To support the work that the Royal British Legion do.

Nobody around here seems to be wearing one.

I do think a factor is that British people are perpetually told to loathe their country and everything it stands for, so that any type of "acceptable" patriotism, like commemorating our forebears who died so that we could live, is seized upon all the more. It really upsets me that anyone in the UK could find the poppy symbol offensive.

Indeed. Maybe this is also explains the several assertions on this thread that Poppy wearing has been claimed by The Far Right? With the above in mind, the political spectrum does seem to have shifted doesn’t it? With prior centrist or centre right beliefs now routinely being declared “Far Right!”

No, it’s not about centred beliefs, a lot of the narrative HAS switched further right. And the flag shaggers are the problem.

l went to look at a house for sale. The next door neighbour had 2 union jacks in his garden. I didn’t bother looking at the house.

Its that sort of person that’s pushing the narrative further and further to the right,

What becomes of the money?

Info here

Who We Are | Armed Forces Charity | Royal British Legion

There's simply loads of stuff they do that people don't generally know about - they're one of the biggest providers of mobility scooters and personal alarms in the country, they run care homes, they can help with social housing, they cross-fund to CAB so veterans can get advice swiftly, they have newer initiatives like Battle Back (rehab inc through sport - centre established 2011) and Civvy Street (helping to find employment for those leaving the Forces), they commission research into veteran community needs and campaign to get it provided (by Government or military charities, co-ordinated through COBSEO), there's even provision of subsidised holidays including ones with facilities t support a range of disabilities and needs.

Good to know. Thank you.
When I was young I remember seeing ww2 vets with limbs missing and our school had talks from members of the guinea pig club.
That was a memory , but I live near Headley Court now.

Yes. My family served in WW1 & WW2 so I wear it to honour them. I helped my Mother collect each year as a child. My kids have attended ACF for years so have led Remembrance Sunday readings. We attended the Legion Annual memorial concert at the RAH last year & it was very moving (my kids also learned a lot about the Falklands conflict & we had, I hope, a balanced conversation afterwards). I also wear a white & purple poppy.

Our little church graveyard has the graves of three young men who died in the war all of whom were brothers.

Imagine loosing three sons.

I think the least we can do is wear a poppy in remembrance of those who gave their lives.

They shouldn’t just tell us, but actually present proof of it happening. Proof not from a FB page or similar.

It would be around 2009 ish, at the height of the Afghanistan campaign. It was well documented in the media, they also had a plan to parade effigies of blood soaked British soldiers through the town of Wooton Basset.
Shall we play a game of "guess the religious goup"?

You don’t need to wear a poppy for a couple of weeks a year to remember their deaths

Flowers4me · 30/10/2023 08:57

I will be wearing a poppy to remember my relatives who served in WW1 and WW2 and who suffered greatly as a result. Some died, others were disabled for life and that had a terrible impact on their wives, children and grandchildren. War trauma is terrible; it lasts for generations but I'm hopeful that my own children are less affected by it now. I don't judge those who decide not to wear one but I am offended by those who make it political and state that a poppy reflects the far right. I'm not far right, never will be, but I do want to show my respect and pride for the men in my family who gave up so much for me.

Aethelberht · 30/10/2023 08:57

I've got one. I'm very thankful to be alive. I'm not sure about the first world war, but I know for certain that if we had lost the second, I would never have been born.

JustKen · 30/10/2023 09:01

I don't wear one anymore because I can't relate to the RBL anymore. The remembrance services are heavily Christian in nature (I'm an ardent atheist) and the RBL rarely talk about the female service personnel who died in the world wars and in the 80+ years since. I do feel like the nationalists have comandeered the Poppy somewhat which is disgusting in my view.

I send a tenner to them every year, along with H4H and Combat Stress but that's it.

It's a commemoration. Most people like to do something symbolic to commemorate something rather than just have the thought in their heads. If you don't object to remembrance, there shouldn't be any objection to commemoration.

43ontherocksporfavor · 30/10/2023 09:06

Of course you don’t need to wear a poppy to remember the sacrifices so many made but in a busy world, it serves as a reminder to just stop and reflect.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 30/10/2023 09:09

I will donate and wear a poppy bracelet I bought a few years ago.

No objection to anyone who wants to wear a poppy

I object to people insisting that others should wear one.

fyn · 30/10/2023 09:13

@WorriedMutha they do lots of things. There is a RBL care home in our town that does massive amounts for the veterans that live there and others in our community. Anybody who has ever served is a veteran so there are obviously still lots of veterans alive.

Makethemostofit · 30/10/2023 09:17

It doesn't mean that you have to get pilloried (which is what has happened previously) just because your poppy's fallen off.

I have never witnessed this ever.

Where does this happen and who to?

I’ve always been aware of the ongoing “Does it glorify war or is it important to remember the sacrifice of war and be reminded to avoid it if possible?” debate around the poppy, but this new social media-spawned thing of people wanting to publicly humiliate and destroy others for the mildest disagreements ie- ‘pillory’ them is very new. I find it difficult to believe that people act around the poppy the way that frothing keyboard warriors act around their one million and one ‘days of remembrance”. It’s not culturally consistent and sounds made up to me.

43ontherocksporfavor · 30/10/2023 09:23

Who insists others wear a poppy? It’s a personal choice.
The only place I see over ‘poppying’ is on TV presenters. That never used to happen.

ismu · 30/10/2023 09:25

There's a post earlier from @JaneyGee saying she's happy when "woke" people get upset.

It would be great if we could learn what " Lest we forget " actually means.
I won't wear a poppy because it's become a very right wing signifier here linked with the union flag and racism and sectarianism. War monuments are polished up while actual veterans rely on foodbanks.
In Scotland the Erskine / Lady Haig charities do employ some veterans and provide support and care, so it's not just the RBL.
They do good work and I will donate if asked but won't wear a poppy. Maybe time we supported veterans properly as a society rather than relying on charity and parading around jingoistically for two weeks in November.

Clearly you don't belong to my town's Facebook page. I'm tempted to mute it for a fortnight. Last year and the year before it was full of people judging others for not wearing a poppy. It was those people who confirmed my decision not to ever wear one again.

43ontherocksporfavor · 30/10/2023 09:27

I don’t do Facebook. Problem solved.

I thought that purple poppies had been discontinued - where has everyone been getting them from in the last couple of years?

Or do they mean the badge version, which I think is still around? And if so two questions a) which charity sells them and b) is there a version you can put on a dog's collar?

The war horse memorial charity sell purple poppies:

I'm an unapologetic Guardian reading leftist and will be wearing a poppy, but it won't bother me if other people prefer not to.
