We've just got in from being away for half term, and DM has brought us a food parcel...

What would you put in a food parcel for 2 adults and 2 teens to tide them over til tomorrow? DM has always had a disordered relationship with food, but this is one of her "best" efforts! I appreciate the gesture - which she insisted upon - and I have enough experience of her "meals" * to have got milk, bread, ham and a few bits in on the way home. To which we can add her food parcel of:

1 bottle wine
6 pack individual Mr Kipling type apple pies
2 bags of marshmallows
1 box Christmas chocolate biscuits

Apparently we'll all be very tired (we are, very early get up for flight) and need the sugar. She genuinely thinks that this is the basis for a good, light evening meal. (And yes, she's type 2 diabetic!).

I am sure this is meant to be 'lighthearted' but, given your mum's disordered history with food I think this is kind of mean.

'Food parcel' - do you mean a few bits for the fridge? Or are you in genuine need?

Pugdays · 05/11/2023 18:37

Never had a food parcel
I'd quite like one though

Elderflower14 · 05/11/2023 18:38

You sound very ungrateful. You should appreciate her... When she isn't here any more you will wish you had...

I would appreciate anything. She didn't have to.leave anything

Purplecatshopaholic · 05/11/2023 18:40

Awesome food parcel - she’s a legend! Lol

BCBird · 05/11/2023 18:40

I used.to do one for my mom. It consisted of bread, cream cakes and possibly cheese. If she had provided me with a list I would have got what she asked for. If she had moaned about what I chose to get,I would not have bothered again

Mysonwontwash · 05/11/2023 18:46

I think it’s a lovely gesture even if it’s not what you would have chosen yourself.
maybe focus more on her thoughtfulness and not so much the contents of her food parcel.

Strugglingtodomybest · 05/11/2023 18:53

Oh Jesus, some of these replies! You do know this is 'Chat' don't you? The OP is just chatting, she's not sneering in the least.

I get it OP. My mum brought us 6 mince pies, 5 mini rolls, and a fruit cake when we got back from holiday last week. It was much appreciated and lovely of her to do so, BUT if she had told me that she was bringing round stuff for an evening meal I'd have been as bemused as you were!

MarzipanKnees · 05/11/2023 18:58

You don’t sound sneery in the slightest @IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads! My mum would have offered similar. Though she was also a big fan of those 40 piece Iceland party packs, but would bring them defrosted as they didn’t fit in her freezer :)

RaininSummer · 05/11/2023 18:59

Sweet if her all the same but it reminds me of the time I had just returned home after giving birth. My mum was staying and asked my partner to get a shop in. He returned with fish sticks, olives and a lot of wine leaving my mum nonplussed about dinner ideas

Bigbabymomma · 05/11/2023 19:06

I find this very mean.

I would love that, how thoughtful of her! It’s a bit mean to post making fun of her online.

Yes, maybe a bit scatty but well meaning mum. Daughter just mean 😪

Icopewhenihope · 05/11/2023 19:11

She sounds great. I do think you are a bit ungrateful and sneery though. She did a nice thing.

verdantverdure · 05/11/2023 19:14

Oh lord. It's always difficult when someone is determined to do you a favour that isn't really a favour.

I don't really consider any of that "food " to be honest, let alone any kind of meal.

This is one of those where you have to hard on "it's the thought that counts" I think.

TomatoSandwiches · 05/11/2023 15:49

Well.... I suppose she could have not bothered at all?
I hope her disordered attempts are seen as a affectionate personality quirk instead of a flaw.

This in a nutshell

I completely agree! I’d have ensured I had made arrangements for dinner if I knew I’d been travelling all day after an early start, so the goody bag from Mother would be a nice treat.
Nip to the chippy if you’re hungry!!!

Errr…. That’s what the OP did!!

I know…

Its amazing to see how people can be determined to see only what they want to see!

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 05/11/2023 19:41

It’s not a meal but a nice treat.

BustyLaRoux · 05/11/2023 19:46

Strange thing to post about. It’s a kind gesture. I’d be well chuffed.

CurlsandCurves · 05/11/2023 19:48

Its a lovely gesture on your mums part, ok not the most practical, but lovely all the same.

Whenever we go away we usually drop a quick message to get xyz for our return. Just usually a pint of milk, eggs, get bread out of the freezer etc depending on what time of day we get back. And obviously we do the same when they’re away.

BackOfTheMum5net · 05/11/2023 19:48

I’d be thrilled to receive such a gift.

TheRealLilyMunster · 05/11/2023 19:49

Be nice to your mum. No need to come on here and ridicule her after shes tried to do something nice for you.

rc22 · 05/11/2023 19:55

She sounds lovely. They were maybe meant as welcome home treats.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 05/11/2023 20:30

I think that is really kind of her and she probably knew you would get few bits for dinner and breakfast and wanted to get you a nice few treats. Seems ungrateful and unkind of you and you are lucky she thought of you and got wine for you and treats for kids. Cannot understand your way of thinking.
