To support the work that the Royal British Legion do.

Nobody around here seems to be wearing one.

Of course. I don't understand a white one, do people think we should've just accepted the Nazis? And betrayed our alliances? Or is it to say we should have no military action ever again, no matter if our allies are invaded or new genocidal maniacs rock up and start gassing people? How about if we're invaded, can we defend ourselves? Sorry for all the questions, I've not heard of a white poppy before.

White poppies have been going for 90 years, so not a new thing

I'll be wearing a purple one.

theduchessofspork · 29/10/2023 20:53

I do, because I think we treat ex servicemen badly and need to do much better.

I usually work my way through 3 or 4 from 1st Nov 😁

I'll be wearing a purple one.

I was at the arboretum yesterday and there was a purple one on the horse memorial, genuinely tear jerking.

Nope , not after I heard Jim Davison on the radio a few years ago saying how hard it was to get any money out of the RBL to help ex service men/women .
They have millions in the bank and in investments

Poblano · 29/10/2023 20:55

I wear a white poppy. They commemorate all victims of war, not just the armed forces.

My grandfather was a PoW in Japan. The lack of support from the government and charities after WW2 for men who clearly had PTSD was a disgrace. He sent his medals back.

catzrulz · 29/10/2023 20:55

Definitely will, as a navy mum for the last few years.
I'm going to wear a purple poppy for the animals this year.

UnderwaterSpaceCadet · 29/10/2023 20:55

@Poblano Yes, that’s the forgotten bit of WW2, isn’t it? Always has been.

Icefoot · 29/10/2023 20:36

I always wear one but this year, I've changed my job and now work in a very multicultural area, where emotions are running high currently . I'm now not entirely sure what the "right" thing to do is. I understand what the Poppy represents, but not everyone does and I don't want to inflame anyone. Hopefully that's an unfounded concern, but I'm not so sure.

I do wear one generally, but I work in one region where it would be divisive, so I don’t wear it there.

I wear it because I think we should treat ex servicemen much better than we do, but there’s no point pretending it doesn’t bring up strong feelings about Britain’s past and recent history in some people.

AgaMM · 29/10/2023 20:05

No. Its meaning has changed from honouring the lives of those lost in the world wars to blindly supporting the British military even when they are the aggressor. It has also been hijacked by the far right unfortunately which is another reason that puts people off.

would you mind telling me how? What you say about the far right? I don’t know anything about that

JayAlfredPrufrock · 29/10/2023 20:57

Yes I will.

And a purple one for the animals.

berry798 · 29/10/2023 20:58

I find the white poppy offensive. Pacifism is an extreme view that would lead to more bloodshed than going to war. No sane person is actually a pacifist. They might think they are, until their or their families lives are threatened by evil, violent, senseless forces.

I’m sure SSAFA do, as do many other charities. It’s not really my brief to name check every charity is it, particularly as it’s the RBL who do poppies which is what this thread is about. Feel free to post about other charities though. Feel even more free to target areas where service people aren’t being looked after and offer your advice.

I mentioned it because I read your post as criticising RBL and H4H for not doing something that is actually the work of a different charity. My apologies if I misunderstood.

A lot of the activities of the military charities are, as you will know, co-ordinated through COBSEO to minimise overlap. RBL do a hell of a lot of good work, but that doesn't mean they are the go-to for everything. However during the Poppy campaign, RBL are front and central

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 29/10/2023 20:20

Trying to dodge plastic, so no.

@TheLightSideOfTheMoon They've produced non plastic ones this year - they're made entirely of paper.

bonkersAlice · 29/10/2023 20:58

Of course I will.

Figgygal · 29/10/2023 20:59

I might i usually pop money in the collection tin and the kids school usually sells merch which i give them money for but wearing the actual poppy is not actually something I Rush to do.

Now that the ww2 generation are passing into history I wonder where the campaign will go tbh its been heavily reliant on the imagery of the brave old soldier, dambusters etc I guess the British involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan is more problematic yet its those veterans that need support these days

Thank you, that is good information. We don't support our current and ex-servicemen enough.

Yep I absolutely will be wearing it with pride. I'm proud to be from a forces family. My Grandad, dad, FIL, Bil's my nephew & now my son. The British Legion do great things to support service personnel & Families.

Wanderinghome · 29/10/2023 21:01

I'll definitely be wearing one this year.

Kate9423 · 29/10/2023 21:01

Yes absolutely

I've got one on my coat already as I've been selling poppies door to door this weekend. Must admit it's the earliest I've ever worn one. I usually only wear one a few days before Remembrance Sunday.
