New kitten- where to sleep?

meeeeeowh · 05/11/2023 19:22

Have name changed as I've added a picture of the new addition.

We picked him up this morning, he's been a big brave boy and has had lunch and dinner, water, used his litter tray twice and has been playing in the lounge with some toys and our feet (!)

If my 6 and 3 year old DS left the room he'd cry straight away.

I don't want him to stay down tonight, he has no interest yet in the cat bed we've bought him, he's had a few naps on the rug in the lounge today against the sofa. He's too tiny to be on a human bed without getting hurt.
Where should I be putting the wee beast?

Thanks

your bed, obviously. You are going to sleep in the cat basket

Reddishraddish · 05/11/2023 19:25

beautiful little thing! Can you put that rug he likes in a cage in your room? with litter tray and food and water?

pointythings · 05/11/2023 19:26

If you have space in your bedroom, move litter tray in there each night and create somewhere cozy to sleep - folded fleece blanket is a favourite here, Make sure water and dry food are readily available. Once kitten is old enough to have the run of the house at night, he/she will make their own mind up. One of mine sleeps on my bed every night, some of the others join every now and then.

Rug is as almost as big as the living room floor and stuck down with rug grippers! Should I have litter tray and food and water in our bedroom tonight?

I pop mine in the cat carrier (lined with a comfy blanket) on my bedside table facing me. I leave the end open and have woken up to find them snuggled up against my hair before. Other times they’ve stayed in the carrier but seem comforted by having eyes on.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 05/11/2023 19:27

There's a very special place. It's warm, body temperature, in fact, secure, he'll be protected on both sides and will be soft and snuggly. He'll even be able to nuzzle up to something that feels vaguely like very long fur.

Between your pillows, just at the top of your bed.

Of course, the ideal will likely become alongside a child as he gets bigger, but for now, a little section where you might wake up to him chewing on your nose is just what a kitten needs.

birdglasspen · 05/11/2023 19:28

don’t put the litter tray in your room, the kittens cute but what comes out is foul 😂 personally I’d leave it in a safe room with all it needs but my last kitten was plural and they had each other!

CesareBorgia · 05/11/2023 19:30

your pillow - they usually like sleeping near your head when they're tiny.

pointythings · 05/11/2023 19:32

@birdglasspen I'm currently socialising my latest addition so he's sleeping in with me and I have a litter tray in my room. All I get overnight is pee, so it really isn't that bad. OP can always leave the bedroom door open a smidge and have the tray on the landing if it's an issue.

TomatoSandwiches · 05/11/2023 19:33

When our two were tiny we had a XL dog crate in our bedroom with one corner each assigned the litter tray, dry food and water bowl, cat bed.
Now they have a litter tray, food and water with a big dog sized bed in the utility.
I would choose a warm room and pop a litter tray food and water in there and see how they go.

meeeeeowh · 05/11/2023 19:33

His he likely to pee or poo on the bed? I've been putting him in litter tray today

OP posts:
pointythings · 05/11/2023 19:34

@meeeeeowh if he isn't secure in his use of the tray, obviously don't have him on your bed...

meeeeeowh · 05/11/2023 19:37

Well I've only had him 3/4 of a day so far! He was using litter tray confidently at his old owners, but he doesn't know the way around the house yet so I'd been putting him in the litter tray, and both times he went

Kittens are just like human babies. They can be afraid of being alone. You might end up sleeping on the couch a few nights with him sleeping on your chest, feeling your heartbeat.
Once he finds his feet a nice fleecy cat bed will be fine x

lunar1 · 05/11/2023 19:39

He sleeps on your pillow, right in the middle, you have to slither down the bed a little

Yes we picked up a kitten last week and for the first two nights he was in our bedroom with litter and food. Now a week later he still sleeps in our bed but able to go downstairs for food and tray

Podgedodge · 05/11/2023 19:40

Kittens sleep on the bed! No other choice. Litter tray nearby. No DH, because they roll over without thinking. Only for a few weeks…Then you get to wake up to this❤️

We kept our new kitten locked in the kitchen overnight for the first month until he knew his way around. He doesn't seem adversely affected. I'd be afraid of him peeing in the bedroom.

Beamur · 05/11/2023 19:49

In a safe room with bed, litter tray and food. We shut ours (why do you have only 1? Two is better) in the kitchen overnight until they were about 6 months old (but bigger, less crazy) and then let them decide where they want to sleep. Cat 1 - my neck. Cat 2 - either my feet or in her bed in DD's room.

Scampuss · 05/11/2023 19:57

I would leave him in the room where all his stuff is (and maybe sleep there with him...).

meeeeeowh · 05/11/2023 20:01

@Beamur one kitten litter

OP posts:
Beamur · 05/11/2023 20:03

Sweet. You can still get another one? My previous pair were not siblings but were lovely company for one another.

meeeeeowh · 05/11/2023 20:09

@Beamur I asked for some advice on here about whether to get another kitten from another litter. A lot of people replied and said as kittens it was lovely, as grown up cats they tolerated each other rather than liked each other! It was that, plus the thought of double vet bills, insurance etc etc. I do love seeing pairs of kittens playing together though

Excited101 · 05/11/2023 20:10

Can you get his mum too? A one kitten litter really shouldn’t be taken away 😢

meeeeeowh · 05/11/2023 20:12

No they wanted to keep mum, just advertising this little boy
