To support the work that the Royal British Legion do.

Nobody around here seems to be wearing one.

I have a pinbadge I bought last year that I will put on my work lanyard on 1st November, ist too early yet.

I buy the pin badges rather than the paper poppies because I never seem to be able to keep them attached to my coat, so it just gets lost.

RudsyFarmer · 29/10/2023 20:21

So many people hate this country so it doesn’t surprise me that they have no interest in commemorating those who died for it. I shudder when I think of those young men and if they could see things now. Poor bastards.

ButWhatIsIt · 29/10/2023 20:21

Yes, I'm already wearing it.

43ontherocksporfavor · 29/10/2023 20:18

@Girlattheback new ones contain no plastic.

I haven’t seen those. That’s good to know and I would definitely wear a non plastic poppy.

macshoto · 29/10/2023 20:21

Yes.
But one of the small brass ones made from artillery shells that the RBL sold a few years ago. (Plus will make a small donation to recognise that I haven't bought one of the plastic and paper ones.)

The official poppy wearing period is from the last Friday in October to November 11th. I'm already wearing mine.

Gold star. Do you think your one pound donation each year actually makes a difference? What else do you do to support service people and veterans?

They won’t see anything though will they? What is the actual contribution you make to change the life of service people and veterans?

thingsthatmakeyougohmmmmmmmm · 29/10/2023 20:22

Dad was called up just as the war ended and was embarrassed that people made such a fuss of him going when he felt he hadn't done anything. Then he did his national service in Palestine. (but let's not go there)

@Worriedmum159 you seem angry. What’s up?

There are plenty of other ways to honour them .

Brexile · 29/10/2023 20:23

No. I won't be hanging any St George's flags out of the windows either. I used to like the idea of poppies years ago, but it's turned into something else now.

Yes

ButterMyParsnip · 29/10/2023 20:24

If they were in support of those who fought in WW2 I would but they aren't, they support anyone who blindly followed the government into recent wars for a salary.

DisforDarkChocolate · 29/10/2023 20:24

It's too early for me. I buy one but in the week leading up to Remembrance Sunday.

Vettrianofan · 29/10/2023 20:25

FlorenceBoot · 29/10/2023 20:08

No. Nor will I be going out iof my way to observe the two minutes silence. The World Wars were a long time ago.

That's an interesting opinion, which I have never seen before but it seems fair enough. I don't tend to wear poppies and don't observe silences like this. I might quietly reflect but that's it.

All this obsession with people having to outwardly broadcast their views on everything is just exhausting.

You can commemorate without wearing a piece of plastic/paper on your coat.

43ontherocksporfavor · 29/10/2023 20:25

I have seen no correlation between far right and poppies. I don’t see any far right material. If that is true , then even more reason not to let them taint the message .

TicTacNicNak · 29/10/2023 20:25

Yes I will. I wear the same knitted poppy every year, but put a donation in a collection box.

I'm older and wear my poppy to remember those who bravely gave their lives so that we could have our freedoms today. I don't listen to any of the far right or "virtue signaling" nonsense.

43ontherocksporfavor · 29/10/2023 20:26

@XenoBitch of course and people can wear poppies if they wish to.

Orangewall · 29/10/2023 20:27

@IsadoraQuagmire wow. Your respect for others opinions just leaps off the screen.

RidingMyBike · 29/10/2023 20:27

I haven't since a friend had a really miserable time working for RBL and I decided I no longer wanted to give them my money.
