Will this look silly. New kitchen related

We are getting a new kitchen from Homebase, we have our plan done and we are happy with the location of things but we have realised that the units will finish just short (25cm) short of the door frame on the kitchen. My question is, will this look stupid ? Is the kitchen supposed to end right up to the door frame if there is a door frame there? I understand that if the units where only coming half way it wouldn't look as bad but is 25cm to small of a gap and will look silly?

I would be tempted to add a 150mm wine rack and then a 10 cm blanking plate.

Themostimportantpart · 30/10/2023 09:27

I would try to squeeze something else in.

I'd add a wine rack/baking tray rack or whatever to fill the gap, I think it'll look a bit silly just being a gap without an insert. I have a little step stool & it might be the ideal spot for that, but I'd still
put a little insert in there

ErrolTheDragon · 30/10/2023 09:30

Depends on the layout and how the door opens. Units right up to the door frame sometimes result in a corner you're liable to walk into.

spitefulandbadgrammar · 30/10/2023 09:31

Gives you room to come in the door and not bang your hip! Do you need somewhere for tea towels/random shite? Add hooks or a bar to the side of the units to make it intentional. Or that’s where you put your cat bowl.

lndnbrdge91 · 30/10/2023 09:32

Have you thought about where a bin will go? Could extend the worktop
To the wall and this be a space for your bin. I only say as many people forget about this (I did)!

EllaMenopee · 30/10/2023 09:35

My mum brought the kitchen units all the way to the door frame and because of the odd layout of the room, couldn't actually open the kitchen door properly so had to remove it altogether 🙄

Give0fecks · 30/10/2023 09:39

Could use the space for bin, broom, or anything else that needs storage

Usernamesarenoteasy · 30/10/2023 09:41

Could you add the plan of the kitchen here? Then we can advise better.
You might be better off having that space.

MidnightOnceMore · 30/10/2023 09:41

Space is good. You can add something freestanding later, it's a space for a bin, or a fold up stool, or some artwork.

Don't add for the sake of it.

therealcookiemonster · 30/10/2023 10:16

actually think you need a bigger gap. to allow movement in and out of the room

theduchessofspork · 30/10/2023 10:18

Yes probably - but just add a wine rack or some open pull out shelves. There are loads of things designed to fill gaps like that. Or you can get a carpenter to do it for you.

theduchessofspork · 30/10/2023 10:19

.. assuming you don’t need it to open the door! But I do agree you don’t need to do it right away - wait and see what will be useful

flexigirl · 30/10/2023 10:22

Will the door still open ok ? Ares are a wee bit short but we've put a load of wee hooks for our keys and it's functional and looks fine

Ylvamoon · 30/10/2023 10:33

This os ours, no issue with looks & space. If anything the bit of space helps with opening/ closing the door especially if you carry something!

I should add that it will be a double oven stack that will end here so no work top etc. I like the wine fridge/ rack idea. I'll have another look at options I just think like you lot say, it'll look like the kitchen is too small for the space or something lol

Even a blanking cupboard would do to fill out the gap.

🙈 oh no. We wouldn't have that prob as it leads to the utility door which opens the opposite way.

Thanks so much, I always forget a key component to important projects, but thanks fully the bin made it to the planning phase on this occasion lol

If it's against a wall you could just add a worktop - I had a 40cm ish gap I needed left for the cat flap and I just had a worktop added - it's just fixed with brackets against wall as it goes up against the larder.

I used the wall above the worktop to fix my Dyson so it's out of the way.

Saschka · 30/10/2023 10:46

Won’t look silly, but we have a 150mm pull out and it is great for oils, vinegars, soy sauce etc - easy to get to, no trying to reach back over everything else in the cupboard to get to the bottles. We use a lot of condiments in cooking though.

kitchenhelprequired · 30/10/2023 10:50

When I planned a kitchen recently I seem to remember it being recommended the units didn't come right up to the doorway. Wasn't possible in our case but I definitely read that.

ReviewingTheSituation · 30/10/2023 10:53

My parents have this (tall oven unit almost up to the door), and they added a set of hooks on the side for tea towels, oven gloves etc. Tea towels are so often overlooked in kitchen design - people spend £££ on a swanky new kitchen and then find they've got nowhere to put them. If you haven't already decided where they'll go, I'd add them here.

SM4713 · 30/10/2023 10:56

Could you move the cupboard along, so the gap falls closer to a sink/oven etc and install something like these? A tea towel rack (a slimline one though) or a mini- pull out storage rack.

An oven next to a doorway seems a bit of a hazard.
