To support the work that the Royal British Legion do.

Nobody around here seems to be wearing one.

@Housemove18 which religious group is that then? go on, tell us...

They shouldn’t just tell us, but actually present proof of it happening. Proof not from a FB page or similar.

>WW1 really had nothing to do with fighting for our freedoms.
...
>For the record, I have a history degree

That makes two of us. Then you'll know, that the 'Death Penny' given to Great War next of kin (example from a quick search online) says 'He Died For Freedom And Honour'.

So although we history degree holders over a hundred years later might think things were more complex and nuanced than some at the time believed as they went off to die, or sent others off to die, that fighting for freedom thing was certainly in the consciousness of many.

That was the lie sold to the soldiers, yes.

I reported your offensive comment and I note it has been deleted so i won't repeat it as it was horribly triggering (I lost a school friend that way)

I am totally in the dark??? I made no reference whatsoever to suicide?

I think, given Mumsnet deleted your post, and given I have highlighted how distressing it was, you should probably drop the wide eyed innocent thing

Just when I think I've read the stupidest thing on the internet I read this. My nan will be interested to learn that the second world war, which she lived through, is an event of the dim and distant past and unworthy of remembrance. Amazing how her family and friends remember her birthday!

Don't be rude. My late parents lived through WW2 and never wore poppies.

Canthave2manycats · 29/10/2023 23:11

Well both you and MN are nuts, because the posts referenced made no reference whatsoever to suicide.

Maybe you could explain, because I am completely baffled???

I always make a donation but I wear the red poppy brooch DH's grandma crocheted for me. She makes them every year and her church sells them for RBL.

user1497207191 · 29/10/2023 23:12

Yes, wore one at football yesterday, it was the last home game before remembrance day so they had the pre match ceremony with bugle and two minutes silence. Lots of fans bought poppies and everyone respected the 2 mins silence.

So now you're calling me mentally ill? Nice.

OvertiredandConfused · 29/10/2023 23:14

I’ll be wearing one. A few years ago I visited some of the First World War battlefields and earlier this summer I was in France. We visited British, American and German war cemeteries. Row after row of young men, many still teenagers. I also know people who have served much more recently. I want to make sure we never forget in the hope we never repeat.

Ok. If you say so. I mean I have a copy of your post but i won't be repeating it on here as it was offensive (hence why it was deleted)

Makethemostofit · 29/10/2023 23:16

I am surprised how cold and callous people have become.

Wearing a poppy has always felt like a sombre thing to me. The symbolism of the poppies growing in the fields churned up by explosions after the war. What’s all this nonsense about virtue-signalling and judging?

It’s looking at the past through the modern lens. These people who can only perceive wearing the poppy as virtue-signalling might be surprised that the soldiers in the trenches in WWI didn’t use Twitter and take pouty selfies with their smartphones between assaults.

AuntMarysPinny · 29/10/2023 23:19

@FlorenceBoot I've been no ruder than you when consigning your parents and my nan to the dustbin of history

AGovernmentOfLawsAndNotMen · 29/10/2023 23:21

@Canthave2manycats
going to stick my head above the sand here.

I read all the posts from you and others going back and forth and whilst they were, let’s say, argumentative I didn’t read anything that directly or indirectly referred to suicide from anyone, including yourself.
Sometimes MN just take stuff down automatically if it’s reported. I once had a post taken down when I Asked MNs to be kind to each other?!

If anyone disagrees with this comment I will not be drawn in.

There specifically was. And I have a screenshot of it. But it was swiftly deleted.

Passepartoute · 29/10/2023 23:23

I dislike the obsession with wearing poppies at this time of year, as if somehow by failing to wear a bit of paper we are showing disrespect to the war dead. It becomes really slightly absurd the way everyone on TV ostentatiously wears one because they're all terrified of the flak if they don't, and people get bullied into wearing them even in circumstances where it's blatantly impractical, like on the football field or on skimpy costumes on Strictly. It's got so that no-one cares if you've donated nothing, so long as you're wearing a poppy, even if it's something you crocheted or bought 5 years ago. Surely it's the donation that counts, not the symbol?

The symbol of the poppy can be everlasting and a constant reminder of the sacrifices various people have made for humanity.

Thank you so much - I know I didn't reference suicide!

I'm going to leave this thread, because it's absolutely crazy.

I am just really annoyed to have a post deleted when I had no ill intent.

I really, really appreciate your post though! x

soundsys · 29/10/2023 23:26

Do you know, I'm not this year. For the first time ever. Might get a white one. It just feels... I don't know, I get why it's important actually but then I just don't have the mental energy to be having. discussions about it all the time (which I would due to where I work I think)

You did. And I read it. And it was horribly unpleasant and triggering. And it was deleted.

saraclara · 29/10/2023 23:27

I am surprised how cold and callous people have become.

I think it's the opposite. There's a cloying sentimentality around the poppy these days, that didn't used to be there.

I am neither cold nor callous, and I have immense pride in my relatives, some who I never got to meet, who endured the world wars. But I no longer want to be part of what is in danger of becoming right wing associated poppy 'porn'.

My own late Grandfather who endured a special kind of hell, refused to wear a poppy. So I'm certainly not prepared to be insuted by people here who disagree with me choosing not to.

Funnily enough, no. I wouldn't want to cause the same triggering memories in anyone else that you caused in me
