Food which makes your heart sink

Do you have a meal/food which when suggested just makes your heart sink?

For me it is boiled bacon. It just sounds so dreary. Whenever DH suggests it for dinner I am instantly thrown back to childhood and salty boiled bacon cooked in brine served up with boiled to death sliced carrots and fallen boiled potatoes.

DH actually cooks it really well, he rinses the joint thoroughly and cooks it with apples and sometimes cider as well. He serves it with crushed roast potatoes and peas or beans.

But the words 'boiled bacon' take me back to childhood and the dreary, salty meal.

Does anyone else have similar instant responses to certain foods?

I know this is a first world problem and I am lucky to have choices and a DH who cooks most meals.

Boiled bacon??? 🤮

Ham steak, gammon, "open burger" (aka a meat patty sitting on a slice of bread), tapioca dessert. Disgusting stuff that goes straight in the bin when they foist it on us. Anything spicy, I can't eat it.

Risotto, similar to you that I love it now but it brings back my childhood terror of the stuff.
Also ‘with a side of roasted Mediterranean vegetables’ always seems to be mushrooms, aubergine and courgette. Which are the only vegetables I actively dislike

Sunday roast. It’s the way it dominates the day, the smell of the house, takes me back to being unhappily married. Don’t mind one in a pub. In, eat, out. Just not the fucking ‘occasion’.

Traditional Sunday lunch or Christmas dinner, or any traditional meat & two veg or carvery really. Just the thought turns my stomach these days.

I'm not vegetarian, but lumps/slices of meat just turn me off.

Thatsshallot1967 · 31/10/2023 07:54

As a vegetarian:

Jackfruit as a burger option. Just give me a veggie burger with vegetables in.

Risotto - grim especially if offered as a Christmas veggie option when everyone else is getting roasties, veg etc. it's not difficult to cook a protein meal eg nut roast or a Wellington of some sort.

Pumpkin - yuk

Butternut squash - ok if it hasn't been cooked to death.

Fennel ... there are no words

A “homemade curry” said by people who don’t know how to make good curry!

don’t know why but it’s so much more disappointing than a “homemade pasta dish” for instance if it’s done badly

RiverRed · 31/10/2023 07:56

Pizza — topping ok but no appetite for either the crust or base.

Oh yes! Always watery, bland and overwhelmingly tasting of tinned tomatoes

Funderthighs · 31/10/2023 07:57

Liver and onions 😱

andyourpointiswhat · 31/10/2023 07:58

How funny, when I read your thread title I immediately thought boiled bacon, served in my house with over cooked cabbage. Not eating your dinner just wasn’t an option so I would wash down each mouthful with orange squash. Even now the thought of it makes me heave and dear god the smell!

Kidneys. Always taste of urine to me, however they've been prepared.

MajorBarbara · 31/10/2023 07:59

Anything with chicken. 'Fuckin' chicken' we call it, said in a heavy mock-Scouse accent.

Westfacing · 31/10/2023 07:59

Just ask him to refer to it as slow-cooked gammon!

countrygirl99 · 31/10/2023 08:00

Vol au vents - takes me back to 1970s family parties when they were filled with a bland tinned chicken in white sauce and considered very sophisticated.

MidnightOnceMore · 31/10/2023 08:00

He could change the name to poached gammon so it feels like a new dish! A modern classic, entirely different from boiled bacon.

And the smell when they cook. Revolting. I’ll eat just about any other part of an animal except kidney.

Anything with lentils/beans in it, they turn my stomach.
I once had to eat lentils in order to be polite. I was actually sick an hour later so wonder if I’m slightly allergic to them.

RampantIvy · 31/10/2023 08:03

Too much stodge - pizza served with chips, lasagne served with chips, chip butties.

I'm not a competitive undereater and could do with losing half a stone, but I like a bit of greenery with my food.

I also like lasgane and would rather have a proper sized portion that doesn't need padding out with chips. The same goes for pizza.

Also, over filled plates of food. I do have quite a hearty appetite, but some of the Yorkshire sized portions we get round here means that we don't eat out very often.

It's not boiled bacon as in boiled slices...it's a bacon joint that's been poached in stock until tender and falling apart. Served with creamy mash, peas and parsley sauce in my Nan's house...delicious!

SallyWD · 31/10/2023 08:06

I've never eaten boiled bacon or been offered boiled bacon in my life! Why does your husband think this is an acceptable dinner suggestion when there's so many other delicious options available?
I think British party type spreads makes my heart sink - you know the very beige, carb heavy type spreads of sandwiches sausage rolls, quiche, vol-au-vonts, pizza, crisps. These things are all fine when served separately but when served together (usually cold) it's just like this mass of very dry, beige food.

That does sound more appealing!

(No idea if it's a thing in Australia, I've never encountered it.)

RampantIvy · 31/10/2023 08:06

We used to get boiled bacon and pease pudding for lunch at primary school. I hated it.

willowstar · 31/10/2023 08:08

Mushroom or butternut squash risotto. I am a vegetarian and for years this was, and still is, a very common dish in restaurants as the only vegetarian option.

ElevenSeven · 31/10/2023 08:11

Cottage pie, Sunday roast, pork chops

princefamilypaper · 31/10/2023 08:13

Fish pie
