Made the mistake of watching the news with MIL

Iturnedmyfaceaway · 06/11/2023 21:34

My elderly mil (child of holocaust survivors) is visiting.
have been avoiding watching the news during her visit.
tonight though we were flicking through the channels and settled on bbc news with the very distressing reports from Gaza.

mil started ranting about the bbc bias, I said they weren’t biased, that pulled out the stopper and she kept talking…..

I left the room for a bit, came back, she talked a bit more, so I gave her a hug, changed channel. We’ll be fine tomorrow.

It sounds as if you handled it well OP.

In the throes of Rage and grief and triggered trauma isn’t the time to start judging people and coming over all objective and risking sounding superior.

Of course the situation in Gaza is beyond inhuman. Meanwhile Hamas have said that they will repeat the 7th Oct attacks again and again.

Some people are closer to the lived horror than others.

BrimfulOfMash · 07/11/2023 10:36

Look at this thread: people whose lives have never been threatened telling people how they OUGHT to feel.

You don’t know the personal circumstances/experiences of other posters.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 07/11/2023 10:58

Being the child of holocaust survivors means she has grown up with a generational trauma
its a big fucking deal
but she didn’t experience it herself

and it doesn’t take a genius to see that trauma from the past isn’t an excuse for bad behaviour in the present

I don’t want to argue with anyone as we all know it’s an edgy topic

im so angry with the IDF
their emotional and angry reaction is going to cause more harm , more pain and will fuck up
another generation

Thisisworsethananticpated · 07/11/2023 11:00

BrimfulOfMash

and this MIL- her life hasn’t been threatened
she’s safe in the UK

CornflakesOnTheSolesOfHerShoes · 07/11/2023 11:01

But she isn’t behaving badly! She just objected to the perspective of a news report.

StaunchMomma · 07/11/2023 11:05

PurpleChrayne · 06/11/2023 21:46

She is the CHILD... of HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS.

Think about that.

Think hard.

I would think that would come with a whole heap of empathy for the children of Gaza, in fairness.

I feel for your MIL - how painful this must be for her. She is right the BBC have been biased eg some of their local reporters praising the Hamas attacks and the assumption about the hospital bomb as well as what @asterel said about the Hamas actor.

Where has a BBC reporter praised the Hamas attacks? That is a very serious allegation and I do not believe it for a second.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 07/11/2023 11:16

Everyone is biased in this situation, there's no way not to be. Given her heritage, she has more right than most to be treated with gentleness, regardless of your opinion. Your continuing good relationship is more important to you both than this.

There are no easy answers to any of it.

I'm not sure that Obama is best suited to talking objectively.
In his last year in office the United States dropped over 25,000 bombs in 7 countries, including an airstrike on a hospital in Afghanistan.

@Findingmypurposeinlife and if you watch the clip, he talks about how no one is blameless. If you approach the conflict trying to work out who is the goodie and who is the baddie, you will never work it out.

Not defending everything Obama ever did, but I don't think 'nah-nah, your administration was involved in war' is a reason not to consider what he says.

I disagree. America's arms trade is worth more than $70 billion a year. The Obama administration brokered more weapons sales than any other administration since World War 2 which is staggering, considering the USA hasn't actually been invaded in over 80 years but has invaded over 80 other countries!
This isn't about 'goodie and baddies'. I simply believe these facts impair Obama's (and other Presidents) ability to give objective, unbiased opinions.

Please read a history book.

Which one? You think history books are unbiased?

CatMadam · 07/11/2023 17:07

@Wimpeyspread Any book about the formation of Israel and what it actually entailed- including the horrors of the nakba and ensuing persecution of Palestinians on their own land.

Comedycook · 07/11/2023 17:11

You shouldn't have said anything. Sometimes it's best to just nod along. That was one of those times.

Comedycook · 07/11/2023 17:18

It's also worth remembering that The Holocaust has left many with generational trauma even if they themselves weren't directly affected.

Littlehouseinthebigwoods8 · 07/11/2023 17:20

Jews in the UK are terrified right now. And they have every reason to be. Anti-semitic attacks have increased astronomically since the Hamas attacks and my own Jewish friends have told me that for the first time they feel afraid in L. The BBC reporting has received a LOT of criticism from other mainstream media sources and I do believe its reporting is responsible for much of the violence against Jewish people in recent weeks.

Littlehouseinthebigwoods8 · 07/11/2023 17:22

The BBC has long had a reputation for anti-semitism. Do you remember when Muslims were attacking a bus of Jewish people in the UK? They reported that a Jewish person could be heard uttering something Islamophic in response. This was proved to have absolutely no grounds. Pure fabrication because they couldn't bring themselves to acknowledge the problem of anti-semitism within parts of the Muslim community.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 07/11/2023 17:23

Jews in the UK are terrified right now

of course they must be
and the first event must have deeply traumatised them

and I can’t see this improving whilst Gaza is blasted to dust

as with each day that IDF continue the pot bubbles

Thisisworsethananticpated · 07/11/2023 17:25

But this has got fuck all to do with the BBC

any anger and violence prone antisemitics arnt watching the BBC to be honest
social media is fuelling it

It wasn't just the first event. It's people going out in droves, on our own streets, to support an organisation that wants to kill all Jews. It's our own police force supporting such terrorist-apologists and even joining in with Jihadic chants. It's Jewish school children being attacked in theit uniforms and told to stay home. It's Jewish businesses being vandalised. Jews aren't safe in their own country and the police and the media are actively re-enforcing their fears.

Littlehouseinthebigwoods8 · 07/11/2023 17:34

The BBC won't even call a group who straps suicide vests to children and murders babies and grandmothers terrorists for goodness sake. Why? If Hamas targeted anyone other than Jews, they would call the terrorists. It's because "Jews don't count".

Sigh…. wanting innocent civilians in Gaza to stop being slaughtered does not mean supporting Hamas. How many times does that have to be explained?!

I live in London. I've seen these protests.

You are seriously underestimating the problem of anti-semitism among a very large number of these protestors. Not all of them, of course! But the fact that even a significant minority are chanting "from the river to the sea" is naturally terrifying to Jews.
