Government to require banks to do monthly checks on the accounts of people on benefits and report back

I read about this here.

metro.co.uk/2023/11/06/benefits-claimants-to-have-bank-accounts-checked-monthly-in-crackdown-19779875/

Do you think they will do it or it'll be blocked?

It sounds awful. If I was on unemployment benefit I'd feel really humiliated. I understand fraud happens but bloody hell this is really not on.

I'd really appreciate it if anyone could tell me if this is going ahead. My son, a uni student, wants to borrow some money from me, about £350 and will pay me back in January when he next gets paid. He's done this before and always pays me back immediately. However, I'm now worried that when he transfers the money back into to my bank account this will alert the DWP and they will think it's fraudulent earnings. I can't ask him to pay me back in cash as he lives far away. I don't have any savings so it wouldn't take me anywhere near the 6k limit. Does anyone know if this would trigger the bank into informing the DWP. I really want to help him but am absolutely terrified with this supposedly new monthly monitoring of benefits claimants bank accounts.

nope its not in force
go ahead with your son i really dont think £300 will be a problem
it was supposed to be in the Autumn budget but did not hear anything anyway ive decided im not going to worry about any Tory ideas till the election is over they just seem to be throwing out any old rubbish to scare and delight voters

just say it was in force IT ISNT i really dont think moving a few hundred pounds would be a problem because if it was they would be having to deal with 100's of thousand cases each week and no way is that happening but i hate them for causing so much stress to genuine claimants and putting the fear of god into them

it just proves to me the Torys really hate claimants
please all remember this when the election comes round though i do wonder what Labour will squash and implement for the welfare state

@catskittens thanks so much for that information.

Actually if you read the autumn statement, you will find that this is in force but dwp will only have minimal access to bank account data. So they will only check savings limits and whether people are abroad for longer than their benefits allow them to. I don't think money incoming/outgoing will be an issue unless if the amount is over £6000

@Sahana28 thank you, that puts my mind at rest.

@Sameasyounow

Tbh though if it can be done who would object unless you have something to hide ?

I have lots of things to hide, it's called privacy🙄. After all MPs, the royal family etc are able to hide their affairs

It's like an ageing, Telegraph chat line in here.
I'm alright, too, jack, wink wink.
