If you rely on your phone for everything

to pay for stuff, route finding, apps to call a taxi etc...

Do you always carry a spare battery pack with you, or would you always be close to a car anyway with a charger cable in it? Or your phone battery always lasts 24 hours+ no matter how intensively used the phone is.

Just wondering how people make sure the phone will always have enough charge in it, if you're super reliant on your phone. And if you carry a battery pack, how do you make sure that always has enough charge in it (and do you carry more than one spare cable in case cable goes faulty)

My iPhone lasts all day and night easily. It is a 14 pro max though. I very much doubt that anyone who “relies on their phone for everything” is rocking a six year old model.

Weird comment seeing as that they do identical jobs.

The poster means that other phones batteries last all day and night. Iphones don't.

I sometimes take a battery pack with me but following on from moving to android I rarely need to

Frequency · 02/11/2023 17:23

I have a Samsung. If my battery is below 75% and I'm going out for more than 12 hours I might take a battery pack if I have one charged but I don't usually need it.

Unless I was hammering battery-intensive things like graphics-heavy games for hours at a time my battery would last a bit longer than 24 hours with normal day-out type use (Google Pay/maps/pics/messages etc).

If I'm traveling by train or bus and going to be listening to music/reading a Kindle App then I pack a charger and usually charge it on my way home.

RunnyPaint · 02/11/2023 17:29

My question wasn't remotely odd, OP. I've had two iPhones and their batteries would go flat very quickly. This is a well-known issue with that type of phone. My friends who complain about batteries going flat too quickly are all Apple devotees, so they obviously don't mind carrying battery packs/cables everywhere. Android phones don't tend to suffer with the same problems.

BertieBotts · 02/11/2023 17:30

I prioritise battery life when I buy a phone as it's something that's really important to me and I use it a lot. For my last two phones the battery has lasted 2-3 days on a full charge when it was brand new. When it gets down to less than 12 hours, I look to replace the phone (it's generally about 3 years old at this point so usually more cost effective to replace the phone than the battery).

My current phone is about 2.5 years old and it's still fine all day, sometimes has over 50% battery life left at bedtime.

I also tend to avoid activities on the phone which are too battery draining. No youtube/tiktok, I'm picky about games, MN is on adblock browser only.

It used to be that phone batteries lasted much less long, I remember playing Pokemon Go and DH and I got a battery pack each, but I think with more up to date phones this has got so much better.

BertieBotts · 02/11/2023 17:44

A lot of modern phones will also have a battery saver mode that you can set to kick in after a certain battery percentage or mine will do "if it's likely to run out before you usually charge" but then I've confused it no end by plugging and unplugging it to go and see to DS3 in the night so it starts to switch it on at 80% battery Hmm

lljkk · 02/11/2023 17:46

Is this actually a problem in your life OP or is it a problem you think others have?

I recently upgraded from an Samsung Galaxy S8 to an S22. The S8 didn't last at all if it was being used, maybe 4 hours max. Google maps drained it especially fast. I still don't trust the S22 to last well.

I really don't want to haul extra cables & a battery bank, I already carry too much of the kitchen sink with me (!) Every time I read MNers say how they use their phone for "everything" I wonder how they manage unless they haul batter packs & cables etc.

Especially payments. The nice thing about cash is that it doesn't depend on battery life.

I have an iPhone and have always been fairly lucky with battery life, but I know lots of people who have had battery issues with them. I don't generally carry a power bank with me but I did when I was on holiday as I was taking a lot of photos. I have an Anker one that will charge an iPhone approximately four times. It's a little bit heavy but I generally left it in my bag on the coach so wasn't carrying it around. I mostly had to use it to charge my Mum's phone as she wouldn't leave her phone on flight mode despite being reminded, and we were in areas that didn't have a signal and the constant searching ran her battery down very quickly. There was one day that I needed it for myself, although I probably would have been ok, I just don't like it going below about 25%.

I have cheap, light-weight power banks that I got from Flying Tiger that I keep charged up at home for the DC to use because they seem to hate actually plugging their phones in to a fixed point.

