Anyone else feel icky away from home?

Currently away from home for the week and experiencing a life long problem…genuine ickiness about hotel showers, beds, carpets, cups, kettles…you name it, it makes my toes curl. To the point that it makes me desperate for my own shower and bed! It’s not homesickness in the sense that I’m sad or missing home. It’s like a disgust response but there’s nothing disgusting!

But I never hear anyone else ever describe this feeling! Place we are staying seems clean enough and it’s not specific to this place anyway. It is anywhere! Not just hotels. Any kind of holiday accommodation.

I don’t feel this way staying with family (as in at the home of either of my parents) and maybe one or two close friends although it’s been a long time since I slept at a friend’s house.

Is this just me?!

Not just you...I dont really like going on holidays for this reason..ugh the bed...imagine how many people have slept on it.

RettyPriddle · 01/11/2023 22:20

Agree. I feel the same.

ThreeRingCircus · 01/11/2023 22:24

I know exactly what you mean as I absolutely detest sleeping in hotel beds. In fact, I don't. I sleep on top of the duvet and take my own blanket with me 🤣.

I clearly have watched too many episodes of the Hotel Inspector or Hotel Hell when they used to inspect the mattresses in hotels 🤢.

Johnisafckface · 01/11/2023 22:25

I feel this way too this I haven’t been on vacation for years.

Tilllly · 01/11/2023 22:26

Doesn't bother me at all
I love it

Could you spray Zoflora everywhere to de-ick?

SleepyMathematician · 01/11/2023 22:26

We solved this by buying our own caravan and now we have somewhere that’s ours and feels like an extension of home.
This won’t make you feel any better but when we went away in the caravan recently my daughter and her partner came but stayed in a hotel and found bedbugs. They checked before unpacking anything and were immediately moved to a different room which appeared fine but they hot washed every scrap of clothing from their luggage when they got home.
I know I’m probably being irrational but I don’t like hotels either. They are always dirty if you look too closely.

I bet that stinks

MidnightOnceMore · 01/11/2023 22:28

I get it. I used to have a camper van which solved this issue.

Hbh17 · 01/11/2023 22:29

I love staying away, especially in hotels. My ambition is to die in Claridges - just fabulous!

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 01/11/2023 22:32

You are not alone!!

funbags3 · 01/11/2023 22:33

I've been feeling a lot worse since hitting middle age. It's almost as if i can feel the dirt, even when there's nothing there.

juicelooseabootthishoose · 01/11/2023 22:35

Currently away and suffering. Keep socks on so feet do not come into contact with carpets etc.

I even go off food after a few days.

And i am no mrs hinch myself!

lolaVie · 01/11/2023 22:38

Oh I am actually relieved it isn’t just me! I wish I could enjoy it and relax but I can feel my shoulders and neck tensing more and more as the week goes on. @juicelooseabootthishoose Yes socks!! All the time. And I’m also no Mrs Hinch!

How bizarre. Are you afraid of germs generally?

All2Well · 01/11/2023 22:40

Same but I'm neurodiverse and have some OCD traits.

YourWinter · 01/11/2023 22:40

I absolutely hate sleeping away from home. I can’t always avoid hospital but I can choose not to use hotels. Changing the bedding between customers doesn’t cut it - the pillows, duvets, blankets and mattresses aren’t replaced for each changeover. Repulsive.

Greatbigfluffytrousers · 01/11/2023 22:48

No but I come from a farming family and have literally had my head shit on by a dairy cow twice.

Lyracappul · 01/11/2023 23:02

You’re forgetting how amazing your skin is at keeping out bacteria, that you have acid in your stomach to keep out bugs and your white cells are amazing..

Acorn55 · 01/11/2023 23:16

Yep, can’t stand it. Detox wipe every hard surface starting with the door handles on the way in. TV remote, everything.

BertieBotts · 01/11/2023 23:20

No, I have never experienced this, except if the place was really dirty. It sounds almost like contamination OCD.

Sebsaloysius · 01/11/2023 23:29

I could've written your post myself - almost word for word.

And I thought it was just me....although I think there's something wrong with me because you can bet your world that most hotel rooms are 100% cleaner than my own home 😂

RampantIvy · 01/11/2023 23:35

No. This is a really unhealthy attitude. Do you have OCD?
I have only once felt like this, and it was in a very seedy hotel in North London.

Greatbigfluffytrousers · 01/11/2023 23:42

Is there evidence that staying in hotels makes people ill? That if all bedding isn’t washed between occupant then this will spread germs in a problematic way? I used to suffer from OCD in my teens and early 20s so I’m uncomfortable at the idea that people are avoiding situations because they are stressed about things that aren’t actually true.

theduchessofspork · 01/11/2023 23:58

Never even thought about it but I travel a lot.

Do you not go away much ie is it just an unfamiliarity thing?? Otherwise it sounds like mild OCD or anxiety. These things tend to get worse so I would try to keep a lid on it, or it will shrink your life.

You know this is not normal, right?
