Do you believe in horoscopes?

Are you a textbook Taurus or a classic Cancer? Does your rising sign make a difference? Can you guess people's astrological signs? Do you identify with a famous person who shares your sign or date of birth?

God no, it's a load of bollocks just like tarot cards.

People who are very happy with their lives rarely believe in these things.

Sadly it's those who aren't who tend to.

Theproofofthepudding · 04/11/2023 23:52

If you take the time and effort to work out a birthchart you will maybe appreciate that it's not about being the same as 1/12 of the population, the stuff you read in the newspaper is very general .Years ago I bought a kit and it involved sines angles and quite complicated. Your sun and rising signs are only the start! Luckily computers make it much easier to do a chart. I felt mine was quite accurate

I believe in horoscopes. Every day I read the star signs and they always come true.

Yesterday for example I was told I’m anxious about a future event. So true: I’m anxious about the family coming round at Christmas. Uncanny.

Also, a loved one did irritate me. Wretched child and her unwashed PE kit.

And, amazingly, I did travel to a place that meant something to me! I went to see my Dad!

How could anyone not believe in these pinpoint accurate insights and forecasts?

@Theproofofthepudding what do you think the mechanism is that makes the position of constellations at the time of your birth affect your personality and make it possible to accurately predict future events for you?

Would you mind explaining how you think that the minds of millions of individual humans can be influenced by the position of the stars at the point of their birth, rather than by what happens either at conception (nature) or through experience (nurture)? What mechanism is there for the position of bodies in space to have an influence on the psyche?

JuJuHeyHey · 04/11/2023 23:59

I paid for a detailed natal chart which described me incredibly well, and also a compatibility chart which looked at my relationship with someone else and described in uncanny detail how we communicate, where the strengths and tensions lay, etc. Money well spent, because that felt like it was based on improving understanding of how to interact with someone else.

As PPs have said, all the 'beware an unusual encounter' and 'you may come into some money' Mystic Meg type nonsense is just fiction.

It’s all just confirmation bias, I’m afraid. What proportion of this report was wrong, compared to the bits you felt you could make fit to your own life?

Chromium24 · 05/11/2023 00:09

i like reading them but thats as far as i get

JamSandle · 05/11/2023 00:42

Well I definitely relate to everything about Aquarius.

QueenBitch666 · 05/11/2023 02:19

About as relevant and accurate as pronouns

Theproofofthepudding · 05/11/2023 15:25

There is no proof, but I found it interesting (character wise) a point well documented is how the moon effects peoples moods, a lot of emergency services recognise trouble around a full moon for example. Think of the tides and how much water is in the human body. My mercury is in gemini that makes me chatty, and my saturn is in pisces that makes me negative. The starsign is just how you appear on the surface, and I'm true to that also. The daily horoscopes are a bit of fun, and a way to make money when it comes to premium rate phone calls, let's face it? But if there's a way you can research your own chart, it takes a lot to do one if you DIY, you can judge from a different viewpoint

Orchidgarden · 05/11/2023 15:36

I like reading them occasionally, and I have the personality traits of my star sign.
We are a part of the universe, and I can believe that we are influenced by it.
There was a thread recently about changes in people during the full moon. Many people observed changes in behaviour. So if the moon has an influence on us, why not other planets? (Yes the moon is closer to us, I get that).
I don't believe in the Mystic Meg types though.

egowise · 05/11/2023 15:36

No

Manadou · 05/11/2023 15:37

I believe in horoscopes to the same extent that I believe in fairies, that is not at all.

Theproofofthepudding · 05/11/2023 15:37

Forfar there are many more individual combinations of course, and nurture will have a massive impact on life prospects. I guess having an insight into your strengths and weaknesses will stand you into better stead than, just trying to fit in. Square pegs and round holes etc. We are recognising neuro diversity these days, its always been a thing obviously the same as homosexuality. I definitely dont live my life via my horoscope but I keep an open mind. I'm also considering that aliens may already live amongst us and are influencing us..no proof of course

usedtobeasizeten · 05/11/2023 15:40

No.

It's been a long time since I've met anyone who believes in astrology.

They walk among us though, and you don't know it until they say "so this baby will definitely be an Aries, and that is such a relief. Olderchild was meant to be Aquarius but because she was premature she's a Capricorn! Like me! So you can imagine, that is why we clash so much."

@Orchidgarden

I like reading them occasionally,

You regularly read, in accounts of the early careers of journalists, that they started off on local papers and one of the jobs, along with making the tea, was to prepare the horoscopes, usually by copying the one for the same date 30 years before.

When I was a baby my mum and dad took me to a gipsy fortune teller and paid for a written horoscope which I still have. It was spectacularly wrong about everything. I was not rich before I was 30, I am not musical, and I am not a doctor

But have you travelled over water?

Ha! Bet you have. See, they’re not all wrong.

Theproofofthepudding · 05/11/2023 16:16

A lazy journalist could well be a Taurean with a good dose of gemini, I'm not a journalist, but I understand the nuance

Vitriolinsanity · 05/11/2023 17:58

I don't read them any more- but I do think the traits are often surprisingly accurate when I'm a little bored in team meetings

TheKnittedCharacter · 05/11/2023 18:01

No! I’d say it’s decades since I heard anyone talk of the nonsense that is astrology, but I have a colleague who is a 52 year old man and he often says things like ‘I’m a typical Scorpio’. It makes me somewhat flabbergasted as he’s quite normal in other ways.

WinteryWonderland · 05/11/2023 18:06

I do 🧏‍♀️ not the Russell Grant type of horoscopes in the papers 🤣 but I do believe our astrological signs. I'm a Leo in every way personality wise.
DH is a Libra, I knew before he told me which star sign he was when we met as was always very obsessed with fairness and balance.
My Step daughter is a Capricorn and I also knew this before I asked him.
I believe the time of year we were born will have an impact on our personality. I've read quite a bit about it and find it fascinating! Obviously I realise I'm in the minority.

Theproofofthepudding · 05/11/2023 18:45

I think we are being more manipulated by the main stream media and social media than ever we were by horoscopes. Proper Astrology is quite complicated and niche when you look into it, like religion it's a choice to believe or not or just be open. Curiosity is a good thing...always!

Not when your mind is so slack-jawed it swallows complete nonsense.
