · 10/11/2023 04:21

Put your coat and shoes on the radiator in the morning before you leave.

And me. Still, they're keeping the gas bill down #everycloud

Me too. As someone who was permanently cold unless it was high summer up until a couple of years ago, its been a revelation.

But since when did hot flushes become hot flashes?

We couldn't do what the OP does because we'd never be able to get near a heated sofa because cats. It might be the one thing they'd like even more than cardboard boxes.

Last winter we bought jersey fitted sheets (very cheap from Amazon) because our MN approved high thread count ones were cold when we got in bed, but these are much better. I might splash out on matching duvet covers before it gets proper cold this year.

A luxury tip is putting the hair dryer nozzle under your duvet before getting in to bed. So toasty.

Oh yes! Done that!
but it can overheat and cut out.
A Whippet ( clean feet and bottom) is also a bed warmer.
They run hotter than a human by a couple of degrees and are cozy.

There's an expiry date on hot water bottles?😮 I've got one that's over 30 years old, still going strong.

Sorry to be a downer@mrswhiplington but please treat yourself to a new hot water bottle!

A lovely friend of mine ended up with some pretty severe burns on her groin/thighs after an old hot water bottle burst. The trouble is they seem to be "going strong" until the point they spilt - and that could be when you're wrapped around it keeping warm!

I think the working life is about 2 years (maybe 3) from purchase. Modern bottles should have their manufacture date stamped into them (like a little flower with a year date in the middle, and dots in the number of "petals" that corresponds to the month).

CrochetedOwl · 10/11/2023 07:31

I had an old water bottle and it burst in the night with lukewarm water and I woke up thinking I had wet myself 🙈
Check your water bottles people!

No one’s gloomy or complaining while the flatware’s entertaining

Hope this is getting the recognition it deserves 😂

QuickDraining · 10/11/2023 14:56

Regarding hot water bottles, I think that's the main reason you shouldn't put boiling water in them. Because if they do break for whatever reason it can be horrible.

I had two go in quick succession, didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to them expiring.

NotSoLittle · 10/11/2023 21:24

I put this in the bed for a while before I get in.

Yes, I only found this out last year on This Morning.

https://capt.org.uk/faq-items/do-hot-water-bottles-expire/

That's incredible! That must be a record.
I have had them perish after about 3 years.
Hand cream is especially bad for them..I put hand cream on at night, and the oils from that {Body shop hemp hand cream} or Atrixo [?] in past caused the rubber to break down and the bottle to leak.

I wonder if modern bottles aren't as good as vintage ones.
I had one as a child shaped like a cat..loved it.

Oblomov23 · 16/11/2023 03:54

Put our electric blanket on an hour before going to bed. Jumping into bed that is warm from an electric blanket is one of life's joys. We've got our heavy winter duvet cover on, it's thick, soft almost got a tiny bit of fleece in it. M&S. Even Dh said god that's good!

CUDet · 16/11/2023 06:50

Ooh I need brushed cotton bed sheets, my bed is so cold. What sets do people recommend?

sashh · 16/11/2023 08:09

Fbshe · 09/11/2023 20:41

I normally have the heating on constantly but I’m now living alone for the first winter and in a new house so I’m worried about bills. Are electric blankets/throws a lot cheaper? I keep considering buying one of each for on the sofa and in bed. I’ve not had the heating on yet but spend all of my time in bed with two hot water bottles.

Yes, I have two (throws) one in each room I use most, I now warm the person (me) rather than the room.

Although the throws are made to be used when you are awake it can be left on overnight on a low setting.

On my bed I have a duvet and then a sort of thinner cover which has made a huge difference to keeping me warm.

Yes, nothing is made to last these days.

My parents house was build in the 1970s and their sinks, bath, taps, everything was such good quality and didn't need replacing for 40 years and could have lasted longer.
