Flatmate says I owe her £600

I was meeting my flatmate (who is also a good friend) in London recently and agreed to bring her weekend bag with me on the train (She was meeting her DM earlier in the day for a trip to the Theatre) I had a rucksack containing my things for the weekend.
I got off the train in London and realised I had stupidly left her bag on the train. I got back on the train but the bag was gone! It hasn't turned up in lost property. I have chased up several times.
My friend says I owe her £600 for the bag and contents. I agree it was my fault but can I claim compensation from the rail company as the bag hasn't turned up? If not, I will have to borrow money to pay my friend for her things

It's not the rail company's responsibility so you won't get anything from them.
Whatever outcome will have to be agreed between you and your friend.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 02/11/2023 15:14

£600?

What was in it?

purplecorkheart · 02/11/2023 15:14

What was in the bag? Have you put posts on the local facebook pages of the town that the train stopped in?

NotFastButFurious · 02/11/2023 15:14

well you lost her bag so unless she's got insurance to cover it and you pay the excess, then yes, I think you do owe her for the somewhat expensive contents.

Riverstep · 02/11/2023 15:15

I doubt you will be able to claim from the rail company for this as you left the bag unattended. So frustrating when things like this happen though.

NotFastButFurious · 02/11/2023 15:17

although £600 sounds a lot, my running trainers are worth nearly £200, my case is over £100, so that's half that without adding any clothes, toiletries or perfume etc.

jlpth · 02/11/2023 15:17

I would say alright you owe it if it was £50-£100. But £600 is an insurance job. Although you left it on the train, it appears to have been stolen.

itsmylife7 · 02/11/2023 15:18

You were responsible for losing her bag,yes but was it a designer one and what did it contain.

Digestivesandcheese · 02/11/2023 15:19

Expensive bag containing clothes, shoes, toiletries and make up for a weekend in London. Her things are more upmarket than mine.
I wish it had been my bag I left behind. To replace my stuff would be around £200

Why would the rail company cover it? They have plenty of voice overs reminding people of expectations on the train. It's not their fault you left it and it's not their fault someone stole it.

SecondUsername4me · 02/11/2023 15:20

Did you get straight back on the train as soon as you got off? Sounds more like it was taken during the travel than the few minutes you got off and got straight back on again.

BeetleDeuce · 02/11/2023 15:20

Where had you left it? It sounds like it was stolen - how long did you leave it unaccompanied. Have you reported it to the train company/police?

If you can’t go through insurance then I have sympathy with your friend really.

Doggymummar · 02/11/2023 15:21

It's your responsibility, you didn't take care of it. Claim on your contents policy

Burnoutwhat · 02/11/2023 15:22

That seems like a lot what was in it? But it's your fault not the rail company. Not sure why they would pay. It's different if you had it stolen while you were there

StarlightLime · 02/11/2023 15:22

Of course National Rail aren't going to compensate you for leaving your bag on a train and it subsequently being stolen... Can you even be serious?!
You owe your friend the value of what you lost, why are you trying to shift the blame onto somebody else?

qnamdlekanakajenenqkakan · 02/11/2023 15:23

Bizarre

SunshineAndFizz · 02/11/2023 15:24

Dry annoying for you, but yes you'll have to pay or claim on insurance.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 02/11/2023 15:24

The rail company isn't liable. You left the bag, and it was probably taken by another passenger.

I would want to know what was in the bag that would cost £600 to replace, but if that's what it will cost her I would give her the money.

Thatsplentyjack · 02/11/2023 15:24

Sounds more like ot was stolen! I wouldn't say you're responsible for replacing her stuff! Surely they have cctv on trains?

Digestivesandcheese · 02/11/2023 15:25

I did get almost get straight back on the train- no more than 2/3 minutes.
The bag was gone and hasn't turned up

She needs to claim on her insurance

BitofaStramash · 02/11/2023 15:25

She needs to claim on her insurance

Which insurance?

EbesneezerCold · 02/11/2023 15:26

Check your contents insurance policies. Mine covers for the contents of my handbag (and the bag itself)

Spirro · 02/11/2023 15:26

You agreed to take charge of the bag, then you lost it. So yes it’s your fault. The train company isn’t responsible for you losing something on a train. Your friend wasn’t even there so definitely isn’t responsible! Sorry but you need to pay up, or claim on your insurance.

Digestivesandcheese · 02/11/2023 15:26

The CCTV footage isn't available with no explanation as to why