Ah okay. I'm quite shocked by how poor that is, to the point it sounds faulty. I can easily sit on my phone for a few hours and it has plenty of life left.

uhtredsonofuhtred1 · 02/11/2023 18:16

I've only ever had iPhones as my personal phone and then Samsungs for work. I don't really notice any difference in battery life to be honest. My iPhone is only about a year old but the teenagers have got my old ones which are maybe 2&3 years old and still last the full day and evening despite them being glued to their screens! The only time I have issues with battery life is around the time of new release iPhones. For about 2 weeks the battery on our phones is shocking, I end up having to charge it at 3pm when normally it'd last until bedtime. And yes, I do use my phone for everything! I have a charger in the car but only use it for long journeys and we do have a power bank which I only use for the kids tablets

Tarantella6 · 02/11/2023 18:19

I have a desk job so I can charge my phone all day if necessary and I usually charge it overnight. If I'm out for a full day I am a bit cautious about using it - I only use Google maps for more than 20 minutes if I'm plugged into a cable in the car, and I wouldn't play games for an hour on a train for example. But the battery is fine for a day out, messages, photos etc as long as I don't go crazy. Samsung S21.

calyxx · 02/11/2023 18:23

Ah, the mumsnet phone, like the mumsnet chicken. Lasts six weeks on one charge.

Oblomov23 · 02/11/2023 18:24

I'm on my phone a lot, I use it a lot. Like 5 to 12 hours of usage. I charge it at night and it lasts all day. I've had iPhones for donkeys years. So I never run out, I don't even own a power pack. I have a charger at work but rarely use it. I don't even have one in the car.

coffeetofunction · 02/11/2023 18:28

Google phone here and it has all my life on.... Clear not my life and I can live without a phone but my calendar, I use it to pay, to plan travelling, school contact via apps, I'm ICM for people, I use it to track my kids, photos, lists including shopping and Christmas gifts, for my banking, TV watch TV via chrome cast, connected to Google home. Next I intend to add lights, heating, doorbell

coffeetofunction · 02/11/2023 18:30

Posted to fast.... The battery lasts all day, two if I don't play games, listen to music ect. I have battery packs but have a wire in the car which I take out if I think I might need some charge. Most places I go will plug it in for half an to get so charge if needed

DyslexicPoster · 02/11/2023 18:33

My phone lasts 24 hours, longer if I'm not on MN! I always have a power bank on me unless I'm just popping to the shops or catch up with mates. My power us always at 100% and hardly ever used.

BarelyCoping123 · 02/11/2023 18:36

Yes, battery power-pack in my handbag

Try one of these OP, they make them for all kinds of phones, including iphones so they come with different charging port. Just look for the right model. No cables, and it's light and small. On mine(I have an iphone) half it's power gives me 100% battery. It fully charges pretty quick as well. I just put it to charge every time I use it.

RoseMartha · 02/11/2023 18:53

I always carry a power bank in my handbag. I do have a charging cable in the car used mainly by my teens.
I do also sometimes pop out without the means to charge my phone if out for a short while.

Torganer · 02/11/2023 19:02

I have a tiny charger (about the size of an AA battery). I keep it in a bag or my pocket. It’s very useful.

HelterSkelter224 · 02/11/2023 19:11

I always just change it. Have almost caught myself short a few times but never completely so until I do I won't learn my lesson

HelterSkelter224 · 02/11/2023 19:12

Chance it*

Whalewatchers · 02/11/2023 19:15

My Redmi Note 11 Pro supports 67w charging. It takes less than 20 minutes to get to 80% from flat and this lasts a day, easily. No need to take cables or chargers out with me.

LlynTegid · 02/11/2023 19:16

I don't, not because of battery life, but because I know that masts can be faulty and so a signal not obtainable on occasions.

coxesorangepippin · 02/11/2023 19:16

I take my charger when I go into the office

And I have cables in the car

I don't have a spare battery pack
