Looking for a candle that actually smells of something!

Not talking Jo Malone type prices!

When I smell candles in the shops they smell lovely but when lit, they aren’t emitting any such smell at all!!

Any recommendations?

Bath and Bodyworks candles are what you want. 3 wicks and amazing smells. I buy online but some Next shops have small pop up shops in them to have a sniff or two.

Halsall · 08/11/2023 12:01

Do you have a Muji anywhere near you? If not, you can buy online, but it’s helpful to go into a shop to sniff their candles in a tin. I personally like their ‘log fire’ one but they do lots. They have a nice, subtle but very definite scent. Not horrendously expensive either.

I've always found Morrison's own scented candles to be smelly. In fact, I stopped buying them because the fragrance was too overpowering for my small flat!

I think you generally get what you pay for with scents but Yankee candles are pretty pungent and usually in supermarkets or try something with several wicks or in a larger size.

I've started buying fragrance free candles, I like having them lit but can't bear the cloying fragrance throughout the house. I found I kept having to blow them out because it was getting too much and god knows what you're really breathing in with cheaper synthetic scents.

The White Company do lovely candles - I especially like the Pomegranate one. They're not cheap though.

Aldi do a decent copy and their Lime, Basil & Mandarin one is really nice. They've also introduced a rang of eco candles in attractive green glass holders. The Amber & Patchoulli is one of my faves.

Not helpful but the Christmas tree farm next to me sells their own at Christmas and they are gorgeous. I stock up every year.

Whataretheodds · 08/11/2023 13:46

Muji.

I find Yankee candles to be overpowering

These are lovely thecandlerooms.com/collections/reading-room-candles

I think Lidl do some lovely scents, I usually get their reed diffusers over candles but they smell the same

MarshmallowsOnToast · 08/11/2023 13:55

Bath & Body Works are the best I've ever tried.

Some scenes can easily fill a whole small house.

(Although I've not tried the £50+ type ones)!

BaconAndAvocado · 08/11/2023 14:54

Thanks all.
I'm planning to go to Aldi tomorrow so will have a gander.
Love the look of the Bath and Bodywork's but they're too spendy .

DW Hom eWild Honey nectar smell divine, whether burning or just sitting in a room. if you love the smell of honey and beeswax. TK Maxx do them for just a few pounds for a huge candle.

Oh James are mid price but the votives are reasonable and they last.

Some St Eval and even some Muji candles hold their scent. The Muji ones especially are very good value.

bakebeans · 08/11/2023 16:35

@crimewatcher i was excited to try them but felt the smells were cheap smelling and too much like Yankee candles

piscofrisco · 08/11/2023 17:01

Villa Hermanosa at Homesense or online

Bananaman123 · 08/11/2023 17:04

Devon wick do lovely candles and I really love the wax mets in my electric wax burner. Sand and fog and some other brands from to maxx and of course Yankee candle.

LegendsBeyond · 08/11/2023 17:04

I think you get what you pay for. Some strong smelling candles have a nasty chemical smell. The White Company candles are good.

thaegumathteth · 08/11/2023 17:08

Woodwick crackling candles are the only ones I've found that are any use

Flump9 · 08/11/2023 17:09

Pacific wax co ones from asda, around £4 for a large jar candle and scent strong but not overbearing.

LeopardPJS · 08/11/2023 17:12

ST Eval! Handmade in Cornwall, they look and smell amazing, many of them come in ceramic moulds, I’ve been bought Diptique/ Jo Malone ones as gifts in the past but St Eval are so much nicer (and cheaper) ! Bay and Rosemary is my fave but they also do a great sea salty one

febbabies2023 · 08/11/2023 17:16

@BaconAndAvocado the aldi ones are the Jo Malone dupes and I loveeeeee the pomegranate ones! It actually smells. I also use the same Reed diffuser and I can smell it whenever I walk through the front door

I go through the candles so quickly though 😂 but at £3.49 or whatever it is, can't complain.

BitofaStramash · 08/11/2023 17:17

IKEA candles are cheap and smell lovely

muddyford · 08/11/2023 17:20

Lidl ones are good. Currently using a Cotton Fresh one and a Coastal Fresh one (of similar names). Not smoky.
