Is that rain or ash coming down?

livefromiceland.is/webcams/selvogur

Must be ash, I think?

Puffinshop · 18/12/2023 23:47

Oh my god, this is the glow just outside my back door. And we are reasonably far away.

CrunchyCarrot · 18/12/2023 23:48

It really does look like Mordor in the distance.

Puffinshop · 18/12/2023 23:49

There's no ash, it's just lava you can tell.

Puffinshop · 18/12/2023 23:59

The view from across the bay Shock

Wow @Puffinshop it's incredible. Fissure seems to be extending.

Seeingadistance · 19/12/2023 00:09

Wow! Just amazing to see!

JemimaTab · 19/12/2023 00:09

RÚV is saying the fissure is now 3.5 km long.

RomComPhooey · 19/12/2023 00:18

Yikes. The suddenness of the eruption on the webcam was astonishing. It is very close the Northern Lights Inn where we stayed, as that’s just off the main road into Grindavik next to the power station. 😬

Puffinshop · 18/12/2023 23:49

Oh right

will you be okay re air quality etc?

KenAdams · 19/12/2023 00:23

Stay safe please @Puffinshop. The live feed I'm watching has changed in that where seems to be a bit more ash than earlier.

I'm watching the helicopter fly about on my ADBS exchange. Its still up so there will be more info when it reports back.

Essentially, this volcano mapped many possible paths months ago as we've seen. As mentioned above, this isn't a tourist eruption. This one is serious.

It looks to be moving so quickly.

I hope you get some sleep, Puffin. It’s going to be a busy few days.

Puffinshop · 19/12/2023 00:24

Should be mainly fine, it depends on the gases and wind direction.

I suppose the big old defensive wall might get put to the test in the not too distant future. I'm not sure how far they'd progressed with it.

I'm going to have to go to bed but it's going to be difficult to get to sleep.

Puffinshop · 19/12/2023 00:25

It's a cloudy drizzly evening, you can see the lava illuminating the clouds but they are indeed clouds and not ash.

Puffinshop · 19/12/2023 00:32

Or yeah there is smoke/gases which is obviously not a normal cloud, but it's not an explosive eruption. Ash is like powdered rock that then rains back down, this isn't that. It's not going to cause ash fall. I'm far from an expert in earth sciences as you can tell but I do know this kind of fissure with lava fountains doesn't produce ash.

EmmaEmerald · 19/12/2023 00:35

@Puffinshop hope you manage to get some rest.

RomComPhooey · 19/12/2023 00:42

I just had a look at the chat in Volcano Cafe. Their current chat is under the most recent blog. They are proper volcano nerds, hobbyists and geologists. The site thread formatting is shocking and makes Mumsnet look next century awesome. They are saying the fissure is still opening, currently 4km, and lava is flowing west towards the road.

When volcanoes bring rain?

I feel fascinated by volcanoes and I think that’s quite obvious, but there’s also room for other natural phenomena, like weather. In Spain, my home, volcanoes are rare. We do have a ~10,000-year-ol…

The fissure originating from the Sundhnúka crater series near Grindavíkurbær has rapidly expanded to approximately two kilometers from the town and continues to grow, with the potential to extend southwest. Benedikt Gunnar Ófeigsson, Head of Deformation Measurements at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, notes the uncertainty regarding the fissure's progression in the coming hours.

Lava is currently flowing north and east, and though southward flow has not commenced, the situation is evolving quickly. The crack is notably four times longer than in the previous Litla-Hrút eruption in July, indicating a more forceful start.

RedToothBrush · 19/12/2023 00:58

Updated December 19 at 00:30

According to the latest measurements, the seismic activity is moving south towards Grindavík. The measured activity is just east of the magma tunnel that formed on the 10th. november This development of the seismic activity together with measurements from GPS devices is an indication that the magma is moving southwest and the eruption may continue in the direction of Grindavík

Puffinshop · 19/12/2023 01:10

Can't tear myself away. The fissure is still growing longer and seems to be extending towards Grindavík. It's about 2 km away. This is so serious.

RedToothBrush · 19/12/2023 01:10

Lava could be in Grindavik in 12 hours.

I can't imagine anyone from Grindavík is sleeping a wink this night.

ImustLearn2Cook · 19/12/2023 01:39

First, I hope everyone will be safe and I hope nobody loses their homes.

Nature is truly amazing. These are screenshots from video taken from helicopter from following website:
