My ds is turning 13 later this month and I am just asking for some age appropriate book recommendations please.

Can you list some books that she's enjoyed previously?

BibbleandSqwauk · 06/11/2023 17:53

That is a bit vague. Does she like fantasy / magic / otherworldly type stuff or real world? If the former I'd say the Hatful of Sky series by Pratchett or the series that starts with "Pinch of Magic". If the latter, anything from Judy Blume to Jane Austen, depending on her level of reading.

My 13 year old ds is really into the maze runner series right now

Lokihare · 06/11/2023 18:11

Oh, so it is 🙈.

DelurkingAJ · 06/11/2023 18:17

What has he enjoyed? I second Terry Pratchett (Wee Free Men or maybe one of the Watch series). I assume he’s past Alex Rider and the like? And Percy Jackson.

If he likes non fiction then ‘Bad Science’ or ‘What If?’

EarthlyNightshade · 06/11/2023 18:21

David Almond - Skellig or Kit's Wilderness.

LeticiaDejeuner · 06/11/2023 18:23

The Young Samurai series by Chris Bradford is great for young lads, especially if he's interested in martial arts. First book is called The Way of The Warrior, and there's in 9 books in the series if he likes them.

Holes by Louis Sacher

the Crookhaven series by J.J. Arcanjo

Needmorelego · 06/11/2023 18:23

For teenage spies:
The Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz
Cherub series by Robert Muchamore (plus the prequel series Henderson Boys)
Young Bond
For Dystopia:
Hunger Games, Divergent, Maze Runner etc
Sci Fi ish : Gone by Michael Grant plus it's various sequels.

Lokihare · 06/11/2023 19:17

He used to be into HP but now he seems to start a book and not want to finish

OP posts:
Lokihare · 06/11/2023 19:29

@Needmorelego ate you sure the cherub series is age appropriate?

AugustRose · 06/11/2023 19:29

My 12 yrs old DS recommends:
Triskellion series by Will Peterson
Lockwood & Co
Skulduggery Pleasant
Midwinter Burning

DH suggests Gormenghast or Lord of the Rings

Lokihare · 06/11/2023 19:40

Triskrlliin now that’s an intense one!

Apologies, I read the first response post and went from that. My DS stopped reading around 11 😞 but the 13yo boys I teach who read are generally into sci fi and fantasy rather than anything else. If he is not good at finishing books though, maybe look for some collections of short stories?

Lokihare · 06/11/2023 19:46

I think he doesn’t finish them when he’s not into them. It’s not the length that’s the issue here!

OP posts:
Needmorelego · 06/11/2023 20:10

@Lokihare the author of Cherub has said they are suitable for 12 up. There is however a lot of bad language, reference to drug use, sex references and can be quite violent. The prequel series (Henderson's Boys) is more violent - it's set in WW2 so is more intense.

Needmorelego · 06/11/2023 20:13

@Lokihare he doesn't have to finish a book when he's not getting into it though.
What ones has he given up on and do you know why ?
I recently tried to read a book by an author who is the "in thing" at the moment - I couldn't get past 2 chapters because I found the main character so irritating even though the plot is something I usually enjoy.

Yorkshiregold · 06/11/2023 20:18

The Ryan Jacobs books by Paul Orton are really good. I read them together with my 12 year old reluctant reader and he really enjoyed them.

Lokihare · 06/11/2023 20:44

@Needmorelego but it’s usually just a page in 🤣

OP posts:
Needmorelego · 06/11/2023 21:01

@Lokihare oh dear....just a page ! At least I made 2 chapters 🙂
Would he read non-fiction? Biography of a favourite celeb? 1001 facts about Minecraft?

Lokihare · 06/11/2023 21:22

no not non fic

OP posts:
Needmorelego · 06/11/2023 22:12

@Lokihare maybe he just isn't going to be a reader if nothing is grabbing his attention.
As long as he can read enough to function in society he doesn't have to read fiction if he doesn't enjoy it. Not everyone does.

ConspicuouslyDifferent · 06/11/2023 22:20

My ds likes graphic novels (cartoon books) and they are very easy and quick to read. He likes especially the World Trigger series which is anime from Japan and you have to read it from right to left. He reads through the books very quickly and there are 25 of them, so plenty there.

He also likes the peanuts / Charlie Brown books, and What If.

He is currently reading the old testament aloud to us and we all giggle a lot at some of the silly bits, like massive lists of all different kinds of owls, if you get the right translation. There's a lot of sex in the old testament, so if you want to please your parents and have a giggle at the same time, it's a good bet. (sorry to anybody who thinks it is not a laughing matter.)

He also likes Lucky Luke, and Asterix, and Tin Tin. There are lots of those.

I can't remember what else.

ConspicuouslyDifferent · 06/11/2023 22:21

oh, also garfield and calvin and hobbs.

I know it's not booker prize winning literature, but it makes him happy and honestly who cares.
