What vitamins/supplements can you not do without?

Particularly if you're mid 40s.

Also, iron - any decent alternatives to ferrous fumerate/sulphate.

I already take thyroxine.

I take 630mg iron and 2000ui vitamin D every day, can't go without it, made a huge difference to my fatigue, brain fog and general lethargy

Lellochip · 06/11/2023 14:57

Folic acid and vitamin D, don't seem to feel much better when I do take them, but if I don't I'm deficient so I take them anyway

madeinmanc · 06/11/2023 15:02

I take vitamin D but after having a blood test that shows mine was too high (from supplementation) I now take a lower dose.

I take a cheap vitamin B complex and iron tablet (just from the supermarket). I find they keep me from suffering a mid afternoon crash at work.

RogerTaylorsdrumstool · 06/11/2023 15:49

I take magnesium and menopause gummies.
I ache and have hot flushes if I forget either one

MissingMoominMamma · 06/11/2023 15:50

I take Berocca (tablet form, not fizzies). It’s great.

NotLactoseFree · 06/11/2023 16:04

I am religious with Omega 3 (I use a linseed one). I find it helps with the night sweats, insomnia and, weirdly, jerky legs (I thought the jerky legs was one that you're supposed to take magnesium for).

I SHOULD be religious with, but am annoyingly casual about, Vitamin D and Iron.

Bemyclementine · 07/11/2023 14:14

I'm too casual with the iron too, but mostly because I bloody hate it.

Have blood tests Friday so hoping that'll show something up, I'm just so tired.

Vit D.. on prescription as I was very low.

Mytholmroyd · 07/11/2023 14:23

Vit D in autumn and winter mostly
Omega 3
Vit B complex
Magnesium

And because my nutritionist daughter tells me to:
Pterostilbene + NMN

Moredarkchocolateplease · 07/11/2023 14:24

I stopped taking iron once I had a coil fitted as I stopped flooding, but I found ferrous sulphate brilliant. Every 48 hrs, two hrs before breakfast with a vitamin C tablet. Raised my ferritin to a very healthy level.

I take mag glycinate x2 everyday, plus vit B, D and zinc.

I also eat an abundant diet of vet, fruit, nuts, seeds and pulses. And onions for the gut biome.

I also eat a lot of kefir and drink kombucha occasionally.

Some of that must be doing me some good right?!

slavetothekittens · 07/11/2023 15:18

Vitamin D, B12, iron and echinacea are my absolute musts.

Ruminate2much · 07/11/2023 15:22

B12 as I'm a vegan. Magnesium, as it helps me sleep.

I take other supplements too, but those are two I prioritise

MrShady · 07/11/2023 15:38

4000IU vitamin d for me
Then a multi vitamin
Iron separately (hema plex is the one I take)
Started a joint supplement as I'm having lots of knee noise!

jillies · 07/11/2023 15:46

Omega fish oil - high dose

Iron

I also take biotin (couple of years in), but I have no idea if that helps.

Porridgeislife · 07/11/2023 15:49

High dose of Vit D. I have an overactive immune system and it makes a huge difference to joint pain and dry eyes.

OceanicBoundlessness · 07/11/2023 15:49

Magnesium - need for so many body processes and hopefully helps with vitamin D levels.
Lions mane - I don't lose words anything like as often since I started taking it
Seaweed for the iodine and Brazil nuts for selenium

Occasional b vitamins.

I eat lots of prebiotic food - onion, garlic, asparagus, leek and I'm experimenting with fermented drinks for the probiotics

Then if ill
Vitamin c
Zinc
Quercetin
Nettle tea (brings inflammation down, natural anti histamine)
Elderflower tea (elderberry syrup if I think I've contracted a virus)
Ferrum phos tissue salt

PaminaMozart · 07/11/2023 15:54

Omega 3
Vitamin D
Vitamin C
Vitamin B complex
Zinc
Magnesium
Calcium

However, I have reduced my calcium supplements due to recent findings about a potential link with colon polyps, kidney stones and build-up in the heart arteries. I'll ask my doctor about this at my next physical.

NB: I am a little surprised about the many mentions of iron as my doctor never mentions it as being necessary.

jillies · 07/11/2023 15:57

Your list of supplements is interesting @OceanicBoundlessness

I also take nettle tea occasionally. I like the bitterness, but will often mix with something else. Which fermented drinks are you experimenting with if you don't mind my asking?

Mytholmroyd · 07/11/2023 16:07

Lions mane - I don't lose words anything like as often since I started taking it

That's interesting @OceanicBoundlessness I shall think about taking that!

I also eat (chocolate!) covered Brazil nuts for selenium! Love them

MrShady · 07/11/2023 16:08

If anyone wants reasonable priced ones, I've used both these companies

https://www.nutritiongeeks.co

https://sealions.com (does childrens too)

uncomfortablydumb53 · 07/11/2023 17:11

I take lutein and zeaxanthin for eye health without fail
I have Myopic macular degeneration and glaucoma and I'm scared of it getting worse
I also take an a-z multivitamin and mineral supplement, just a supermarket one as my diet isn't great

OceanicBoundlessness · 07/11/2023 17:17

@jillies current experiment is pine needle soda
https://msshiandmrhe.com/pine-needle-soda/

I think you can use pretty much anything (rosehips, berries etc) if you use some ginger for the natural yeast, but I'm intrigued to see if this works without.

Gymnopedie · 07/11/2023 17:43

OP if you're taking the iron too close to the thyroxine that could be your problem with tiredness. Iron badly interferes with the absorption of thyroxine so it maybe that your body isn't getting the amount of thyroxine it should. The two should be taken at least two hours apart and ideally four.

madeinmanc · 07/11/2023 19:37

I'd definitely say be careful about taking vitamin D endlessly for years, it needs checking with a blood test at some point as my experience shows.
